Dong, Horn, Matsuura, Silverstein and Torroba (Phys. Rev. D 85, 104035, 2012) constructed FRW cosmological solutions by uplifting concrete AdS/CFT dual pairs with magnetic flavor 7-branes, exhibited a warped metric indicating a -dimensional Lorentzian cutoff field theory whose number of degrees of freedom grows as , and proposed a microscopic explanation via string-junction states cut off at finite time by backreaction and topology. The precise dual, however, was not derived: the junction count rests on two unproven assumptions about 7-brane algebras and charged matter in F-theory compactifications, the nonperturbative definition of the time-dependent dual at finite time was never formulated, and the bulk-boundary dictionary matching the computed correlators (including pseudotachyonic modes) remains unbuilt. No subsequent work has resolved these cores; the problem remains open.
Background
The AdS/CFT correspondence (Maldacena 1997) equates quantum gravity on -dimensional anti-de Sitter space (AdS), typically arising as a flux compactification of string/M-theory in which a higher-form flux supports an AdS external space times a compact internal manifold, with a -dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). A long-standing goal is an equally precise holographic description of cosmological spacetimes such as de Sitter (dS) and FRW universes, where time dependence and the absence of a timelike conformal boundary invalidate the basic AdS/CFT dictionary.
Dong, Horn, Matsuura, Silverstein and Torroba (2012) constructed a concrete class of cosmological solutions by "uplifting" known AdS/CFT dual pairs. Starting from a flux compactification with an external space, they added magnetic flavor 7-branes — codimension-two branes of F-theory, the framework for string backgrounds with varying axion-dilaton coupling, characterized by their string charge — wrapping cycles of the compact space. Such branes change the curvature of the F-theory compactification base; writing for the net curvature change of the uplifted base relative to a flat one, yields AdS vacua while produces decompactifying cosmological solutions. With sufficiently many flavor branes the AdS vacuum is uplifted to a metastable de Sitter space that decays via a Coleman-De Luccia (CdL) instanton — a tunneling event describing vacuum decay in general relativity — into a non-accelerating FRW region, i.e. a homogeneous, isotropically expanding universe.
The paper exhibits a warped metric on the FRW solution whose redshifted low-energy region behaves like a -dimensional Lorentzian quantum field theory: at finite time this putative dual has a finite cutoff, a propagating lower-dimensional graviton, and a finite covariant entropy bound, while at late times its Planck mass and entropy diverge in a manner dominated by the low-energy sector, suggesting completion to a precise non-gravitational dual. Its number of degrees of freedom grows as , computed in three independent macroscopic ways (a quasilocal stress tensor, a covariant entropy bound, and a lattice-point count). A microscopic explanation is proposed: string junctions (bound states of strings stretched between 7-branes) whose light states realize infinite-dimensional (Kac-Moody-type) algebras, rendered finite at any given time by backreaction and by topological consistency (the contractible fiber circle and a giant-graviton bound on Kaluza-Klein momenta). Semiclassical correlators of massive and massless scalar modes were computed, including infrared "pseudotachyonic" modes — modes that grow because Hubble expansion redshifts effective masses below the Hubble scale — which dominate the correlators in the warped case. Color branes (the branes whose open strings would furnish the gauge sector of the original AdS/CFT dual) are ejected from the throat at finite time ("motion sickness"), while the flavor branes dominate at late times.
What the paper explicitly leaves open is everything needed to make this a derived duality rather than a proposal: a first-principles derivation of the junction-state count, which rests on two unproven assumptions — the realization of the infinite algebras on light junction states in 7-brane systems (conjectured but not proved by DeWolfe, Hauer, Iqbal and Zwiebach) and the charged-matter representation content of explicit F-theory compactifications; the precise nonperturbative definition of the time-dependent cutoff field theory at finite time (cutoff, renormalization, and operator/state mapping); a detailed bulk-boundary dictionary, including the interpretation of the computed correlators and pseudotachyonic modes in a strongly coupled, time-dependent QFT and the fate of the color sector; the generality of the magnetic-flavor uplift mechanism among possible uplifts; and correlator control beyond the semiclassical approximation.
Problem Statement
Construct, and derive from first principles in explicit string/F-theory compactifications, the precise holographic dual of the FRW cosmologies obtained by uplifting concrete AdS/CFT dual pairs with magnetic flavor 7-branes (), as proposed in Dong-Horn-Matsuura-Silverstein-Torroba (2012). All components below jointly serve this single objective — a UV-complete, quantitative holographic description of these time-dependent cosmological solutions whose microscopic state count and correlators reproduce the gravity-side results:
(1) Derive the microscopic state counting: establish (or refute) in explicit compactifications the two assumptions underlying the junction count — that light string-junction states in 7-brane systems realize the conjectured infinite-dimensional algebras with the corresponding junction spectrum, and that the required charged matter representations arise — so that the count of junction states available up to the finite-time backreaction/topological cutoff reproduces the gravity-side number of degrees of freedom .
(2) Formulate the nonperturbative definition of the putative -dimensional Lorentzian dual at finite time: its field content and time-dependent couplings, and the implementation of its finite cutoff, renormalization, and operator/state mapping in the strongly coupled, rapidly time-dependent setting in which the lower-dimensional graviton decouples only asymptotically at late times.
(3) Establish the detailed bulk-boundary dictionary: the map between bulk observables and dual operators sufficient to match the computed scalar correlators — including the role of the pseudotachyonic infrared modes and the power-law Kaluza-Klein two-point functions — and the treatment of the color sector (whether the ejected color branes are removed, kept, or encoded in the dual).
The source paper also raises, as one of several future directions, the question of whether the magnetic-flavor uplift mechanism is generic for cosmological holography or a special case among broader classes of uplifts; this generality determination is not a condition for completing the construction and derivation of the dual above. The source paper likewise leaves correlator control beyond the semiclassical approximation to future work; as with the generality determination, this is not a condition for completing the construction and derivation of the dual above, whose component (3) correlator matching is the matching of the scalar correlators computed there. A definitive negative result — for example a demonstration that the assumed junction algebras cannot be realized on physical light states, or that the count fails parametrically — would equally resolve the microscopic state-counting question of component (1) by refuting the proposed microscopic account, though it would not by itself complete components (2) and (3).
