Appel and Vlaar (Indag. Math. 2025) constructed a universal framework for boundary transfer matrices of quantum integrable systems with reflecting (open) boundary conditions, built from quantum symmetric pairs (QSPs) and their universal K-matrices, and posed as an overarching open problem the boundary analogue of the Frenkel-Hernandez spectral theory: a universal description of spectra through Baxter-type functional relations, as relations in a suitable Grothendieck ring, replacing the case-by-case Bethe-ansatz treatment of open chains. Partial progress exists only in special cases: Baseilhac, Gainutdinov and Lemarthe (Nucl. Phys. B 2026) derived universal TT- and TQ-relations for the alternating central extension of the q-Onsager algebra, but conditionally on an unproven conjectural identification of fused K-operators with a universal K-matrix, without constructing universal Q-operators; boundary q-characters were constructed by Li and Przezdziecki only for split and quasi-split types. The general problem remains open: universal boundary fusion (TT) relations, TQ/T-system/Y-system relations, and their representation-theoretic (Grothendieck-ring) interpretation for boundary transfer matrices arising from QSPs of general type and generalized parameters.

Background

Quantum integrable lattice models, such as the six-vertex model and the XXZ spin chain, are solved through transfer matrices: traces over an auxiliary space of products of R-matrices, which are matrix solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation depending on a spectral parameter zz. For periodic boundary conditions the algebraic structure of the transfer matrices is understood in a universal way through the universal R-matrix of a quantum affine algebra Uq(g^)U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}) (a Hopf-algebra deformation of the enveloping algebra of an affine Kac-Moody algebra). For open (reflecting) boundary conditions, Sklyanin's double-row transfer matrix construction weights the two chain ends by K-matrices satisfying the reflection equation, the boundary analogue of the Yang-Baxter equation; which K-matrices are admissible, and which functional relations govern open-boundary spectra, is far less understood.

The systematic algebraic origin of K-matrices is provided by quantum symmetric pairs. A QSP is a pair (Uq(g),Uq(k))(U_q(\mathfrak{g}),U_q(\mathfrak{k})) in which Uq(k)⊂Uq(g)U_q(\mathfrak{k})\subset U_q(\mathfrak{g}) is a coideal subalgebra (a subalgebra BB with Δ(B)⊆B⊗Uq(g)\Delta(B)\subseteq B\otimes U_q(\mathfrak{g}) for the coproduct Δ\Delta) deforming the enveloping algebra of the fixed points of an involutive automorphism of g\mathfrak{g} (a symmetric pair), parametrized by Satake-type diagram data with parameters. Balagovic-Kolb and Appel-Vlaar proved that every QSP of Kac-Moody type carries a universal K-matrix: an invertible element intertwining the coproduct action of Uq(k)U_q(\mathfrak{k}), constructed from a quasi K-matrix Υ\Upsilon (a formal-series element intertwining the bar involution of Uq(k)U_q(\mathfrak{k}), the anti-linear anti-automorphism underlying Lusztig's canonical basis, with a modified bar involution of Uq(g)U_q(\mathfrak{g})). In affine type, a cylindrical structure (a compatible grading-shift action of the multiplicative group) introduces the spectral parameter, and evaluation on finite-dimensional modules yields spectral K-matrices KV(z)K_V(z), including solutions for Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules (the distinguished finite-dimensional quantum-affine modules whose Drinfeld polynomials have a single nontrivial geometric progression).

Appel and Vlaar (arXiv:2410.21654, Indag. Math. 36 (2025) 1830-1862) combined these ingredients into a universal framework for boundary transfer matrices: a universal tensor K-matrix K‾\overline{\mathbb{K}} acting between suitable Uq(k)U_q(\mathfrak{k})-modules and Uq(g)U_q(\mathfrak{g})-modules, whose evaluations produce commuting boundary transfer matrices TV(W)(z)\mathscr{T}^{(W)}_{V}(z) generalizing Sklyanin's double-row transfer matrices, uniformly across QSP types and generalized parameter sets. The paper states several open problems: existence of cylindrical structures for all generalized parameters and classification of universal reflection-equation solutions (Conjecture 5.4.1), factorization of Υ\Upsilon in affine type (Conjecture 5.5.1), meromorphicity of KV(z)K_V(z) for all modules and generic parameters (Conjecture 6.4.1), classification of Kirillov-Reshetikhin-type solutions of the spectral reflection equation (Conjecture 6.5.1), and, in Section 6.9(6), the overarching goal: a universal description of spectra for quantum integrable systems with reflecting boundaries.

The template is the periodic case. Hernandez-Jimbo and Frenkel-Hernandez proved that Baxter's functional relations have a structural origin: the relevant Q-operators act on prefundamental (asymptotic) representations of the Borel subalgebra Uq(b+)U_q(\mathfrak{b}^{+}) of the quantum affine algebra, and the spectra of transfer matrices are determined by Baxter relations, TQ and T-system identities, viewed as relations in the Grothendieck ring of a suitable category of Uq(b+)U_q(\mathfrak{b}^{+})-modules, computed by the q-character map (a ring homomorphism encoding eigenvalue data of commuting transfer matrices). For reflecting boundaries nothing comparable exists: boundary fusion (TT) relations are known case-by-case for open chains, and explicit fused K-operators are available only for the q-Onsager algebra OqO_q, the coideal subalgebra of Uq(sl^2)U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{2}) governing the open XXZ chain, and its alternating central extension Aq\mathcal{A}_{q} (a central extension of OqO_q by additional alternating generators, the algebra in which the known universal transfer matrices for the open XXZ chain live), where the identification of the fused K-operators with a universal K-matrix remains conjectural.

Problem Statement

Construct the universal spectral theory, in the generality of the Appel-Vlaar boundary transfer matrix framework, for quantum integrable systems with reflecting boundaries arising from quantum symmetric pairs; that is, establish the boundary analogue of the Frenkel-Hernandez theory of Baxter relations. Concretely, for affine quantum symmetric pairs with generalized parameters (the enlarged parameter set ΓΣq\Gamma\Sigma_{q} of the source framework), and for the boundary transfer matrices TV(W)(z)\mathscr{T}^{(W)}_{V}(z) constructed from the universal tensor K-matrix K‾\overline{\mathbb{K}}:

(1) Establish the universal boundary fusion (TT) relations, including the construction of universal fused K-operators in the QSP framework; in particular, either prove the conjectural identification of the explicitly constructed fused K-operators for the alternating central extension Aq\mathcal{A}_{q} of the q-Onsager algebra with the action of a universal K-matrix and relate them to K‾\overline{\mathbb{K}}, or bypass it by another route yielding the same universal fusion relations for general types.

(2) Derive the universal Baxter (functional) relations for reflecting boundaries, the TQ relations and the associated T-system and Y-system relations, and construct the corresponding universal Q-operators, removing the currently conditional status of the rank-one results.

(3) Realize these relations structurally, for instance as relations in the Grothendieck ring of a suitable category of modules over a boundary Borel-type algebra (with the attendant boundary q-character or Harish-Chandra machinery), so that the spectra of quantum integrable systems with reflecting boundaries are determined by the theory in the same sense in which periodic spectra are determined by Baxter relations.

These three requested results jointly serve the single objective of a universal description of boundary spectra: the fusion relations and Q-operators are the operative objects whose Grothendieck-ring interpretation supplies the structural home, exactly as in the periodic template. A proof that such a universal theory cannot exist in the stated generality (an algebraic obstruction) is an admissible answer. A positive answer requires (1), (2) and (3) jointly. An obstruction qualifies only if it establishes, at the stated generality (affine quantum symmetric pairs with generalized parameters in ΓΣq\Gamma\Sigma_{q}), that at least one of (1)-(3) is impossible; a failure of a route this statement itself declares optional (such as the fused-K-operator identification that (1) permits bypassing) is not an obstruction to the theory and does not by itself resolve the problem. The problem is not restricted to special types (such as the q-Onsager or restricted-rank-one case), to special boundary conditions (such as diagonal K-matrices), or to special parameter values.
