In 1986 Gross and Witten determined the leading classical correction of type II string theory to Einstein's equations: a quartic-in-Riemann invariant with coefficient proportional to ζ(3), whose variation changes the dilaton equation to and invalidates generic Ricci-flat solutions while preserving Ricci-flat Kähler (Calabi–Yau-type) backgrounds up to a small deformation. The open core is threefold: (i) the dynamical fate of Ricci-flat non-Kähler compactifications that fail the corrected equations (the obstruction admits no static four-dimensionally Poincaré-invariant solution when , and the subsequent evolution and endpoint are undetermined); (ii) whether higher-curvature corrections prevent or qualitatively modify horizon and singularity formation in gravitational collapse, a dynamical question beyond the stationary perturbative treatments available (Dabholkar; Sen; Moura); and (iii) a closed all-orders understanding of the sigma-model beta functions and the tower of higher-curvature corrections, beyond the order-by-order and duality-constrained results available (Metsaev–Tseytlin; Bershadsky–Cecotti–Ooguri–Vafa; Green–Vanhove; Hohm–Zwiebach; Marques–Nuñez).
Background
String theory replaces point particles by one-dimensional objects whose quantization introduces a fundamental length, encoded in the parameter α′ (the Regge slope, equal to the square of the string length). At distances large compared to the string length, the massless modes of the closed string — the graviton , an antisymmetric two-form , and a scalar dilaton φ — are governed by an effective action that reduces to Einstein's general relativity at leading order and is corrected by higher-derivative terms organized as an expansion in α′ (i.e., in powers of the spacetime curvature relative to the string scale) and in the string coupling. Determining these corrections, and the modified equations of motion they imply for classical solutions, is the problem of string-theoretic modifications of Einstein's equations.
The seminal step was taken by Gross and Witten in 1986 for type II superstrings (the two closed, spacetime-supersymmetric string theories, IIA and IIB, whose bosonic fields include the graviton, two-form, and dilaton). Expanding the tree-level four-graviton scattering amplitude at low energy, they fixed the first purely gravitational correction: a local term quartic in the Riemann curvature tensor, conventionally written — a specific trace contraction of four Riemann tensors, where the tensor arises from saturating worldsheet fermion zero modes — with coefficient proportional to ζ(3), the Riemann zeta value. (The same analysis fixed the leading -type correction for open, type I strings.) Varying the corrected action modifies the classical equations: schematically the dilaton equation becomes ( the spacetime Laplacian), and the Einstein equations acquire curvature-derivative terms. The consequences are stark. A generic Ricci-flat manifold — one with vanishing Ricci tensor , the condition solving the leading-order equations — does not solve the corrected equations, since generically and the functional derivative does not vanish. Ricci-flat Kähler manifolds — complex manifolds of holonomy contained in SU(N), i.e., Calabi–Yau-type spaces, then newly established as candidate internal spaces for compactifications of the form four-dimensional spacetime × internal manifold — do survive: the corrected equations are satisfied after an order- Kähler deformation of the metric, which absorbs the correction.
In the worldsheet formulation, a string background is admissible when the two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model describing string propagation in it is conformally (Weyl) invariant; the deviation from conformal invariance is measured by the sigma-model beta functions, computed as an expansion in loops of the two-dimensional theory, each loop counting a power of curvature. Through three loops, supersymmetric sigma models on Ricci-flat targets have vanishing beta functions. The Gross–Witten result translates into the statement that the sigma model with N=1 worldsheet supersymmetry (a single independent supersymmetry of the two-dimensional theory) on a Ricci-flat target acquires a nonzero beta function at four loops. The heterotic counterpart of the quartic action — the heterotic string being the closed-string theory whose worldsheet combines superstring and bosonic modes, yielding spacetime gauge fields in addition to gravity — was not yet known and was left as future work, together with the fate of the invalidated generic Ricci-flat solutions, the implications for gravitational collapse and black-hole formation, and the all-orders structure of the corrections. The heterotic item is excluded from the open core (refs 2, 7); the remaining items, stated precisely below, define the open problem.
Problem Statement
Consider the type II string effective action including the Gross-Witten order- quartic-curvature correction (with its coefficient proportional to ζ(3)) and the associated corrected field equations, whose dilaton component is . The open problem is the set of unresolved consequences of this correction for classical solutions; it has three parts, posed independently of one another:
-
Dynamical fate of generic Ricci-flat backgrounds. For compactifications of the form four-dimensional spacetime × K where K is Ricci-flat but not Kähler, so that Y does not vanish and typically , no static, four-dimensionally Poincaré-invariant solution of the corrected equations exists. Determine the subsequent classical evolution and its endpoint: does the background evolve toward a new stationary stringy configuration (possibly with nonzero B-field or dilaton gradients), undergo runaway time dependence, or develop another instability? The determination must hold for any precisely specified class of Ricci-flat non-Kähler compactification manifolds for which the treatment is internally consistent and scheme-aware.
-
Gravitational collapse and horizons. Determine whether the higher-curvature corrections that invalidate generic Ricci-flat solutions prevent or qualitatively modify the formation of event horizons and singularities in classical gravitational collapse, relative to the predictions of the two-derivative Einstein equations. This is a dynamical question requiring analysis beyond stationary perturbation theory; existing stationary α′-corrected black hole solutions do not answer it.
-
All-orders structure. Establish a systematic, closed understanding of the sigma-model beta functions and of the complete tower of higher-curvature corrections to the string effective action — a statement valid to all orders in α′, with its assumptions and its field-redefinition scheme made explicit, that subsumes and goes beyond the order-by-order amplitude results, duality constraints, and duality-covariant double-field-theory frameworks currently available — together with the backreaction of that tower on compactification backgrounds.
The heterotic-string analog of the leading quartic action is excluded from the open core as already determined (Gross-Sloan 1987; Bergshoeff-de Roo 1989); heterotic corrections to compactifications lie outside the scope of this problem.
