Haldane's exact solution of the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain with inverse-square exchange (the Haldane-Shastry chain) in terms of a gas of semionic spinons posed three open problems: the wave functions beyond the exactly known 'fully polarized spin gas' sector, the generators of the hidden SU(2) symmetries shared with the level-1 SU(2) conformal field theory, and the operator algebra underlying the chain's integrability and its relation to Bethe's solution of the nearest-neighbor chain - the last posed in the context of Inozemtsev's interpolating family of elliptic chains, whose integrability the paper further supported by a numerical-diagonalization study of the relation between spinon quantum numbers and Bethe rapidities. The surviving open core, formulated here as the problem, concerns the interpolation family itself: the quantum-algebraic (R-matrix / Yang-Baxter / Bethe-ansatz) structure underlying the integrability of the elliptic Inozemtsev chain and its exact eigenvectors - beyond the commuting Hamiltonians constructed by Chalykh (2024).

Background

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg (XXX) antiferromagnet on a periodic ring of NN sites, HXXX=∑n=1NS⃗n⋅S⃗n+1H_{\mathrm{XXX}}=\sum_{n=1}^{N}\vec S_n\cdot\vec S_{n+1} with S⃗n\vec S_n the spin operator at site nn, is the paradigm of an integrable quantum chain: Bethe's 1931 ansatz diagonalizes it in terms of MM complex rapidities (one per flipped spin, or magnon) obeying algebraic equations now understood to follow from an RR-matrix satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation, the consistency condition R12R13R23=R23R13R12R_{12}R_{13}R_{23}=R_{23}R_{13}R_{12} for factorized scattering that underlies the quantum inverse scattering method. In 1988 Haldane and Shastry independently introduced the variant with inverse-square exchange at chord distance,

HHS=∑i<jS⃗i⋅S⃗j−1/4sin⁡2[π(i−j)/N],H_{\mathrm{HS}}=\sum_{i<j}\frac{\vec S_i\cdot\vec S_j-1/4}{\sin^2[\pi(i-j)/N]},

which is also exactly solvable but by different means. Haldane (1991) showed that its full spectrum and thermodynamics are those of an ideal gas of N/2N/2 spinons - semionic spin-1/2 quasiparticles whose exchange statistics interpolate between bosons and fermions, with statistical phase eiπ/2\mathrm{e}^{\mathrm{i}\pi/2} - and that the chain is a discrete, finite-size analogue of the SU(2) level-1 Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory (a 1+1-dimensional scale-invariant theory with affine su(2)^\widehat{\mathfrak{su}(2)} symmetry, the chain's continuum limit). The exactly known highest-weight sector of the spectrum consists of 'fully (spin-)polarized spin gas' (FPSG) states, whose wave functions are symmetric polynomials (Jack polynomials, a special orthogonal polynomial family) times a Jastrow-type product (a prefactor multiplying one factor per pair of coordinates); the remaining eigenstates satisfy a difference-differential Schrödinger equation in Fourier space (Eq. (7) of that paper). The same paper closed with three unsolved problems: the general non-FPSG wave functions; the generators of the hidden SU(2) symmetries (an apparent infinite tower beyond ordinary spin rotations) of both the chain and the conformal field theory, and whether such symmetries are special to this case; and the operator algebra underlying the chain's integrability and its relation to the Yang-Baxter structure of the nearest-neighbor chain solved by Bethe - the last posed in the context of Inozemtsev's one-parameter family of periodic chains with elliptic exchange

Vκ(n)  ∝  ∑m∈Z1sinh⁡2[κ (n+mN)],V_\kappa(n)\;\propto\;\sum_{m\in\mathbb{Z}}\frac{1}{\sinh^{2}[\kappa\,(n+mN)]},

(a Weierstrass ℘\wp-function with real period NN and imaginary period iπ/κ\mathrm{i}\pi/\kappa, up to normalization), which interpolates between the Haldane-Shastry chain at κ=0\kappa=0 and the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg chain at κ=∞\kappa=\infty. As further evidence for the integrability of this family, the paper cited a numerical-diagonalization study of the relation between the spinon quantum numbers of the κ=0\kappa=0 limit and the complex Bethe rapidities of the κ=∞\kappa=\infty limit. Inozemtsev had shown the family is exactly solvable throughout by an extended coordinate Bethe ansatz - a wave-function ansatz in which magnons interact through eigenfunctions of the elliptic Calogero-Sutherland model, the integrable many-body system of particles on a ring interacting via ℘\wp - but no operator-algebraic reason for this solvability was known. The subsequent literature settled the first two questions and the Haldane-Shastry instance of the third. The hidden symmetry is the Yangian Y(sl2)Y(\mathfrak{sl}_2), the Hopf-algebraic quantum group generated by the total spin together with nonlocal level-1 charges; the eigenspaces organize into Yangian multiplets labeled by motifs, binary occupation sequences encoding the spinon momenta (Haldane, Ha, Talstra, Bernard and Pasquier 1992; Bernard, Gaudin, Haldane and Pasquier 1993, who derived the structure from a transfer matrix obeying a long-range Yang-Baxter equation and exhibited the FPSG wave functions as symmetric polynomials). On the conformal-field-theory side, Yangian symmetry and spinon bases are not special: they exist in higher-level SU(2) WZW models and in all SU(n) level-1 WZW models (Bernard, Pasquier and Serban 1994; Schoutens 1994; Bouwknegt, Ludwig and Schoutens 1994, 1995; Bouwknegt and Schoutens 1996). For the Haldane-Shastry chain the commuting conserved charges were constructed systematically (Talstra and Haldane 1995), the degeneracy structure was analyzed through Yangian representation theory (Finkel and González-López 2005; Schuricht 2008), and the complete eigenbasis - including the Yangian descendant states (those beyond highest weight, generated by repeated level-1 action), i.e. precisely the non-FPSG sector - was recently constructed via a Bethe algebra inside the spin Calogero-Sutherland model and an 'internal' algebraic Bethe ansatz (Ferrando, Lamers, Levkovich-Maslyuk and Serban 2025; Jiang, Lamers and Miao 2026, who also obtained determinant formulae for norms and overlaps). For the interpolation family, the elliptic Calogero-Sutherland route was refined and the two-magnon sector solved completely (Klabbers and Lamers 2022), the commuting Hamiltonians of the elliptic chain were constructed from elliptic Dunkl operators - auxiliary operators whose symmetric combinations commute - combined with 'freezing', the strong-coupling limit in which the Calogero-Sutherland coordinates freeze at a classical equilibrium and the spin chain emerges (Chalykh 2024; cf. Liashyk, Reshetikhin and Sechin 2026), and a q-deformed (trigonometric) Inozemtsev chain was shown to be integrable with a face-type R-matrix (Klabbers and Lamers 2024). What no work has produced, for the original elliptic family, is an R-matrix / transfer-matrix (quantum inverse scattering) or algebraic-Bethe-ansatz construction, the exact eigenvectors, or the spinon-rapidity correspondence beyond two magnons; the recent reviews (Klabbers and Lamers 2024, 2026) state these as open problems.

Problem Statement

The source (Haldane 1991) closes with: 'Various unsolved problems remain: The general solution of (7) for the non-FPSG wave functions is needed, and the generators of the hidden SU(2) symmetries of (1) and the k=1 SU(2) WZW CFT must be found; an obvious question is whether they are special to this case or also occur in other CFT's. Another issue is the identification of the operator algebra underlying the evident integrability of the system, and its relation to that of the nearest-neighbor exchange model solved by Bethe. In this context, Inozemtsev has recently given persuasive arguments for the integrability of the family of S=1/2 Heisenberg chains with exchange (22) which interpolates between the two models. Further evidence that (22) is integrable comes from a numerical-diagonalization study of the relation of the spinon quantum numbers of the κ=0\kappa=0 model (1) to the complex rapidities of Bethe's κ=∞\kappa=\infty model.' The surviving open core, posed here as the problem, is the operator-algebraic completion of the interpolation between the Haldane-Shastry chain (κ=0\kappa=0) and the Heisenberg XXX chain (κ=∞\kappa=\infty), comprising two linked parts.

(1) Quantum-algebraic structure: identify the structure underlying the integrability of the Inozemtsev family of periodic NN-site chains with Hamiltonian Hκ=∑i<jVκ(i−j) S⃗i⋅S⃗jH_\kappa=\sum_{i<j}V_\kappa(i-j)\,\vec S_i\cdot\vec S_j (up to the conventional additive and multiplicative constants), Vκ(n)∝∑m∈Zsinh⁡−2[κ(n+mN)]V_\kappa(n)\propto\sum_{m\in\mathbb{Z}}\sinh^{-2}[\kappa(n+mN)], beyond the already available commuting Hamiltonians, that generates a commuting hierarchy including the translation operator and HκH_\kappa for all finite NN and all 0<κ<∞0<\kappa<\infty, and that makes explicit its relation to the Yangian/Bethe-algebra structures of the two limiting chains.

(2) Exact spectrum: construct the exact eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the elliptic chain at finite size, for arbitrary chain length NN and magnon number MM. The extended coordinate ansatz of Inozemtsev, which expresses the wave functions through elliptic Calogero-Sutherland eigenfunctions but does not yield explicit spin-chain rapidity or eigenvalue equations, does not by itself provide such a construction.

The two parts form one objective: the algebraic structure is expected to yield the spectral construction, matching the source's request for the identification of the operator algebra underlying the integrability and its relation to that of the nearest-neighbor exchange model solved by Bethe. The known two-magnon spinon-rapidity correspondence (Klabbers and Lamers 2022) is a consistency constraint on any candidate structure; its complete characterization at arbitrary magnon number remains an open direction of independent interest, the source itself having cited the spinon-rapidity relation as numerical evidence for integrability rather than as a posed problem.
