Sen's two-string-field formulation gives a covariant action for type II superstring field theory (SFT), including its Ramond-Ramond (RR) forms, but its component-level evaluation is incomplete. Mamade and Zwiebach (2025) extracted the massless NSNS and RR bosons: the quadratic action, the cubic couplings of one NSNS field to two RR fields, the RR gauge transformations, and an exotic, on-shell-closing diffeomorphism algebra. They left open two formulation-completion problems that jointly establish the component-level equivalence of this SFT with standard type II supergravity: (1) compute the full cubic NSNS self-interactions (graviton, Kalb-Ramond two-form, dilaton) of the two-field type II SFT and find the field redefinitions of fields and gauge parameters that bring the full interacting action and gauge transformations into standard supergravity form, as was done for the bosonic string in double field theory; and (2) extend the component analysis to the mixed RNS and NSR sectors containing the spacetime fermions, deriving the component action, the spacetime supersymmetry transformations, and their gauge algebra.
Background
String field theory (SFT) is a second-quantized formulation of string theory in which the basic object is a string field — a superposition of all string states, with the massless modes including the graviton. For closed superstrings in the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz (RNS) worldsheet description, the left- and right-moving fermions are each either antiperiodic (NS sector, giving half-integer-moded fermions and spacetime bosons) or periodic (R sector, giving integer-moded fermions and spacetime fermions). The NSNS and RR sectors are spacetime bosons; the mixed RNS and NSR sectors carry the spacetime fermions — the gravitini and dilatini, the graviton's and dilaton's supersymmetry partners. The GSO projection selects the type IIA (opposite-chirality gravitini) or type IIB (same-chirality gravitini) theory. Ramond-sector string fields carry 'picture numbers' (integer grading labels arising from the superconformal ghost zero modes), and correlators involving Ramond fields require picture-changing operators (PCOs), operators that change the picture of a state; the kinetic term of a naive single-field super-SFT cannot be written covariantly because of them.
Sen (2016) overcame this by introducing a theory with two string fields: a physical field (conventional pictures) and an extra field (unusual pictures in the R sectors), with the free action built from , where is the BRST operator (the nilpotent charge of the worldsheet gauge-fixing symmetry, which generates the physical-state constraints and the gauge symmetry of the string field). The extra field's degrees of freedom decouple, and the doubling it produces is the price for a covariant action — including for the type IIB self-dual RR five-form, whose field strength obeys with the Hodge dual, a case long known to resist a manifestly covariant action (Sen's mechanism introduces auxiliary potentials whose equations of motion impose self-duality). Interactions are organized by multilinear brackets forming an algebra (a graded vector space with a hierarchy of compatibly nested brackets generalizing Lie algebras), and the gauge algebra closes only on-shell, with field-dependent structure constants.
Mamade and Zwiebach (2025) evaluated this two-field type II SFT at the component level for the massless NSNS and RR bosons. They obtained the quadratic action in a 'democratic' form (all RR potentials and their duals appear, tied by duality relations), verified the physical and extra propagating degrees of freedom via an analysis of poles and residues, computed all IIB and IIA cubic couplings of one NSNS field to two RR fields to leading order in derivatives, derived the RR gauge transformations, and exhibited the diffeomorphisms: these act 'exotically' on both the physical and extra fields, and their algebra closes only on-shell with field-dependent structure constants. Field redefinitions relating the SFT RR variables to the supergravity field strengths were established to quadratic order in fields. They did not compute the NSNS cubic self-interactions, noting these are 'expected to be similar to those of bosonic strings when truncated to two derivatives' but must be verified explicitly; nor did they treat the fermionic RNS/NSR sectors.
The benchmark for the missing NSNS computation is the bosonic-string analysis of Hull and Zwiebach (2009) in double field theory (DFT, a reformulation of closed-string spacetime physics in a doubled coordinate space making T-duality — the equivalence of closed-string backgrounds related by inverting a compactification radius — manifest): there the cubic interactions of the bosonic string field theory were extracted and explicit field redefinitions were found that bring the action and gauge transformations to standard supergravity form to leading order in derivatives. Related context: Sen (2018) showed this type II SFT is background independent at the level of the equations of motion (background shifts are field shifts), though not at the level of the action; Mazel, Wang and Yin (2025) and the companion paper of Mamade and Zwiebach (2025) analyzed diffeomorphisms and the gauge algebra of closed SFTs; Hull (2025, 2026) constructed a modified action with shadow-sector self-interactions that is background independent at the action level and clarified the two-metric and exotic-diffeomorphism structure — but in a different action, and he states explicitly that for the original SFT it is 'not yet known whether further field redefinitions can relate the SFT symmetries to diffeomorphisms'.
Problem Statement
For the two-field (Sen) superstring field theory of the type II superstring, whose massless NSNS and RR bosonic content was evaluated at the component level by Mamade and Zwiebach (2025), complete the component-level construction and establish its equivalence to standard type II supergravity, specifically:
-
Cubic NSNS self-interactions and field redefinitions. Compute, from the two-field type II SFT — in which the interaction vertices are built from the physical string field alone, the extra string field entering the action only at quadratic order — the full cubic self-interactions of the massless NSNS fields — the graviton , the Kalb-Ramond two-form , and the dilaton — at least to leading order in derivatives (the two-derivative truncation under which the paper's quadratic action and NSNS-RR-RR couplings were obtained), for type IIA and type IIB. Then determine whether field redefinitions of the NSNS component fields (and, where needed, of auxiliary fields) and of the gauge parameters exist under which the full interacting action — quadratic terms plus cubic NSNS terms plus the already-computed NSNS-RR-RR couplings — and the gauge transformations take the standard type II supergravity form, and construct them explicitly if they do: the two-derivative Einstein-Hilbert, dilaton, and -field action (in the physical-minus-shadow difference structure the formalism produces) with standard diffeomorphisms and two-form gauge symmetry, with the exotic on-shell-closing SFT algebra mapped to the conventional one up to trivial transformations.
-
Fermionic (RNS and NSR) sectors. Extend the component-level analysis to the mixed RNS and NSR sectors, which contain the spacetime fermions (gravitini and dilatini): construct their contribution to the two-field SFT action at the component level, and derive the spacetime supersymmetry transformations of the full massless field content and the algebra they form together with the gauge symmetries in the two-field formalism, verifying closure up to equations of motion and trivial transformations.
Both parts serve one objective: the completed demonstration, at the component level, that the two-field type II superstring field theory reproduces standard type II supergravity — bosonic and fermionic sectors, action, symmetries, and algebra.
