In 2008, inelastic x-ray scattering on laser-shock-compressed lithium (E. Garcia Saiz et al., Nature Physics 4, 940-944) provided one of the first experimental constraints on the ion-ion structure factor of a warm dense light element, but the measurement was confined to two forward scattering angles with a few-eV probe bandwidth, could not resolve ion-acoustic modes, and its analysis chain depended on radiation-hydrodynamic equation-of-state modeling, force-matched classical potentials, and the Chihara decomposition. Since 2008, meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering, multi-q ion-structure measurements, and model-free x-ray Thomson scattering interpretation have each been demonstrated in aluminum, beryllium, carbon, methane, and gold, but not in warm dense lithium, which has seen no new scattering experiment since 2008/2009 and whose first-principles dynamic ion structure factor remains experimentally untested. The 2025/2026 warm dense matter roadmap still classifies meV-resolved ion-acoustic x-ray Thomson scattering on genuinely warm dense shock states as an open frontier. The open problem is therefore to determine the static ion structure and the ion-acoustic dynamics of shock-compressed warm dense lithium over a broad momentum-transfer range with quantified or eliminated model dependence, and to establish which microscopic ingredients (finite-wavelength electron screening, bound-electron contributions, finite-temperature exchange-correlation) any adequate ion-structure model must contain.
Background
Warm dense matter (WDM) denotes states with temperatures of a few electron volts and densities comparable to solids, in which Coulomb coupling, thermal excitation, and electron degeneracy are simultaneously important; such states occur in giant-planet interiors, in inertial-confinement-fusion implosions, and in laser-shocked laboratory targets. A primary tool for diagnosing WDM is spectrally resolved inelastic x-ray scattering, also called x-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS): a monochromatic x-ray probe scatters from the sample, and the energy spectrum of the scattered photons encodes the electronic dynamic structure factor , the Fourier-space density-density correlation function of the electrons at momentum transfer and energy transfer . In the standard Chihara decomposition, the measured spectrum is split into an elastic (Rayleigh) 'ion feature' whose strength is governed by the ion-ion static structure factor - the Fourier transform of the ion pair-correlation function, the central observable for how ions are microscopically arranged in a dense plasma - plus inelastic features from the electrons - plasmons (collective electron-density oscillations) and Compton scattering from individual electrons - which are used to infer temperature, density, and mean ionization. In 2008, E. Garcia Saiz and co-workers reported XRTS measurements on lithium foils shock-compressed at the VULCAN laser facility, reaching conditions of roughly eV, mass density g/cm, and mean ionization , probed with a 2.96 keV x-ray line at scattering angles of only and . Three limitations of that experiment define the present problem. First, the few-eV probe bandwidth and the forward-angle, two-point -sampling precluded resolving ion-acoustic modes - the collective oscillations of the ions, analogous to plasmons but with meV-scale energies and hence requiring meV-scale spectral resolution - and left weakly constrained. Second, could not be extracted directly: density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD, ab initio simulation with quantum electrons and classical ions) on affordable finite cells yields noisy structure factors, so the authors used force matching (fitting effective classical ion potentials to the ab initio forces) followed by classical Monte Carlo sampling to compute indirectly. Third, the plasma state itself was modeled with the HELIOS-CR radiation-hydrodynamics code, whose equation-of-state (EOS) and ionization predictions disagreed noticeably with the ab initio results, so the extracted structure inherited model dependence; moreover, simple ion-structure models of the era - unscreened one-component plasma (OCP, ions in a uniform neutralizing electron background) and weak electron-ion pseudopotential schemes (perturbative effective ion-electron interaction models) - failed to reproduce the measured , pointing to missing microscopic physics such as nonlinear electron screening (including its finite-wavelength dependence, known as local-field corrections, and bound-electron contributions) and finite-temperature exchange-correlation (the electron-electron interaction-energy input of density functional theory). Since 2008, the field has built meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering instruments at x-ray free-electron lasers, measured ion structure in several other light and mid-Z elements at multiple momentum transfers, computed first-principles dynamic ion structure factors, and begun replacing Chihara-type forward modeling with model-free inference of XRTS observables. None of these advances has been brought back to warm dense lithium itself.
Problem Statement
Determine, with quantified - and where possible eliminated - model dependence, the microscopic ionic structure and dynamics of shock-compressed warm dense lithium by inelastic x-ray scattering. Concretely: (1) measure the ion-ion structure factor over a momentum-transfer range materially broader than the two forward-scattering angles of the 2008 experiment, with enough independent points (including back-scattering) to fix the ion correlations; (2) resolve the low-energy ion-acoustic collective modes spectrally - which requires meV-scale resolution rather than the few-eV probe bandwidth available in 2008 - and obtain their dispersion and damping, and hence the ionic sound velocity and ion dynamics; (3) extract and the mode parameters through an analysis whose inputs (temperature, density, mean ionization) are independently constrained - e.g., from Compton/plasmon features or other diagnostics - rather than resting on radiation-hydrodynamic EOS and ionization models alone, with the residual model dependence of whichever analysis route is used quantified or eliminated; and (4) establish which microscopic physical ingredients - nonlinear and finite-wavelength electron screening, bound-electron contributions, finite-temperature exchange-correlation, and the treatment of partial ionization - an ion-structure model must contain to reproduce the measured and ion-acoustic spectrum, given that unscreened one-component-plasma and weak-pseudopotential models already failed against the 2008 data. These four requirements are jointly necessary to resolve the problem; a result that addresses only one of them does not resolve it.
