A regular, neutral two-center bound state of an extremal D1-D5-P black hole and its anti-BPS counterpart, held apart by a Kaluza-Klein bubble in five-dimensional type IIB supergravity, reproduces the Schwarzschild geometry from the asymptotic region down to the photon ring and carries an entropy equal to one half of the Schwarzschild entropy in the macroscopic limit (Heidmann, Phys. Rev. D 109, 126015 (2024)). The open problem is whether the full program can be completed: whether the total entropy of the ensemble of all such neutral brane/antibrane bound states - including generic distributions of branes and antibranes along the bubble, i.e., solutions sourced by NN extremal centers, and near-extremal variants whose exterior is exactly Schwarzschild rather than a δ=2\delta=2 Zipoy–Voorhees metric - reaches the full Schwarzschild value SSchwS_{\mathrm{Schw}}, and whether these bound states are classically stable against Gregory–Laflamme-type modes. The question is open: a four-dimensional strut-supported analog always yields only a fraction of SSchwS_{\mathrm{Schw}}; the generic five-dimensional ensemble has been constructed, but its total entropy S(T)≈12SSchw+log⁡(#config.)S^{(T)}\approx\tfrac{1}{2}S_{\mathrm{Schw}}+\log(\#_{\mathrm{config.}}) - ranging between 12SSchw\tfrac{1}{2}S_{\mathrm{Schw}} and SSchwS_{\mathrm{Schw}} - is fixed only up to the undetermined multiplicity #config.\#_{\mathrm{config.}} (Heidmann and Mehta, JHEP 03 (2024) 046); and the AdS3_3 analogs are found to be dynamically unstable under axisymmetric perturbations with a shallow instability potential and slow decay rate, but no Gregory–Laflamme-type mode spectrum has been computed for the five-dimensional bound states.

Background

The Bekenstein–Hawking entropy assigns to a black hole of horizon area AA the entropy S=A/(4G)S=A/(4G); explaining this entropy by counting microscopic quantum states is a central test of any quantum theory of gravity. String theory passed this test for special, supersymmetric black holes: Strominger and Vafa (1996) counted the bound states of three kinds of branes - D1-branes, D5-branes, and momentum (P) carried by strings, with integer charges N1,N5,NPN_1, N_5, N_P - in type IIB string theory (one of the five consistent ten-dimensional superstring theories, whose low-energy limit is the supergravity used below) compactified on a circle and a torus, reproducing exactly the entropy of the five-dimensional extremal (BPS, i.e., supersymmetric and of minimal mass at fixed charge) D1-D5-P black hole, S=2πN1N5NPS=2\pi\sqrt{N_1 N_5 N_P}. The same machinery has never worked for the archetype non-supersymmetric case: the neutral, four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, whose entropy SSchw=4πM2S_{\mathrm{Schw}}=4\pi\mathcal{M}^2 (in units G=1G=1, with M\mathcal{M} the mass) has no brane-based microscopic accounting, despite older perturbative studies of interacting brane/antibrane systems (Horowitz, Maldacena, Strominger and collaborators, 1996–1998).

Heidmann (Phys. Rev. D 109, 126015 (2024); arXiv:2312.12496) constructed a bridge between the two regimes. Within five-dimensional type IIB supergravity with one direction compactified on a circle, the solution is a regular, static, neutral bound state of two extremal black holes sitting at the two poles of a Kaluza–Klein (KK) bubble - a smooth region where the compact circle degenerates to zero size, whose topological pressure replaces the unphysical conical struts of four-dimensional multi-black-hole Weyl solutions (the general static, axisymmetric vacuum solutions of the four-dimensional Einstein equations). One pole hosts a BPS D1-D5-P black hole, the other an anti-BPS one with exactly opposite charges; the ADM mass (the total gravitational mass measured at infinity) matches the Schwarzschild mass. Because the constituents are extremal, their individual entropies admit the Strominger–Vafa microscopic interpretation, and the total entropy S=2π(N1N5NP+N1ˉN5ˉNPˉ)S=2\pi(\sqrt{N_1 N_5 N_P}+\sqrt{N_{\bar 1} N_{\bar 5} N_{\bar P}}) has a non-interacting brane/antibrane description in which the gravitational interaction is encoded in the charge–mass relations. In the macroscopic regime M≫Rψ\mathcal{M}\gg R_\psi (mass much larger than the KK scale RψR_\psi regularizing the geometry), the equilibrium constraints force the charges to scale as NI∝M4/3N_I\propto\mathcal{M}^{4/3} - the exact power needed for SS to scale as M2\mathcal{M}^2 like a black hole rather than as M3/2\mathcal{M}^{3/2} like ordinary matter - and one finds S=12SSchwS=\tfrac{1}{2}S_{\mathrm{Schw}} and surface gravity κ=2κSchw\kappa=2\kappa_{\mathrm{Schw}}, up to corrections of order ϵ=(Rψ/2M)2/3\epsilon=(R_\psi/2\mathcal{M})^{2/3}. The spacetime resembles Schwarzschild from infinity down to the photon ring (the characteristic scale 33 M3\sqrt{3}\,\mathcal{M} of circular photon orbits), below which the horizon is replaced by the brane/antibrane microstructure.

Three gaps separate this construction from a microscopic explanation of the Schwarzschild entropy. First, entropy completeness: the 1/21/2 is the entropy of one highly polarized two-center family; the full phase space of neutral bound states - branes and antibranes distributed at many points along the bubble, corresponding to solutions of the (static, axially symmetric) Ernst equations (a standard rewriting of the Einstein equations for static, axisymmetric metrics) sourced by NN extremal centers, for which the generic construction and an ensemble-entropy estimate up to an undetermined multiplicity #config.\#_{\mathrm{config.}} are already known (Heidmann and Mehta, JHEP 03 (2024) 046) - has a total entropy that is fixed only once #config.\#_{\mathrm{config.}} is determined. Second, exact matching: the two-center exterior is classically indistinguishable from a δ=2\delta=2 Zipoy–Voorhees metric (the quadrupole-distorted Schwarzschild member of the Zipoy–Voorhees family of static axisymmetric metrics) rather than the exact Schwarzschild metric, and it is unclear a priori whether this discrepancy can be removed; the source suggests near-extremal (slightly non-extremal) constituents as the remedy. Third, stability: equilibrium does not imply dynamical stability, and extended horizon-like objects are generically subject to the Gregory–Laflamme instability - the Rayleigh–Plateau-type fragmentation instability of black strings and branes discovered by Gregory and Laflamme (1994) - so unstable modes could force the bound state to coalesce or change topology, undermining the ensemble interpretation.

Problem Statement

Determine whether neutral brane/antibrane bound states in five-dimensional type IIB supergravity (one direction compactified) provide a complete and viable microscopic account of the Schwarzschild black hole, extending the construction of Heidmann (Phys. Rev. D 109, 126015 (2024)) beyond its two-center, one-half-entropy limit. Concretely, in the macroscopic regime where the ADM mass M\mathcal{M} is much larger than the Kaluza–Klein scale RψR_\psi:

  1. Ensemble completeness. Determine the multiplicity #config.\#_{\mathrm{config.}} and the resulting total entropy of the full ensemble of generic neutral bound states in which branes and antibranes are distributed along the KK bubble - regular supergravity solutions sourced by NN extremal D1-D5-P centers of alternating BPS/anti-BPS type, whose construction via the Ernst-equation techniques of Heidmann and Mehta is already known. Decide whether this total reaches the full Schwarzschild entropy SSchw=4πM2S_{\mathrm{Schw}}=4\pi\mathcal{M}^2 at leading order in ϵ=(Rψ/2M)2/3\epsilon=(R_\psi/2\mathcal{M})^{2/3} (the two-center family gives 12SSchw\tfrac12 S_{\mathrm{Schw}}), and identify which distributions contribute the dominant entropy beyond the two-center value. The total may fail to reach SSchwS_{\mathrm{Schw}}; in that case the total entropy must still be determined at leading order in ϵ\epsilon.

  2. Exact Schwarzschild matching. Determine whether bound states in five-dimensional type IIB supergravity can be constructed whose exterior metric is the exact Schwarzschild geometry rather than a δ=2\delta=2 Zipoy–Voorhees metric, and determine their entropy fraction.

  3. Classical stability. Determine whether the bound states are dynamically stable: compute the Gregory–Laflamme-type mode spectrum of the linearized perturbations on the bound-state background and decide whether unstable modes exist that force the constituents to coalesce or the bubble topology to change.

Deliverables 1–3 jointly support one objective - a microscopic brane/antibrane explanation of the neutral black hole - and each is an independent, separately refutable sub-problem.
