In work published in 1999-2001, A. A. Abrikosov, Jr. showed that the explicit 't Hooft and Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi multi-instanton solutions of Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory can be rewritten compactly in curvilinear coordinates of flat four-dimensional Euclidean space by a gauge rotation that makes the 't Hooft eta-symbol constant; the price is an additive compensating gauge connection equal to the (anti-)self-dual projection of the spin connection, which is a pure gauge precisely because the flat-space Riemann tensor vanishes. One issue was explicitly left open by the source and remains untreated in the literature: whether the prescription and its compact geometric formulae extend beyond ansatz-based solutions to other topological configurations, paradigmatically the full Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin (ADHM) construction in non-Cartesian frames. Two related facts were derived or demonstrated by the source without being posed as open questions, and they delimit the construction's current domain of validity: its compensating field strength equals , so on curved backgrounds the compensating connection is generally no longer a pure gauge; and the compensating gauge transformation is generally singular, making gauge-variant observables such as the Chern-Simons number dependent on the coordinate chart.
Background
In Euclidean Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(2), an instanton is a finite-action solution of the classical field equations whose field strength is self-dual, , where the dual is . Instantons are interpreted as tunneling events between topologically distinct vacua and are classified by an integer topological charge given by the integral of ; they underlie the QCD -angle and instanton-liquid phenomenology. Belavin, Polyakov, Schwartz and Tyupkin found the unit-charge solution, and explicit multi-instanton families were constructed by 't Hooft and by Jackiw, Nohl and Rebbi (JNR). All of these are expressed in Cartesian coordinates and take the ansatz form , where is a scalar function and are the 't Hooft symbols, constant numerical tensors that project spatial SO(4) rotations onto the SU(2) gauge algebra (they are built from Pauli matrices as for and for ). The general instanton, free of any ansatz, is produced by the Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin (ADHM) construction, an algebraic procedure that encodes the gauge potential in quaternionic matrices subject to linear constraints.
Confinement-inspired models such as bags or strings are most naturally formulated in non-Cartesian frames (spherical or cylindrical coordinates), which motivated Abrikosov's construction. In a curvilinear chart with metric one introduces the vierbein , an orthonormal frame with ; covariant derivatives of frame indices are governed by the spin connection , the gauge field of local frame rotations, itself built from the Levi-Civita connection of the metric. Under the change of variables the constant symbol becomes coordinate-dependent, . Abrikosov proposed to factor out this coordinate dependence by a gauge transformation satisfying
with a constant numerical tensor. The rotated gauge potential is then the sum of the familiar instanton part and a compensating connection
which is computable in three steps from the metric alone (Levi-Civita connection, then spin connection, then convolution with ). The compensating connection is a pure gauge in flat space because its field strength is
which vanishes when the Riemann curvature vanishes; in genuinely curved space-times this is generally no longer so. The construction was verified for the JNR/'t Hooft ansatz in orthogonal curvilinear charts of flat space (O(4)-spherical and 2+2- and 3+1-cylindrical coordinates).
A characteristic side effect is that the compensating connection is generally singular: in O(4)-spherical coordinates its angular components fail to vanish on the polar axes. The singularity is invisible to gauge-invariant observables but not to gauge-variant ones. The standard example is the Chern-Simons number , the surface integral of the Chern-Simons current (the current whose divergence equals the topological charge density), whose change between times measures the vacuum transition mediated by an instanton. In the O(4)-spherical chart the naive radial interpolation of accounts for only , the remaining half of the topological charge being carried by the singular hyperstrips of the compensating field, so gauge-variant quantities depend on the coordinate frame and localize on the singularities of the compensating transformation.
Problem Statement
Determine the domain of validity of the compensating-connection construction of Yang-Mills instantons, and extend it beyond flat-space curvilinear reparametrizations of ansatz-based solutions. The construction - a coordinate-dependent gauge rotation with , whose compensating connection is built from the vierbein and spin connection - has been derived and verified only for 't Hooft/JNR-type self-dual ansätze in orthogonal curvilinear charts of flat four-dimensional Euclidean space. The open question, stated as future work by the source, is whether the same prescription, and the compact geometric formulae it yields, remain valid for - or generalize to - other topological configurations, paradigmatically the full Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin construction written in non-Cartesian frames. The paradigmatic ADHM case fixes the completion target: establishing the prescription and its compact geometric formulae for the full ADHM instanton in non-Cartesian frames is the required demonstration, while the general class of other topological configurations remains the broader scope the source anticipates; the 'domain of validity' is delimited by stating the set of frames and backgrounds on which the construction is shown valid or invalid. Two further facts were derived or demonstrated by the source but not posed there as open questions; they delimit the domain in which the construction is currently known to work: on genuinely curved backgrounds the compensating field strength may be nontrivial, so the compensating connection is generally no longer a pure gauge; and the compensating gauge transformation is generally singular, so gauge-variant observables such as the Chern-Simons number depend on the coordinate chart. Settling the open question would establish a validated geometric technique for writing general instantons in frames adapted to non-trivial geometry.
