Haldane's 1983 nonlinear field theory of the large-spin one-dimensional easy-axis Heisenberg antiferromagnet derives, as the continuum limit, the O(3) nonlinear sigma model with an easy-axis mass term, constructs its single soliton (a domain wall between the two degenerate Néel states), and quantizes it semiclassically. The paper explicitly leaves open: (i) whether the classical equations of motion remain integrable for nonzero mass, allowing multisoliton generalizations of the single-soliton solution; and (iii) nonperturbatively renormalized soliton rest energies and precise critical thresholds beyond the leading semiclassical and parametric results; it also introduces (ii) a Lorentz-breaking anisotropy term of strength but sets it aside ("will not be considered further here"), leaving its consequences for the soliton sector undetermined. A fourth question raised by the same paper, the required nonstandard quantization for half-integer spin, is resolved by the topological term and the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem and is not part of this problem. The three questions (i), (ii), and (iii) — the completion of the soliton theory of this model — remain open: no Lax pair, multisoliton construction, or non-integrability proof is known for the massive model; no dedicated quantitative treatment of the term on the soliton sector is known; and the renormalized soliton energies are controlled only at the exactly solved and studied endpoints, with no controlled computation in between.
Background
A one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin- chain with easy-axis anisotropy is described at the lattice level by with (the chain with single-ion anisotropy). Its classical ground state is the Néel state, in which neighboring spins alternate between two opposite orientations; "easy-axis" means the anisotropy favors alignment along the axis, leaving two degenerate Néel states related by a global spin flip. In the large- (semiclassical) limit, coarse-graining over many lattice spacings yields a continuum field theory for the unit-length Néel order parameter : the O(3) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) — the universal field theory of slowly varying order-parameter dynamics on the sphere — augmented here by an easy-axis mass term, , where is the coupling, the spin-wave velocity, the anisotropy frequency, and the components of transverse to the easy axis. Because the two Néel states are degenerate, the model admits a soliton: a localized domain wall in which rotates between the two easy-axis orientations, , where is the polar angle of , the spatial coordinate in the soliton's comoving frame (related to by a Lorentz boost of velocity ), the soliton position, the width, and the soliton's internal azimuthal precession frequency, which fixes the width through (the static, non-precessing soliton has and ; after semiclassical quantization ). The soliton's semiclassical dispersion is , where the quantized soliton spin takes integer (half-integer) for integer (half-integer) by a time-reversal argument. A soliton is the field-theory avatar of the domain wall that flips the Néel order; in spin chains a deconfined domain-wall fragment carrying spin is called a spinon. Quantum tunneling between topologically distinct sectors is generated by instantons (finite-action Euclidean trajectories connecting the vacua), giving a tunneling gap exponentially small in the semiclassical parameter. The magnon is the elementary collective excitation carrying , obtained by semiclassical quantization of the spin waves, with dispersion ; near the isotropic limit the nonlinear zero-point fluctuations ("instantons") renormalize the coupling to strong coupling and give the collective magnon mode a finite rest energy , with the ultraviolet cutoff length scale. Semiclassically the soliton energy gap is much larger than the magnon gap, while near the isotropic limit the renormalized soliton rest energy becomes lower than the renormalized magnon rest energy; for integer the soliton gap vanishes at a finite critical anisotropy , signaling a doublet-singlet transition of the Onsager/Ising-field-theory type to the singlet ground state of the nearly isotropic model exhibited by the strong-coupling rotator version of the model (for half-integer the soliton gap vanishes only at the isotropic point , a direct transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless/sine-Gordon type to the gapless easy-plane state). The sine-Gordon model is the integrable scalar field theory of a periodic potential whose kinks describe domain walls; when the azimuthal angle of is held fixed, the easy-axis sigma model reduces statically to a sine-Gordon-type problem, and in the easy-plane limit the full chain maps to sine-Gordon itself. The Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition is the topological vortex-unbinding transition that governs the easy-plane chain at the isotropic point. Two further anchors of the modern literature: the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem, originally for , and its generalizations prove that a half-integer-spin chain with one spin per unit cell cannot have a unique gapped ground state; and the topological theta term, a total-derivative term in the NLSM action with coefficient (Haldane's companion paper), encodes the distinction between integer and half-integer spin. At the O(3) NLSM is massless (flowing at long distances to the Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory, the exactly solvable scale-invariant theory describing the critical half-integer-spin chain), while away from it the spectrum is massive. The chain is exactly solvable by the Bethe ansatz, the algebraic method yielding exact spectra in the massive regime; its elementary excitations are kinks (spinons). With these definitions, the open questions addressed here concern the internal consistency and completion of the soliton picture: the integrability and multisoliton content of the classical massive model, the role of the Lorentz-breaking anisotropy that couples to the soliton sector through (with the azimuthal spin density), and the true nonperturbative soliton energies beyond the leading semiclassical order.
Problem Statement
Complete the soliton theory of the one-dimensional easy-axis antiferromagnetic continuum model — the O(3) nonlinear sigma model with easy-axis mass term, with Lagrangian density
for the unit Néel vector (Haldane, Phys. Rev. Lett. 50, 1153 (1983), Eqs. (8)-(10), DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.50.1153; is the coupling for spin quantum number , the spin-wave velocity, the anisotropy frequency, and the components of transverse to the easy axis) — by settling three linked questions the source paper left open. (a) Classical integrability and multisolitons: determine whether the equations of motion for are integrable (the case is integrable by Pohlmeyer's reduction): either establish integrability and construct multisoliton solutions — exact multi-soliton scattering configurations and bound states generalizing the single soliton with (where is the polar angle of , the comoving spatial coordinate, the soliton position, the width, and the soliton's internal azimuthal precession frequency), together with their scattering data — or establish non-integrability of the equations of motion for . (b) Lorentz-breaking anisotropy: determine the consequences, for the soliton sector of the easy-axis model — in particular the resulting changes in the soliton rest energy, width, and dispersion — of the perturbation (with the single-ion and exchange anisotropy parameters of the underlying lattice model) , where is the azimuthal spin density, which the source paper introduces and then sets aside ("will not be considered further here"); the source-identified facts to build on are that this term breaks Lorentz invariance — the property the paper uses to obtain the moving finite- soliton by a boost of the static soliton — and that in the easy-plane limit it changes the collective-mode light velocity from to , with stability requiring . (c) Nonperturbative soliton spectroscopy: compute the renormalized soliton rest energies beyond leading semiclassical order and the precise critical value of the anisotropy at the integer- soliton-doublet to singlet transition (sharpening the parametric condition ). In (a), "multisoliton" means the general -soliton solution for arbitrary soliton number ; in (b), the quantitative outcome is the change in the soliton rest energy, width, and dispersion to leading nontrivial order in ; and (c) is posed for general spin . The fourth question raised in the same passage of the source — the required nonstandard quantization for half-integer — is resolved (topological term, Haldane's companion paper; Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem and its generalizations) and is not part of this problem.
