Holographic inflation drives the early universe with a holographic energy density (with the reduced Planck mass and a dimensionless parameter), where the infrared cutoff (the particle or future event horizon) is combined with an ultraviolet correction ; the model reproduces Planck 2018 observables using approximate Hubble-flow relations, but completing its scientific assessment requires work left unfinished in the source, part of it flagged by its own authors. What remains open, and what this problem asks for, is the completion of the original model itself: a full perturbation analysis yielding exact scalar and tensor spectra (including the effective sound speed and stability of the holographic fluid), a quantitative reheating construction with its thermal history, and a microscopic or at least principled determination of and of the joint region allowed by observation.
Background
The holographic principle states that the maximum number of independent degrees of freedom in a spatial region scales with its surface area rather than its volume. Applied to dark energy, it suggests the holographic dark energy (HDE) ansatz (M. Li, 2004), where is the reduced Planck mass, is a dimensionless parameter, and is an infrared (IR) cutoff length, typically taken as a horizon scale: the particle horizon or the future event horizon . The successful late-time phenomenology of this ansatz motivated Nojiri, Odintsov and Saridakis (Phys. Lett. B 797 (2019) 134829) to apply it at early times: since the horizons shrink as one goes back in time, the holographic energy density naturally grows to inflationary scales. Because inflation is a high-energy regime, they corrected the cutoff by an ultraviolet (UV) contribution, , a form introduced in Nojiri–Odintsov, Phys. Rev. D 70 (2004) 103522; this UV term proves essential, since it allows graceful exit from the de Sitter phase (a period of exponential expansion) that would otherwise be exact. The model yields an analytic implicit solution for the Hubble rate , and the inflationary observables — the scalar spectral index of curvature perturbations, its running , the tensor-to-scalar ratio , and the tensor spectral index — are computed from the Hubble-flow (slow-roll) parameters, defined by and with the e-folding number. The resulting predictions agree with the Planck 2018 constraints (Akrami et al., arXiv:1807.06211) deep inside the 1-sigma region, with small for slightly above 1 when the future event horizon is used. The paper also shows, in a generalized-cutoff section, that a cutoff built from and its derivatives can reproduce Starobinsky inflation (the scenario where an gravitational action drives inflation through an extra scalar degree of freedom, the scalaron), and suggests correspondences with Gauss–Bonnet and teleparallel inflation models (modified-gravity theories built respectively from the Gauss–Bonnet curvature invariant and from torsion instead of curvature). Crucially, four gaps remain — (i) and (iii) flagged explicitly by the authors, (ii) and (iv) evident from the source itself: (i) the observables are extracted from approximate Hubble-flow relations, whereas exact expressions would require a full perturbation analysis of this specific model, along the lines of the late-time HDE perturbation treatment of M. Li, C. Lin and Y. Wang, JCAP 05 (2008) 023; (ii) reheating is only sketched qualitatively as a Starobinsky-like scalaron-driven transition; (iii) generalized IR cutoffs deserve systematic exploration; (iv) enters as a free phenomenological parameter with no microscopic motivation. The perturbation question is not a formality: the holographic fluid has no scalar-field Lagrangian, its density depends on , its derivatives and on horizon integrals, so its effective sound speed, the gauge-invariant treatment of the time-dependent cutoff, and the stability of perturbation modes must all be established before the published observable comparison can be considered exact.
Problem Statement
For holographic inflation as defined by Nojiri, Odintsov and Saridakis — a universe dominated by the holographic energy density with combined cutoff , where is the particle horizon () or the future event horizon () — complete the physical assessment of the model on the three fronts the source leaves incomplete (the fourth front — the systematic exploration of generalized cutoffs — is outside the scope of this problem; see Paul 2019 and Nojiri–Odintsov–Oikonomou–Paul 2020): (1) perform the full cosmological perturbation analysis of this specific model: derive the complete, gauge-invariant scalar and tensor perturbation equations for the holographic fluid, determine its effective sound speed and whether gradient (growth of short-wavelength modes) or ghost (negative kinetic energy) instabilities arise on the inflationary attractor, extract the exact power spectra, spectral indices, running, and tensor-to-scalar ratio, and quantify the deviation from the approximate Hubble-flow predictions on which the published Planck 2018 agreement rests; (2) construct reheating quantitatively for this model: the particle-production mechanism and its channel, the induced decay or dissipation rate, the resulting reheating temperature, and the transition to the standard hot-Big-Bang radiation era, as functions of the model parameters and ; and (3) resolve front (3) in two required parts: (3a) either derive from a microscopically motivated or internally consistent principle that fixes in terms of and the other model parameters (or to a definite value), stating that principle and the assumptions it rests on explicitly, or establish model-independent constraints on as an explicit interval on at a stated confidence level from named observables; and (3b) jointly with , determine, over the conventional e-folding range , the segment of the parametric observable curves that lies inside the Planck 2018 constraints, stating how that segment depends on .
