Witten's 1995 study of M-theory on the orbifold (equivalent to type IIB string theory on a K3 surface) left several issues open: why each of the 32 orbifold fixed points can carry half-integer magnetic charge of the M-theory four-form field strength (argued only semiclassically through anomaly inflow); how the disconnected components of the moduli space of flat gauge connections on the five-torus are related physically, given that they are connected only through configurations that are not classical solutions; whether the proposed two-dimensional duality chain linking M-theory on , type IIB on , and the heterotic string on actually holds; what the twisted sectors of the analogous and orbifolds are; and what dynamical theory governs the moduli of fixed-point charges and five-branes. The half-integer charge value itself is already settled: it follows from the shifted quantization law of the M-theory antisymmetric tensor field and is confirmed in Matrix theory, so it is not part of the target. The remaining open problem is the microscopic and dynamical completion of the charge-sector structure: a first-principles classification of the bundle-moduli components and their quantum status, a complete verification of the two-dimensional duality chains, determination of the twisted sector, and a dynamical description of the charge/five-brane moduli space including the action of the relevant subgroup of .
Background
M-theory is the eleven-dimensional nonperturbative theory whose low-energy limit is eleven-dimensional supergravity, containing the metric, the gravitino, and a three-form gauge potential with four-form field strength . Its fundamental extended objects are the M2-brane (membrane) and the M5-brane (five-brane); the M5-brane carries one unit of magnetic charge of in the sense that the integral of over a four-sphere linking the brane equals 1. Horava and Witten had shown that M-theory on the orbifold — the circle modulo reflection of its coordinate, leaving a line segment with two ten-dimensional fixed 'end-of-the-world' boundaries — is the strong-coupling limit of the ten-dimensional heterotic string.
Witten (1996), extending work of Dasgupta and Mukhi, proposed that M-theory on the orbifold — the five-torus modulo inversion of all five circle coordinates, with fixed points — is equivalent to type IIB string theory on a K3 surface (a four-dimensional Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifold) and hence gives a six-dimensional theory with chiral supersymmetry (16 supercharges, of which the supergravity multiplet contains a self-dual two-form). In six dimensions, gravitational anomalies can cancel only if the supergravity multiplet is accompanied by exactly 21 tensor multiplets (each containing an anti-self-dual two-form and five scalars). The untwisted sector (fields invariant under the inversion) supplies only 5 of them, so 16 more must come from the twisted sectors localized at the 32 fixed points — apparently 'half a tensor multiplet per fixed point'. Witten resolved this paradox by proposing that a fixed point carrying magnetic charge (in units of the M5-brane charge) cancels, by a classical anomaly-inflow mechanism — a bulk interaction whose symmetry variation feeds charge onto the defect, here the coupling of the four-form field strength to , a gravitational Chern-Simons seven-form — precisely the anomaly that half a tensor multiplet would cancel. The allowed charge configurations were claimed to obey two constraints: total charge zero, and charge at least at each fixed point; any such configuration should appear somewhere on the moduli space. The 'checkerboard' arrangement ( alternating so that paired fixed points contribute one tensor multiplet each) is invariant only under a finite-index subgroup of the mapping-class group (the group of large diffeomorphisms) of the five-torus, with the full group restored by moving five-branes. When one circle of the orbifold shrinks, equal and opposite charges superpose and cancel, recovering type IIB on K3 with vanishing three-form field strength .
The same paper tested the proposal against other dualities. Compactifying further on K3, the chain M-theory on should become, when the orbifold factor shrinks, type IIB on , and when the K3 factor shrinks (the acting also on the K3 homology, as analyzed in the companion work of Duff, Minasian, and Witten on heterotic/heterotic duality) the heterotic string on ; but, as the paper states, one did not immediately have tools to verify or disprove that equivalence. Two further orbifolds were left open: for the compactification is three-dimensional and anomaly-free, so a different method would be needed to determine the twisted-sector spectrum; for there are fixed points, matching the number of left-moving fermions required by two-dimensional anomaly cancellation, but the proposed one-fermion-per-fixed-point assignment was only a plausible suggestion. Finally, on the dual type-I side, flat connections (gauge connections of vanishing field strength) on the five-torus — equivalently, after T-duality (the equivalence between a string theory on a circle of radius and the same theory on the circle of inverse radius, exchanging momentum and winding modes), configurations of 32 D-branes, extended objects carrying gauge fields, on the orbifold — have a moduli space with many components labeled by 31 independent -valued D-brane parities at the fixed points. The bundle with exactly one D-brane at each fixed point is topologically trivial, yet cannot be deformed to the trivial connection through flat connections — only through configurations that are not classical solutions — so its physical status (distinct compactification sector or continuously connected vacuum) was left unresolved. (The paper's footnote 4 records that an earlier draft's claim of non-vanishing Stiefel-Whitney classes — characteristic classes measuring the twisting of a bundle — for was erroneous.) What was missing overall was a microscopic, quantum derivation of the charge quantization rules and a dynamical theory of the charge and five-brane moduli; the semiclassical inflow argument and the moduli-space claims were conjectural.
Problem Statement
The overarching unresolved objective, as left by Witten (1996) and not completed by the subsequent literature, is a microscopic and dynamical account of the nonperturbative charge sectors of M-theory on and its dual descriptions. The numerical value of the fixed-point charge — the half-integer — has been derived from the shifted C-field quantization law and confirmed in Matrix theory (the matrix-model description of M-theory), so the surviving target is everything beyond that value, in four linked parts. (1) Charge-sector and component structure: derive from first principles the complete constraint set on fixed-point charges (is 'total charge zero and charge at least at each fixed point' exact, or corrected by further quantization conditions?), and classify the components of the moduli space of flat connections on labeled by the 31 independent D-brane parities; decide whether the distinct components — including the bundle with one D-brane at each of the 32 fixed points — are distinct superselection sectors of the five-dimensional theory or dynamically connected vacua, and state precisely what physics the interpolation through configurations that are not classical solutions represents; and derive how the finite-index subgroup (and the full mapping-class group after five-brane motion) acts on these sectors. (2) Duality verification: determine whether the two-dimensional equivalence chain — M-theory on , type IIB on , and the heterotic string on with the acting on the K3 homology — holds beyond the existing massless-spectrum and anomaly-cancellation evidence, and whether it can be established as a consequence of M-theory proper rather than only from the assumed duality web. (3) Remaining orbifolds: determine the twisted-sector spectrum of the anomaly-free orbifold (no anomaly argument is available), and derive — rather than propose — the twisted sector of the orbifold , checking the suggested one-fermion-per-fixed-point picture against the Matrix-theory structure. (4) Dynamics: construct the dynamical description of the moduli governing fixed-point charges and five-brane motion — the target being the six-dimensional physics whose DLCQ (discrete light-cone quantization) description exists, with its stability conditions, obstructions, and charge-sector bookkeeping. These parts jointly support one objective: replacing the semiclassical anomaly-inflow and moduli-space conjectures of the originating paper with derived structure.
