The chiral coordinate Bethe ansatz (CCBA) constructs the phantom Bethe eigenstates of the open spin-1/2 XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary fields as superpositions of chiral shock states (spin-helix states with kinks), with factorized expansion coefficients and Bethe ansatz equations that reproduce those obtained by algebraic approaches. As proposed in 2021, the construction is verified explicitly for magnon numbers and only part of the coefficients is proved for arbitrary , so its general- hypotheses remain conjectural, and four issues were left open: a complete rigorous proof of the ansatz for arbitrary ; the possibility of further invariant-subspace partitionings on special parameter manifolds; the extension of the ansatz to other integrable open systems, most challengingly the open XYZ chain with general non-diagonal boundary terms; and the construction of dual eigenstates for non-Hermitian systems under the phantom roots criterion. Subsequent literature shows that the Hilbert-space splitting criterion for the open XYZ chain and its lowest sectors have since been proven, and the Bethe-root structure at degenerate boundaries of the XXZ chain has been classified, but the rigorous arbitrary- proof, the structure of further subspace partitionings, the general open-XYZ chiral Bethe ansatz, and the generic non-Hermitian dual-state construction all remain open.
Background
The open spin-1/2 XXZ chain is a finite segment of the anisotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chain, with Hamiltonian acting on , where are Pauli matrices, is the anisotropy, and are magnetic fields applied at the two ends. When these boundary fields are non-diagonal (they have components transverse to the axis), they break the conservation of the total -magnetization, that is, the symmetry, and the exact solution of the model becomes notoriously difficult: the standard coordinate Bethe ansatz, which diagonalizes a chain by superposing plane waves with scattering amplitudes, relies on magnetization sectors that no longer exist. A breakthrough came through the study of phantom Bethe roots: special solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations (BAE, the algebraic conditions whose solutions parametrize eigenvalues and eigenstates) in which some roots are sent to infinity. Such phantom roots carry zero energy. Zhang, Klümper and Popkov showed (Phys. Rev. B 103, 115435 (2021)) that under a phantom roots criterion (PRC) — a linear constraint tying the anisotropy to the length and the boundary parameters, in the parameterization of the boundary fields, with integer and — the Hilbert space splits into two invariant subspaces and of dimensions and . These subspaces are spanned by chiral shock states: site-factorized product states whose local magnetization rotates progressively from site to site (spin-helix states), separated by domain walls called kinks, with the maximal number of kinks; each subspace is described by its own homogeneous set of BAE.
On this basis the source paper (Phys. Rev. B 104, 195409 (2021)) proposed the chiral coordinate Bethe ansatz (CCBA): every phantom Bethe eigenstate of (and, dually, of ) is a superposition of chiral shock states whose expansion coefficients factorize into a simple boundary-dependent prefactor (a product of boundary functions counting how many kink positions coincide with the chain ends) times a sum of plane waves over permutations and chiralities of the quasi-momenta , with amplitudes generated by a two-body scattering matrix and boundary reflection matrices, and with the compatibility conditions reproducing the BAE previously derived by algebraic Bethe ansatz and transfer-matrix methods (approaches that encode the spectrum in a commuting family of transfer matrices built from local Boltzmann weights). The construction was carried out explicitly for , and part of the coefficients was proved for arbitrary ; the full statement for arbitrary remained a hypothesis. The paper then posed four unresolved issues: (i) a complete rigorous proof of the general CCBA hypotheses for arbitrary ; (ii) the possibility of further partitionings of into internal invariant subspaces on special parameter manifolds — already at , the manifold (where are boundary parameters) splits into three internal invariant subspaces of dimensions , each with its own reduced BAE; (iii) the generalization of the CCBA to other integrable open systems, in particular the XYZ spin-1/2 chain (the fully anisotropic cousin of the XXZ chain, with three unequal couplings, whose exact solution is expressed through elliptic functions) with general non-diagonal boundary terms, identified as a challenging open problem; and (iv) the construction of dual (left) eigenstates when the Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian — relevant for stochastic generators such as the Markov matrix of the open asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), a paradigmatic one-dimensional stochastic model of driven particle transport whose exact steady state is related to the XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundaries.
Problem Statement
Advance the chiral coordinate Bethe ansatz for phantom eigenstates of integrable open spin chains, as posed by the source paper, which left the following questions open.
The four sub-questions (1)–(4) below are the mandatory components of this task and are judged independently: a complete resolution addresses all four, while a partial resolution is assessed on the sub-questions it settles.
(1) Rigorous general- proof for the open XXZ chain. Prove, or refute, the CCBA hypotheses for arbitrary magnon number and generic boundary parameters satisfying the phantom roots criterion: that every eigenstate in the invariant subspace (resp. ) has the conjectured coefficient structure — the factorized boundary prefactor times a sum of plane waves whose amplitudes are generated by the two-body scattering matrix and the boundary reflection matrices — and that the physical solution sets of the two associated homogeneous sets of Bethe ansatz equations span the respective invariant subspaces.
(2) Further partitionings of the invariant subspaces. The source paper showed that on the manifold the subspace admits three internal invariant subspaces of dimensions , each with its own reduced Bethe ansatz equations, and that various internal invariant subspaces can appear under other constraints. Determine which further partitionings of into internal invariant subspaces occur on special parameter manifolds of the boundary fields (such as and its degeneracies), and derive for each such block its dimension and its reduced Bethe ansatz equations, going beyond the examples worked out in the source paper and the degenerate-boundary Bethe-root classification of the follow-up literature.
(3) Chiral Bethe ansatz for the open XYZ chain. Determine whether the CCBA generalizes to the open spin-1/2 XYZ chain with general non-diagonal boundary terms and, if so, construct the chiral (elliptic) shock basis and the eigenstates of the invariant subspaces for arbitrary kink number , with the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations. (The Hilbert-space splitting criterion and the zero- and one-Bethe-root sectors for this model were proven after the source paper appeared; the general construction for arbitrary remains open.)
(4) Dual states for non-Hermitian systems. For non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (and the associated Markov generators) satisfying the phantom roots criterion, construct the dual eigenstates — the left eigenstates paired with the right eigenstates produced by the chiral ansatz — as a biorthogonal system (left and right bases and satisfying ), beyond the constrained special cases (such as the open ASEP steady state under a specific constraint) treated so far, or else establish that no such biorthogonal system exists under the stated conditions.
