In 1989 Gu and Yang solved the one-dimensional N-fermion problem with pairwise delta-function interaction and m internal spin states by Bethe's hypothesis: they recast the sector-matching conditions as an operator relation, showed the two-body matching operators satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation, and obtained the explicitly factorized N-body S matrix together with the bound-cluster (string) sector. Three parts of the scattering program were left open and remain open. First, the Bethe hypothesis is assumed rather than proven: for three or more particles the kinematic conservation laws admit diffractive (momentum-redistributing) scattering, and a rigorous completeness result — that the Bethe states and string states exhaust the scattering states of the fermionic delta gas on the line — is not available in the literature, though analogous results exist for the bosonic gas and for spin systems on the circle. Second, the operator formalism is singular exactly at the string momenta of attractive bound clusters, where the denominators vanish and the cluster S matrices are derived only formally, without a controlled limiting procedure. Third, for one-dimensional systems violating Yang-Baxter consistency, such as three particles with unequal pairwise couplings, the full three-body scattering problem including diffraction is known only in special cases, in leading order near integrability, and numerically. The problem posed here is to complete this program: a complete scattering theory delimiting exactly where the non-diffractive Bethe/factorized-S-matrix structure is valid, including the singular string regimes of the integrable point, and accounting for diffraction outside it.
Background
One-dimensional quantum many-body systems with pairwise delta-function (contact) interactions are the paradigm of exactly solvable scattering problems. The Hamiltonian
describes particles on a line with coupling (repulsive for , attractive for ). For spinless bosons this is the Lieb-Liniger model (Lieb and Liniger, 1963; McGuire, 1964). For fermions the delta interaction acts only between different spin states, so the nontrivial problem concerns fermions in internal spin states, each particle carrying a label in and the wavefunction being antisymmetric under simultaneous exchange of coordinates and spin labels. This fermionic delta gas was solved by Yang (1967) with the nested Bethe ansatz (a recursive application of the ansatz in which the spin degrees of freedom of the -particle problem are themselves reduced to an -particle problem of the same type), and its matrix, the operator relating incoming to outgoing scattering states, was obtained by Yang (1968).
The coordinate Bethe ansatz, or Bethe's hypothesis, postulates that in each ordering sector of configuration space the eigenfunction is a finite superposition of plane waves built from a single set of momenta , distributed over the terms by the permutations. Physically this is non-diffractive scattering: the set of asymptotic outgoing momenta of any collision coincides with the set of incoming momenta, so many-body scattering factorizes into a sequence of two-body collisions. For this is forced by energy-momentum conservation; for the conservation laws also admit diffractive solutions in which outgoing momenta are redistributed, and the absence of such solutions is a nontrivial structural property of the interaction — in modern language, equivalent to integrability, i.e. to the validity of the Yang-Baxter equation for the two-body scattering operators.
Across each coincidence hyperplane , integrating the Schrodinger equation against the delta potential yields matching conditions relating the amplitude columns (vectors of spin amplitudes, one component per spin configuration) of terms whose momenta differ by an adjacent transposition. Gu and Yang (1989) recast these conditions as an operator relation with the two-body matching operator
where is the spin-permutation operator exchanging the spin labels of the particles at the ordered positions and . Consistency of the web of such relations for holds precisely when these operators satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation, the cubic braid-type relation guaranteeing that three-body scattering decomposes into pairwise collisions independently of the decomposition order. Gu and Yang verified it for their operators (the rational Yang-Baxter solution), thereby establishing the algebraic consistency of the fermionic Bethe ansatz, and obtained the factorized -body matrix
valid for real, pairwise distinct momenta. In the attractive regime the spectrum contains bound clusters, called strings: -particle bound states whose momenta are equally spaced on a vertical line in the complex plane, , with binding energy (a formula going back to McGuire's treatment of the bosonic model) and fully antisymmetric spin columns, possible when . Scattering involving such clusters is again non-diffractive and is described by products of the operators acting on amplitude columns constrained by cluster-type permutation conditions.
Three boundary issues of this construction, acknowledged in the source and in its later reformulations, motivate the present problem. First, Bethe's hypothesis is assumed: its algebraic consistency (the Yang-Baxter equation) is verified, but it is not proven that the delta Hamiltonian itself produces no diffractive outgoing waves for , nor is a complete scattering theory — asymptotic completeness, meaning that the Bethe and string states together span the space of scattering states — established. Second, the operators and are defined only when the scalar denominator is nonzero; within an attractive string one has exactly , so the derivation of the cluster matrices proceeds by formally multiplying through the vanishing denominators without a controlled limiting procedure, and degenerate limits (coincident momenta, ) are similarly untreated. Third, for one-dimensional systems whose interactions violate the Yang-Baxter consistency — for example three particles with unequal pairwise delta couplings — the full three-body scattering problem, including the diffractive channels, was noted to be difficult and left open. The later literature (reviews by Yurovsky, Olshanii and Weiss (2008) and Guan, Batchelor and Lee (2013)) has clarified the landscape — non-diffraction is now the operational criterion of one-dimensional integrability — but has not closed these three gaps.
Problem Statement
Complete the scattering program that Gu and Yang (1989) left open for the one-dimensional N-fermion delta-function gas: the Hamiltonian on the line with fermions in internal spin states and coupling . The common objective is a complete scattering theory that (i) delimits exactly where the non-diffractive Bethe-ansatz/factorized-S-matrix structure is valid, including the singular parameter regimes of the integrable point itself, and (ii) accounts for the diffractive scattering outside it. Three linked components jointly serve this objective.
(1) Bethe-ansatz exactness and coverage. Establish rigorously for this Hamiltonian (with its self-adjoint realization — the choice of domain and boundary conditions at the coincidence hyperplanes that makes the formal differential expression a self-adjoint operator — on the antisymmetric subspace of ) whether many-body scattering is non-diffractive for all and all : either prove asymptotic completeness — that the scattering states generated by the Bethe ansatz together with the bound-cluster (string) states exhaust the state space, with well-defined incoming and outgoing asymptotics — or determine precisely the regimes (couplings, momenta, ) in which diffractive components occur.
(2) The singular parameter values. Provide a well-defined and rigorously justified treatment of the matching-operator formalism at the parameter values where the denominators vanish: the string momenta of attractive clusters (, for which one ordering of the labels gives a vanishing denominator) and the degenerate limits of coincident momenta and . The treatment must show that the resulting cluster matrices and amplitude conditions are the correct limits of the generic-momentum construction.
(3) Scattering beyond the integrable point. For one-dimensional three-particle (and, where tractable, -particle) systems whose interactions violate the Yang-Baxter consistency — paradigmatically delta-function interactions with unequal pairwise couplings — determine the diffractive part of the scattering amplitude, exactly or with controlled error bounds, beyond the special cases already solved in the literature and beyond leading-order perturbation theory near the integrable point.
