Steven Weinberg's talk at the 1994 MIT Chiral Dynamics workshop (published in Lecture Notes in Physics 452) reported results in three directions: the leading isospin-violating pion-nucleon interactions (constants and , with a neutral-pion selection rule); a classification, with Eric D'Hoker, of non--invariant terms in effective Lagrangians with spontaneously broken symmetry by the fifth de Rham cohomology ; and a derivation of the exact degeneracy and algebraic structure of the large- baryon tower from Adler-Weisberger and superconvergence sum rules. The surviving open core is the baryon-tower mass-splitting mechanism: the sum-rule lemmas force exact tower degeneracy under tower-only saturation, so the observed splittings -- the nucleon- difference of about 293 MeV for -- must be generated by single-pion transitions from tower to non-tower states; which non-tower states enter which sum rules, at what order in , and with what mass pattern remains underived.
Background
Low-energy strong-interaction physics is organized by the approximate chiral symmetry of quantum chromodynamics (QCD): the light quarks' flavor symmetry is spontaneously broken to the isospin subgroup , making the pion the corresponding Nambu-Goldstone boson (a light spin-zero particle whose existence is forced by the spontaneous breaking). The modern description is an effective field theory -- chiral perturbation theory -- in which the most general local Lagrangian consistent with the symmetries is expanded in powers of momenta and light-quark masses.
In July 1994 Steven Weinberg gave an overview talk at the MIT Chiral Dynamics workshop, published as 'Strong interactions at low energies' in the proceedings, reporting work in three directions. Direction (i) isolated the complete leading isospin-violating pion-nucleon interaction in two constants: (the pion-nucleon sigma term, the scalar pion-nucleon coupling generated by the quark-mass part of the nucleon mass) and (the charge-symmetry-breaking constant, tied to the neutron-proton mass difference from ), with the consequence that isospin violation enters, at this order, only processes involving at least one neutral pion; the talk called for tests through pion-nucleon scattering lengths (the threshold parameters quantifying neutral-pion-nucleon interactions at zero energy). Direction (ii) settled a structural question about effective Lagrangians: a Lagrangian density may fail to be -invariant yet still yield a -invariant action if it changes by a total derivative. The Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term -- the anomalous pion self-interaction, writable via a five-dimensional construction as the integral of an invariant five-form over a ball whose boundary is compactified spacetime -- is the prototype. D'Hoker and Weinberg proved that such terms correspond one-to-one to generators of the fifth de Rham cohomology of the coset space (closed differential five-forms modulo exact ones), where is the spontaneously broken symmetry group and the unbroken subgroup; the Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly -- the quantum breaking of a classical chiral symmetry by fermion triangle loops -- is what forces the Wess-Zumino term into the effective action. Direction (iii), the source of the open core, concerns the baryon spectrum.
Current algebra relates equal-time commutators of chiral charges and currents to observable integrals; the Adler-Weisberger sum rule is the classic instance, tying an integral over pion-hadron scattering to the axial coupling of the target, and superconvergence relations are analogous constraints forced by the assumed high-energy falloff of scattering amplitudes. When such sum rules are saturated by narrow resonances (isolated hadrons approximated as spectral delta functions), they become purely algebraic statements about the matrix elements connecting the resonances. In parallel, in the large- limit introduced by 't Hooft ( being the number of quark colors; baryons become bound states of quarks), the nucleon is tied by single-pion transitions to a 'tower' of narrow baryon states with isospin equal to spin, , of common parity, whose transition amplitudes obey a contracted spin-flavor algebra (the symmetry generated jointly by spin and isospin rotations together with the pion-transition operators), as developed by Gervais and Sakita and by Dashen, Jenkins, and Manohar. Weinberg's talk proved two lemmas: first, if the sum rules are saturated by the tower states alone, with each isospin appearing at most once for each helicity, the tower must be exactly degenerate -- for any , not only asymptotically; second, the one-pion transition amplitudes between the degenerate tower states, with the spin and isospin operators, generate an uncontracted Lie algebra (with the group of spatial rotations, acting on orbital angular momentum) under which the tower transforms as a symmetric rank- tensor -- exactly the structure of the nonrelativistic quark model, obtained without the large- approximation.
The exact degeneracy conflicts with observation: for the tower contains the nucleon () and the resonance (), split by about 293 MeV, and large- counting says only tower states with become degenerate as . The talk's own conclusion is that the splittings must therefore come from single-pion transitions connecting tower states to non-tower states -- states outside the sequence -- entering the saturated sum rules, rather than from corrections to matrix elements between tower states. Adjacent frameworks address the same spectrum but not this question: the operator expansion of Dashen, Jenkins, and Manohar parameterizes baryon masses by spin-flavor invariants fitted to data, and lattice QCD computes the spectrum numerically from first principles; neither identifies which non-tower states feed which sum rules, or how the degeneracy lemma is lifted.
Problem Statement
Within the current-algebra sum-rule framework of Weinberg's 1994 MIT Chiral Dynamics workshop talk (published in Lecture Notes in Physics 452) -- the Adler-Weisberger commutator relation for the reduced one-pion transition amplitudes at each helicity (with the isospin generators), together with the mass-squared superconvergence relation (with the baryon mass matrix) and the spin-flip superconvergence relation connecting helicities and , all saturated by narrow baryonic states -- the tower of baryons with isospin equal to spin, ( being the number of quark colors), of common parity, is exactly degenerate whenever saturation is by tower states alone with each isospin occurring at most once per helicity. The observed splittings -- for , the nucleon-Delta mass difference of about 293 MeV -- must then arise from single-pion transitions between tower states and non-tower states (baryonic states outside this tower). Determine this mechanism quantitatively: which non-tower states and transitions contribute to which of the sum rules, and at what order in ; how the tower degeneracy is lifted once these contributions are included; and what pattern of tower mass splittings and -scaling the framework then predicts, to be checked against the observed and lattice-QCD baryon spectra. These components jointly support one objective -- a quantitative mechanism-level account of the tower mass splittings within the sum-rule approach. A demonstration that the framework cannot reproduce the observed splittings without dynamical input beyond the algebra, with the obstruction made explicit, would equally resolve the question.
