Whether a finite-dimensional spin glass retains a glassy phase when an external magnetic field explicitly breaks time-reversal symmetry is one of the longest-standing open questions in disordered-systems physics. Parisi, Ricci-Tersenghi and Ruiz-Lorenzo (Phys. Rev. B 57, 13617 (1998)) studied the four-dimensional Gaussian Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass in a field by off-equilibrium simulations, finding a mean-field-like structure (qmin⁡<qˉ<qmax⁡q_{\min}<\bar q<q_{\max}, a fluctuation-dissipation violation function depending only on the correlation) and leaving open five connected issues: the direct in-field verification of the statics-dynamics equivalence X(C)=x(q)X(C)=x(q); the full equilibrium overlap distribution P(q)P(q) (continuous part and delta-component weights); the order and universality class of the field transition, given the absence of a weak-coupling fixed point in the Bray-Roberts reduced renormalization-group treatment; the low-field regime h→0+h\to 0^{+}; and the systematic location of the transition line Tc(h)T_c(h). Later work resolved part of this: the Janus Collaboration (PNAS 2012) obtained strong equilibrium evidence for a continuous transition in four dimensions with new critical exponents at moderate fields, reinforced by five- and six-dimensional simulations (2024-2025), while the theoretical characterization of the universality class below the upper critical dimension remains contested. The surviving open core is the direct in-field statics-dynamics equivalence, the full equilibrium P(q)P(q) inside the field-induced glassy phase, the small-field limit, and the analytic renormalization-group picture.

Background

A spin glass is a magnet whose interactions ('bonds') are randomly ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, so that the low-temperature state is frozen but microscopically disordered and equilibration is extremely slow. The standard lattice model is the Edwards-Anderson (EA) Ising spin glass, with Ising spins σi=±1\sigma_i=\pm 1 on a hypercubic lattice, nearest-neighbour random couplings JijJ_{ij}, and Hamiltonian H=−∑⟨ij⟩Jijσiσj−∑ihiσiH=-\sum_{\langle ij\rangle}J_{ij}\sigma_i\sigma_j-\sum_i h_i\sigma_i in an external field. In four dimensions with Gaussian JijJ_{ij} of zero mean and unit variance, the zero-field transition temperature is Tc≃1.8T_c\simeq 1.8.

The spin-glass order parameter is not a magnetization but the overlap q=N−1∑iσiτiq=N^{-1}\sum_i\sigma_i\tau_i between two independent replicas (σ\sigma and τ\tau, two copies of the system sharing the same disorder), whose equilibrium probability distribution P(q)P(q) distinguishes the competing theories of the low-temperature phase. In the mean-field (fully connected, Sherrington-Kirkpatrick) solution with replica symmetry breaking (RSB, Parisi's hierarchical description in which the Gibbs state splits into many pure states), a field leaves a transition line, found by de Almeida and Thouless, below which P(q)P(q) is nontrivial: P(q)=(1−xM) δ(q−qmax⁡)+xm δ(q−qmin⁡)+p~(q)P(q)=(1-x_{\rm M})\,\delta(q-q_{\max})+x_{\rm m}\,\delta(q-q_{\min})+\tilde p(q), where xmx_{\rm m} is the weight of the delta component at qmin⁡q_{\min}, 1−xM1-x_{\rm M} is the weight of the delta component at qmax⁡q_{\max}, and p~(q)\tilde p(q) is a continuous part supported on [qmin⁡,qmax⁡][q_{\min},q_{\max}]. In the droplet model, by contrast, any field destroys the glassy phase at finite dimension and P(q)P(q) collapses to a single delta function. The analytic theory of the in-field transition is itself subtle: Bray and Roberts projected the replica field theory onto the replicon sector (the only critical mode in a field) and found no weak-coupling fixed point even near six dimensions, which is often read as hinting at a first-order or otherwise nonstandard transition.

Off-equilibrium (aging) simulations offer a way around the forbidding equilibration times, because very large samples can be studied without thermalizing. In this regime the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT), which at equilibrium links the response RR to the time-derivative of the two-time spin autocorrelation C(t,t′)=N−1∑i⟨σi(t)σi(t′)⟩C(t,t')=N^{-1}\sum_i\langle\sigma_i(t)\sigma_i(t')\rangle, is violated: mean-field theory of glassy dynamics predicts R=βX(C) ∂C/∂t′R=\beta X(C)\,\partial C/\partial t' (with β=1/T\beta=1/T) with a violation factor depending only on the correlation, and in the long-time limit X(C)→x(q)X(C)\to x(q) when C→qC\to q, where x(q)=∫qmin⁡qP(q′) dq′x(q)=\int_{q_{\min}}^{q}P(q')\,dq' is the static cumulative of the overlap distribution. In integrated form, perturbing the aged system with a small uncorrelated random field of amplitude ϵ0\epsilon_0 and projecting the response onto the perturbation pattern (the staggered magnetization msm_s), the measured combination satisfies msT/ϵ0≃S(C)m_s T/\epsilon_0\simeq S(C) with S(C)=∫C1x(q) dqS(C)=\int_{C}^{1}x(q)\,dq; in equilibrium (FDT) S(C)=1−CS(C)=1-C is a straight line, the droplet model predicts a flat portion below the equilibrium overlap, and RSB predicts an intermediate smooth curve encoding p~(q)=−S′′(q)\tilde p(q)=-S''(q). This statics-dynamics equivalence had been verified numerically at zero field (Marinari, Parisi, Ricci-Tersenghi and Ruiz-Lorenzo, J. Phys. A 31, 2611 (1998)).

The source paper (Parisi, Ricci-Tersenghi and Ruiz-Lorenzo, Phys. Rev. B 57, 13617 (1998)) extended this program to the four-dimensional model in a Gaussian random field hih_i of zero mean and variance h02h_0^2 (for Gaussian couplings, a uniform field of strength h0h_0 is mapped by a local gauge transformation of the bonds onto a random field of the same variance; the authors take its distribution Gaussian rather than bimodal because the Gaussian choice allows the exact integration-by-parts relation (1−qˉ)/T=⟨σihi⟩‾/h02(1-\bar q)/T=\overline{\langle\sigma_i h_i\rangle}/h_0^2 for the mean overlap qˉ\bar q, valid at equilibrium in any finite volume). Annealing simulations on lattices up to 40440^4 gave, inside the low-temperature phase, a bifurcation qmin⁡<qˉ<qmax⁡q_{\min}<\bar q<q_{\max} (e.g. Tc(h0=0.3)≃1.2T_c(h_0=0.3)\simeq 1.2), and the violation function depended only on the autocorrelation, excluding the horizontal (droplet) prediction. However, the off-equilibrium overlap cannot by itself reconstruct the whole P(q)P(q); the curvature of S(C)S(C) indicated only that p~(q)\tilde p(q) is small. The paper therefore left open the five connected questions listed in the problem statement, which together amount to determining the equilibrium structure of the four-dimensional spin glass in a field and its relation to the off-equilibrium dynamics that probe it.

Problem Statement

Determine the equilibrium structure of the low-temperature phase of the four-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass in a magnetic field and its relation to the off-equilibrium dynamics that probe it, as posed by the open questions of Parisi, Ricci-Tersenghi and Ruiz-Lorenzo (1998). The continuity of the in-field transition, the numerical values of its critical exponents, and the location of the transition line at moderate fields already have strong numerical answers in four dimensions [9], reinforced by five- and six-dimensional simulations [17, 19], and are settled results rather than open questions. The open questions are the following four, each independent of the others: (i) verify directly and quantitatively, in the presence of a non-zero field, that the off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation violation function X(C)X(C) coincides with the static cumulative x(q)=∫qmin⁡qP(q′) dq′x(q)=\int_{q_{\min}}^{q}P(q')\,dq' of the equilibrium overlap distribution P(q)P(q) (where qq is the overlap between two independent replicas sharing the same disorder) in the limit of long waiting time twt_w and observation time tt in which the autocorrelation C(t,tw)C(t,t_w) approaches qq (the in-field statics-dynamics equivalence); (ii) determine the full equilibrium P(q)P(q) inside the field-induced glassy phase of the four-dimensional model — the continuous part p~(q)\tilde p(q) on [qmin⁡,qmax⁡][q_{\min},q_{\max}] and the weights of the delta components at qmin⁡q_{\min} and qmax⁡q_{\max} — beyond the extremes accessible from off-equilibrium extrapolations; (iii) establish the analytic characterization of the field transition's universality class, reconciling the numerical exponents with the absence of a weak-coupling fixed point in the Bray-Roberts reduced replicon renormalization group below the upper critical dimension; and (iv) characterize the low-field regime h→0+h\to 0^+, where extrapolations are least controlled and the crossover to the zero-field universality class intervenes.
