Maldacena, Strominger and Witten (1997) matched the entropy of extremal black holes arising in M-theory on a Calabi–Yau threefold from M5-branes wrapped on a four-cycle to the statistical entropy of a two-dimensional (0,4) conformal field theory, including the leading correction proportional to the second Chern class, and posed four open questions: the macroscopic mechanism for moduli-independence of the corrected entropy away from the attractor point; macroscopic reproduction of the full nonlinear expansion of the statistical formula; the leading α′ correction, which amounts to a ground-state momentum shift , potentially from chiral-boson zero-point energy; and the assumption that BPS degeneracies do not jump when interpolating between the macroscopic and microscopic regimes. Later literature resolved the first question (higher-derivative fixed-point theorems, entropy functions), the -series part of the second (exact -corrected Wald entropy formulas), and superseded the fourth (wall crossing: indices jump; black-hole degeneracies are chamber-dependent "MSW invariants"). The surviving open core is a first-principles macroscopic derivation of the α′/quantum subleading entropy structure — including the correct ground-state shift — matching the exact D4–D2–D0 index on general Calabi–Yau threefolds.
Background
M-theory is the eleven-dimensional theory of quantum gravity that extends the strong-coupling limit of type IIA string theory; among its basic extended objects is the M5-brane, a five-dimensional membrane. Maldacena, Strominger and Witten (MSW) considered M-theory on , where is a Calabi–Yau threefold: a compact six-real-dimensional complex manifold with vanishing first Chern class, the internal geometry that preserves supersymmetry (a spacetime symmetry relating bosons and fermions) after compactification. A divisor — a complex codimension-one submanifold, or four-cycle, of — is fixed by integers . An M5-brane wrapped on carries magnetic charge and electric charges under the gauge fields of the compactification; in type IIA string language this is a bound state of D4-branes (Dirichlet-branes: solitonic extended objects on which open strings end) wrapping , D2-branes wrapping two-cycles, and D0-branes (point-branes). The five-dimensional object is an extremal (zero-temperature) black string; compactified further on a circle it gives a four-dimensional extremal black hole. Its states preserving some supersymmetry — BPS states, from Bogomol'nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield, protected against quantum corrections — are counted by protected indices rather than raw degeneracies.
MSW identified the decoupled worldvolume theory of the wrapped brane as a two-dimensional conformal field theory (a theory invariant under local rescalings of the worldsheet coordinates) with supersymmetry — four right-moving supercharges and none left-moving. Its left-moving central charge, the coefficient controlling the asymptotic density of states, is
where are the triple-intersection numbers of and pairs the second Chern class of (a characteristic class of the tangent bundle measuring its twisting) with the divisor. At large left-moving momentum , the Cardy formula — the universal large-charge asymptotics of the density of states of a two-dimensional conformal field theory, fixed by the central charge — gives the statistical entropy . The term reproduces the Bekenstein–Hawking area entropy of the corresponding supergravity solution, while the term matches the leading correction computed macroscopically from an interaction — a specific four-derivative correction to Einstein gravity whose coefficient in four-dimensional supergravity (the gravity theory with eight supercharges obtained from this compactification) is fixed by the same second-Chern-class data. In gravity with higher-derivative terms the appropriate macroscopic entropy is the Wald entropy, a Noether-charge functional that replaces the area law.
MSW evaluated the macroscopic entropy at the horizon values of the scalar moduli fields — the continuous parameters labelling the compactification geometry — using the attractor mechanism: for BPS black holes these horizon values are fixed by the charges, independent of their values at infinity. Microscopically, the counting is captured by the elliptic genus of the theory — a signed, protected partition function on a torus that counts states weighted by charges and fermion number — and the chiral two-form on the M5 worldvolume (a self-dual antisymmetric tensor whose partition function requires special handling, as emphasized by Witten) contributes to the left-moving zero-point structure.
The MSW paper left four questions. (i) What is the macroscopic mechanism making the one-loop () corrected entropy independent of the asymptotic moduli, given that it is computed at the fixed point? (ii) Can the full nonlinear series of corrections in of the microscopic entropy be reproduced macroscopically? (iii) What is the leading α′ correction, where α′ is the squared string length setting the scale of higher-derivative ("stringy") corrections — an effective ground-state momentum shift in the string picture, possibly from the zero-point energy of the left-moving chiral bosons, with independent anomaly-inflow computations (cancellation of a worldvolume quantum anomaly by the classical variation of a bulk term) finding an extra shift proportional to — and how does it arise in the semiclassical entropy formula? (iv) Does interpolating between the macroscopic and microscopic regimes leave the BPS degeneracies unchanged ("no jumping")?
The later literature supplied the key structures. Fixed-point theorems for higher-derivative supergravity (Lopes Cardoso, de Wit, Käppeli, Mohaupt) and Sen's entropy function — the reformulation of the exact entropy as the finite-temperature limit of a Euclidean path integral over an off-shell near-horizon geometry — control questions (i) and (ii). Five-dimensional higher-derivative supergravity with anomaly-controlled mixed gauge-gravitational Chern–Simons terms (Hanaki–Ohashi–Tachikawa; Castro–Davis–Kraus–Larsen; Kraus–Larsen) gives the five-dimensional picture. The Ooguri–Strominger–Vafa conjecture proposes that the exact black-hole partition function equals the squared topological-string amplitude (the topological string being a metric-independent twist of string theory computing the same higher-derivative corrections). Exact degeneracies are known for special geometries (Dabholkar–Denef–Moore–Pioline; Castro–Murthy). The M5-brane elliptic genus and induced D4–D0 charges were determined by Gaiotto, Strominger, Yin and collaborators. The wall-crossing framework answers (iv): BPS indices can jump when moduli cross walls of marginal stability — loci where multi-centered bound states can decay — so degeneracies are chamber-dependent; the black-hole-relevant chamber defines the "MSW invariants" (the Donaldson–Thomas invariants — integer counts of stable D4–D2–D0 bound states — at the large-volume attractor point), and for reducible divisors the index is a mock modular form, a -series whose modular transformation law closes only after adding a non-holomorphic piece (Denef–Moore; Alexandrov–Gaddam–Manschot–Pioline). The quantum-entropy program is currently pursued by localization — exact evaluation of supersymmetric path integrals by gauge-fixing fermionic symmetries — on (Ciceri–Jeon–Murthy), and recent work shows the Cardy regime fails in parts of the black-hole parameter space (Halder–Vafa–Xu).
Problem Statement
For an extremal black string (or, on further circle reduction, an extremal black hole) obtained from an M5-brane wrapped on a divisor of a Calabi–Yau threefold , carrying charges and left-moving central charge with , Maldacena–Strominger–Witten posed four questions: (i) the macroscopic mechanism for moduli-independence of the one-loop () corrected entropy away from the fixed point; (ii) macroscopic reproduction of the full series of corrections in of the microscopic entropy; (iii) the leading α′ correction, an effective ground-state momentum shift in the string picture, potentially from the zero-point energy of the left-moving chiral bosons — with anomaly-inflow analyses independently finding an extra shift proportional to — understood "in the context of the semiclassical black hole entropy formula"; and (iv) whether the interpolation between the macroscopic and microscopic regimes changes no BPS degeneracies.
Status: questions (i), the -series part of (ii), and (iv) are settled by later literature — (i) by higher-derivative fixed-point theorems and entropy functions, (ii) by the exact -corrected Wald entropy of Lopes Cardoso–de Wit–Mohaupt, and (iv) by the wall-crossing framework, in which indices do jump and the black-hole degeneracies are the chamber-dependent MSW invariants. What survives, and what this problem now asks, is the completion of the program for which those results are the foundation:
Derive from macroscopic first principles the α′-level and quantum subleading structure of the entropy of the wrapped-M5-brane black string, and its exact correspondence with the microscopic D4–D2–D0 index. Concretely: (a) exhibit, within a single semiclassical entropy computation, the ground-state momentum shift of the left-moving sector — reconciling the string-picture shift , the chiral-boson zero-point value , and the anomaly-inflow shift proportional to — so that the macroscopic entropy formula reproduces the microscopic one with the correct shift for general charges; and (b) determine the exact macroscopic counterpart of the MSW/D4–D2–D0 index, including its measure factor, the ensemble it is computed in, and its dependence on the chamber (the asymptotic moduli ), thereby fixing the sense in which an Ooguri–Strominger–Vafa-type relation between the black-hole partition function and the topological string holds.
A resolution must hold for general Calabi–Yau threefolds and general charge vectors — the generality in which MSW posed the question. Exact results are restricted to special geometries (heterotic-duality cases such as and , or the quintic at special charges). The two parts (a) and (b) are facets of one objective — a complete macroscopic account of the entropy of the MSW system matching the exact microscopic index.
