In four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) with gauge group SU(NcN_c) and NfN_f flavors, Beasley and Witten (2005) showed that for Nf>NcN_f > N_c a one-instanton generates on the moduli space of vacua a chiral interaction with p=Nf−Nc+1p = N_f - N_c + 1 fermion pairs — a 'multi-fermion F-term' — generalizing the familiar instanton superpotential (Nf=Nc−1N_f = N_c - 1) and the instanton deformation of the moduli-space complex structure (Nf=NcN_f = N_c). Their explicit computations were carried out only for SU(2), and they left three linked questions open, none of which are known to have been answered since: (1) the complete semiclassical one-instanton evaluation, including the full collective-coordinate integrals and normalization, and the explicit chiral-operator formulas for general SU(NcN_c) with Nc>2N_c > 2 and Nf>NcN_f > N_c; (2) a standard mathematical description of the cohomology theory that classifies such F-terms — the anti-chiral supercharge cohomology of sections of the bundle of (0,p)-forms valued in p-fold holomorphic tangent vectors on a Kähler target, modulo the equivalence relation generated by 'three-quarter-superspace' D-terms, and its refinement, in the presence of a superpotential WW, by the differential ∂‾+ιdW\overline{\partial}+\iota_{dW} — the Dolbeault differential plus contraction with the holomorphic one-form dWdW; and (3) a general criterion deciding which N=1 supersymmetric theories admit instanton-generated complex-structure-deforming multi-fermion F-terms. The string-theoretic analog raised in the same paper was resolved positively by the authors' 2006 companion paper and is not part of the open core.

Background

Supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) is the minimal four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory — it has N=1 supersymmetry, generated by one supercharge spinor Q and its conjugate — with gauge group SU(NcN_c) and NfN_f flavors, i.e. NfN_f quark chiral superfields Q and NfN_f anti-quark superfields. A chiral superfield packages a complex scalar, a Weyl fermion, and auxiliary fields; its interactions are constrained by supersymmetry to organize into 'F-terms' (integrals over half of superspace, the Grassmann coordinates θ\theta of the superspace formalism) and 'D-terms' (integrals over all of superspace). F-terms include the superpotential W, a holomorphic function of chiral fields; the classic non-renormalization theorems state that F-terms receive no perturbative corrections beyond one loop, so nonperturbative effects dominate them. An instanton is a finite-action, self-dual solution of the Yang-Mills field equations classified by an integer winding number; its effects in SQCD are computable semiclassically in the Higgs-branch regime (the branch of the vacuum moduli space where squarks have large expectation values and the gauge group is broken), by saturating fermion zero modes — extra fermionic solutions of the Dirac equation in the instanton background whose number controls which supersymmetric correlation functions can be nonzero.

The classical moduli space M of SQCD vacua is parametrized by the gauge-invariant mesons (and baryons when Nf≥NcN_f \geq N_c). The instanton story was long thought complete: for Nf=Nc−1N_f = N_c - 1 the one-instanton generates the Affleck–Dine–Seiberg superpotential proportional to Λ3Nc−Nf/det⁡M\Lambda^{3N_c - N_f}/\det M; for Nf=NcN_f = N_c the instanton quantum-modifies the moduli-space constraint, i.e. deforms the complex structure of M. Beasley and Witten (2005) answered what instantons do for Nf>NcN_f > N_c: on M they generate a chiral operator built from p=Nf−Nc+1p = N_f - N_c + 1 pairs of fermion legs (non-derivative interactions of 2(Nf−Nc)+42(N_f - N_c) + 4 fermions in total, including the two superspace θ\theta's), called a multi-fermion F-term, ∫d4x d2θ Oω\int d^4x\,d^2\theta\,O_\omega. The natural home for these objects is the sigma model on M obtained at a generic vacuum: reducing to two dimensions with N=(2,2) supersymmetry, chiral operators correspond to cohomology classes of polyvector fields (B-model chiral ring). Accordingly, the tensor ω\omega is a section of Ω‾Mp⊗∧pTM\overline{\Omega}^{p}_{\mathcal{M}}\otimes\wedge^{p}T\mathcal{M} — anti-holomorphic p-forms valued in holomorphic p-vector fields on the Kähler manifold M (a complex manifold whose metric is locally derived from a potential, here the moduli space). Chirality of OωO_\omega under the anti-chiral supercharge Q‾\overline{Q} requires the Dolbeault condition ∂‾ ω=0\overline{\partial}\,\omega=0, and OωO_\omega is defined only modulo Q‾\overline{Q}-exact operators generated by integrals over 'three quarters of superspace' (∫d4x d2θ dθˉ\int d^4x\,d^2\theta\,d\bar\theta, one extra Grassmann variable) — an equivalence relation that, because of a required symmetrization over the paired fermion legs, differs from the standard Dolbeault cohomology of polyvector-valued forms. Beasley and Witten noted they knew of no example of an operator expressible over three quarters but not all of superspace. In the presence of a superpotential W on M, the chirality condition becomes δω=0\delta\omega = 0 with δ=∂‾+ιdW\delta=\overline{\partial}+\iota_{dW}, the sum of the Dolbeault differential and the interior product with the holomorphic one-form dW; the cohomology of δ\delta is analogous to Liu's holomorphic equivariant cohomology, but the specific theory for Ω‾Mp⊗∧pTM\overline{\Omega}^{p}_{\mathcal{M}}\otimes\wedge^{p}T\mathcal{M} on an arbitrary Kähler manifold had, in the authors' words, no more standard mathematical description they were aware of.

For SU(2) SQCD the enhanced SU(2Nf2N_f) flavor symmetry fixes the operator OωO_\omega uniquely, and Beasley and Witten verified its generation three ways: a direct one-instanton computation in the Higgs-branch semiclassical regime (the collective coordinates of the instanton are its position, scale size, and gauge orientation, integrated over with the standard measure); a tree-level Feynman diagram in the Seiberg-dual description (Seiberg duality, discovered by Seiberg (1995), maps SU(NcN_c) SQCD with NfN_f flavors to SU(Nf−NcN_f - N_c) SQCD with dual quarks; for Nc=2N_c = 2, Nf=3N_f = 3 the dual gauge group is trivial, giving a Wess–Zumino model, i.e. a theory of chiral fields with a cubic superpotential); and consistency under renormalization-group flow when masses are given to some flavors, reducing to the known Nf=NcN_f = N_c and Nf=Nc−1N_f = N_c - 1 results. For Nc>2N_c > 2 none of these derivations was carried out: the moduli-space geometry is more complicated, the Seiberg dual is interacting, and the instanton collective-coordinate integral is more involved — only the zero-mode counting p=Nf−Nc+1p = N_f - N_c + 1 and the qualitative structure generalize. The same paper suggested that the new viewpoint might give 'a more systematic way to understand ... which N = 1 theories have such a deformation' of the complex structure of their moduli space, but developed no criterion.

Problem Statement

Complete the general theory of instanton-generated multi-fermion F-terms in four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories left open by Beasley–Witten (2005), comprising three linked deliverables that jointly characterize one object — the multi-fermion F-terms on moduli spaces of vacua and their nonperturbative generation:

  1. General SU(NcN_c) SQCD evaluation. Perform the complete semiclassical one-instanton computation for SU(NcN_c) SQCD with Nc>2N_c > 2 and Nf>NcN_f > N_c flavors in the Higgs-branch regime: the fermion zero-mode saturation (with p=Nf−Nc+1p=N_f-N_c+1 fermion pairs absorbed by the chiral operator), the full integration over the instanton collective coordinates (position, scale size, gauge orientation) including the normalization, and thereby the explicit form of the chiral operator OωO_\omega — equivalently of the tensor ω∈Γ(Ω‾Mp⊗∧pTM)\omega\in\Gamma(\overline{\Omega}^{p}_{\mathcal{M}}\otimes\wedge^{p}T\mathcal{M}) — and of the coefficient of the resulting F-term ∫d4x d2θ Oω\int d^4x\,d^2\theta\,O_\omega on the moduli space M\mathcal{M}, for general NcN_c and NfN_f, with verification that it reduces for Nc=2N_c=2 to the Beasley–Witten operator and, under mass deformations, flows to the Nf=NcN_f=N_c quantum-deformed moduli space and the Nf=Nc−1N_f=N_c-1 Affleck–Dine–Seiberg superpotential.

  2. Cohomological classification. Construct the mathematical cohomology theory that classifies multi-fermion F-terms on a general Kähler target M\mathcal{M}: the Q‾\overline{Q}-cohomology of sections of Ω‾Mp⊗∧pTM\overline{\Omega}^{p}_{\mathcal{M}}\otimes\wedge^{p}T\mathcal{M} with chirality condition ∂‾ ω=0\overline{\partial}\,\omega=0, modulo the equivalence relation generated by three-quarter-superspace D-terms (Beasley–Witten eq. (2.34), a symmetrized relation distinct from standard Dolbeault cohomology of polyvector-valued forms), together with its refinement by the differential δ=∂‾+ιdW\delta=\overline{\partial}+\iota_{dW} in the presence of a holomorphic superpotential WW. The deliverable includes precise definitions, well-definedness, computability in examples, and at least basic structure theorems — among them whether operators exist that can be written as integrals over three quarters of superspace but not over all of superspace, for which no example is currently known.

  3. Existence criterion. Formulate and justify a general criterion that decides, for an arbitrary four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric theory, whether instantons (or other nonperturbative effects) generate complex-structure-deforming multi-fermion F-terms on the moduli space of vacua; the criterion must be validated against all established cases — SU(NcN_c) SQCD for all Nf≥Nc−1N_f\ge N_c-1, Sp(N) SQCD, massive deformations thereof, and the known string-theoretic realizations — with a proof or systematic derivation of its necessity and sufficiency within an explicitly stated domain of validity.
