Beasley and Witten showed that worldsheet instantons in heterotic Calabi–Yau compactifications with only (0,2) worldsheet supersymmetry generate multi-fermion and higher-derivative F-terms, notably a deformation of the complex structure of the four-dimensional moduli space, and they stated five unresolved issues: (i) it is unproven whether the deformation tensor ω represents a non-trivial class in H1(M0,TM0)H^1(\mathcal M_0, T\mathcal M_0), the condition for the deformation to be a genuine global F-term rather than a removable coordinate artifact; (ii) no concrete example exists in which the deformation is globally and explicitly determined; (iii) for rational curves moving in families, it is unknown whether higher-order interactions lift the extra fermion zero modes and thereby generate a superpotential, or whether this is impossible; (iv) the heterotic higher-genus F-term is evaluated only in an abelian (Cartan-subalgebra) simplification, the general non-abelian current correlators being left unevaluated; (v) the coupling of these F-terms to four-dimensional N=1 supergravity is not constructed. None of the five items has been resolved in the literature; the problem remains open.

Background

In perturbative heterotic string compactifications preserving N=1N=1 supersymmetry in four dimensions, one studies a Calabi–Yau threefold XX — a compact complex threefold with trivial canonical bundle, admitting Ricci-flat Kähler metrics — equipped with a stable holomorphic gauge bundle VV (with c2(V)=c2(TX)c_2(V)=c_2(TX) for anomaly cancellation). The generic worldsheet theory of such a compactification has (0,2)(0,2) supersymmetry, meaning two right-moving and no left-moving worldsheet supercharges. A worldsheet instanton is a Euclidean string worldsheet wrapping a holomorphic curve C⊂XC\subset X; it contributes corrections of order e−Area(C)/α′e^{-\mathrm{Area}(C)/\alpha'} to the four-dimensional effective action.

The classic instanton effect is a correction to the superpotential, the holomorphic F-term potential of N=1N=1 supersymmetry. Selection rules restrict it severely: superpotential corrections arise only at string tree level (Dine–Seiberg–Wen–Witten), the wrapped curve must be rational (genus zero), and it must be isolated in XX so that the instanton carries exactly two right-moving fermion zero modes — the minimum needed to furnish the chiral Grassmann measure d2θd^2\theta of an F-term. Each contribution is weighted by a Pfaffian — the square root of the determinant of the antisymmetrized ∂ˉ\bar\partial-operator (the Dolbeault operator of anti-holomorphic differentiation) coupled to VV on the curve — and sums over curves obey strong cancellations: the residue theorem of Beasley–Witten shows that in (0,2)(0,2) linear sigma models (two-dimensional gauge-theory descriptions of the compactification) the contributions of isolated rational curves in a fixed homology class cancel, supporting the expected stability of (0,2)(0,2) vacua (Silverstein–Witten).

Beasley and Witten's 2006 paper initiated the study of a different instanton output. Four-dimensional N=1N=1 effective actions also admit chiral multi-fermion F-terms — terms with several fermions and spacetime derivatives, first systematically described in supersymmetric QCD. A term of the form

δS=∫d4x d2θ  ωijˉ DαΦiDαΦjˉ+c.c.,\delta S=\int d^4x\, d^2\theta\;\omega_{i\bar j}\, D^{\alpha}\Phi^i D_{\alpha}\Phi^{\bar j}+\mathrm{c.c.},

with ∂ˉ\bar\partial-closed ω\omega, describes an infinitesimal deformation of the complex structure of the target-space moduli space: by Kodaira–Spencer theory — the theory of infinitesimal complex-structure deformations — such deformations are classified by H1(M,TM)H^1(\mathcal M, T\mathcal M). Locally on moduli space this F-term can be integrated into a D-term (an integral over the full d4θd^4\theta superspace); only the global non-triviality of the cohomology class makes it a genuine physical effect.

The mechanism found by Beasley–Witten is that curves which fail the superpotential selection rules instead generate these higher F-terms. A curve CC that moves in a holomorphic pp-parameter family in XX, or has genus g≥1g\ge 1, carries extra right-moving fermion zero modes (counted by the holomorphic sections H0(C,N)H^0(C,N) of the normal bundle NN of directions in XX transverse to CC, and by the holomorphic one-forms H0(C,KC)H^0(C,K_C) on CC). These extra modes can be soaked up by higher-order worldsheet interactions coupling the right-moving fermions to left-moving currents — the currents of the affine (Kac–Moody) current algebra realized by the heterotic left-movers — producing a multi-fermion F-term of degree pp (or gg). The central case is a one-parameter family of rational curves with normal bundle N=O⊕O(−2)N=\mathcal O\oplus\mathcal O(-2), which generates precisely the degree-two multi-fermion F-term deforming the complex structure of the moduli space M0\mathcal M_0. Here M0\mathcal M_0 is the α′\alpha'-corrected moduli space: because of the anomalous Green–Schwarz transformation of the BB-field (the antisymmetric two-form gauge field of the string) under Lorentz and gauge transformations, the complexified Kähler moduli fiber non-trivially over the complex-structure and bundle moduli already in worldsheet perturbation theory, so M0\mathcal M_0 is not a product. The computation is organized on a 'universal' space U\mathcal U, a bundle over M0\mathcal M_0 whose fiber is the parameter space of the family, with careful bookkeeping of determinant and Pfaffian line bundles; in a local model with N=2N=2 supersymmetry the deformation tensor takes the compact form ω=(J∘J)(ΨC)\omega=(J\circ J)(\Psi_C), where ΨC\Psi_C is the worldsheet-instanton partition function and JJ a differential operator built from the holomorphic three-form. The same framework reproduces known Type IIA A-model (the topological curve-counting sector of the Type IIA string) instanton F-terms.

Within this framework the authors state what remains unresolved, and these five items — the mathematical genuineness of the deformation, its explicit global realization, its boundary against superpotential generation, its full evaluation beyond the abelian case, and its completion with gravity — constitute the present problem.

Problem Statement

Complete the theory of worldsheet-instanton-generated multi-fermion F-terms in heterotic (0,2)(0,2) Calabi–Yau compactifications, in the five specific directions left open by Beasley–Witten (JHEP 02 (2006) 060):

  1. Cohomological non-triviality. Prove or disprove that the instanton-induced tensor ω\omega generated by a one-parameter family of rational curves represents a non-trivial class in H1(M0,TM0)H^1(\mathcal M_0, T\mathcal M_0) — at least in suitable compact examples — where M0\mathcal M_0 is the α′\alpha'-corrected moduli space. This is the condition for the deformation to be a genuine global F-term rather than an artifact removable by a local coordinate change; the source establishes neither direction.
  2. Explicit global example. Construct a concrete example in which the instanton-induced deformation of M0\mathcal M_0 is globally and explicitly determined (the paper's local N=2N=2 model determines the deformation only locally, via ω=(J∘J)(ΨC)\omega=(J\circ J)(\Psi_C), and cites only orbifold-limit computations of Antoniadis and collaborators in the one-particle-irreducible (1PI) effective action).
  3. Zero-mode lifting and the superpotential. For embedded rational curves that move in holomorphic families in XX, determine whether higher-order interactions of the physical (0,2)(0,2) worldsheet theory can lift the extra fermion zero modes (sections of the normal bundle) so that the instanton generates a superpotential, or prove that this cannot occur. The authors state they were 'unable to see how this can occur or to prove conclusively that it does not'.
  4. Non-abelian higher-genus evaluation. Evaluate the heterotic higher-genus F-term from an isolated genus-gg curve beyond the abelianized case: the correlator of 2g2g non-abelian left-moving currents on the curve, with the short-distance (Schwinger) contact terms fixed by the level-kk current algebra and the normalization by the period matrix of the genus-gg Riemann surface, as it appears in the formal expression (5.17) of the source, of which only the component with all gauge indices in a Cartan subalgebra (the maximal commuting subalgebra of the gauge Lie algebra) and distinct has been evaluated.
  5. Supergravity completion. Extend the analysis to include the coupling of these multi-fermion F-terms to four-dimensional N=1N=1 supergravity, replacing the non-compact local models by which gravity is currently decoupled.

These five open items jointly serve one common objective: to place the newly discovered instanton-induced higher F-terms on the same footing as the classical instanton superpotential — mathematically well-defined (item 1), explicitly realizable (item 2), with a sharp boundary against superpotential generation (item 3), fully evaluated beyond the abelian limit (item 4), and physically complete including gravity (item 5). Items 1–3 concern the degree-two F-term that deforms the moduli space; item 4 concerns the same instanton mechanism for higher genus; item 5 concerns the supersymmetric completion of the resulting effective action.
