Dabholkar-Putrov-Witten (SciPost Phys. 9, 072 (2020)) derived from the Coulomb-branch path integral of twisted N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super Yang-Mills the mock-modular holomorphic anomaly of Vafa-Witten theory for gauge group SO(3)SO(3) on CP2\mathbb{CP}^2 and sketched a recursive SU(N)/ZNSU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N generalization. The overall normalization constant CC and the orientation sign of the Coulomb-branch integral are still fixed only by matching to the two-dimensional dual or to independently computed generating functions: the major follow-up treatments (Manschot-Moore 2021; Kim-Manschot-Moore-Tao-Zhang 2025) likewise determine their normalizations by comparison with external results, not from the ultraviolet theory. The higher-rank depth N−1N-1 mock-modularity prediction has been confirmed and substantially developed through the S-duality/D-brane route (Alexandrov et al.), but a direct field-theoretic derivation of the general SU(N)/ZNSU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N anomaly formula remains absent; the b2+=0b_2^+=0 and b1≠0b_1\neq0 regimes, the search for mock-modular observables of the B and C twists, and the rigorous G2G_2/Spin(7)Spin(7) geometry underlying the M-theory lift are untreated. The problem posed here is the completion of the first-principles derivation together with these extensions.

Background

Four-dimensional N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory is the maximally supersymmetric gauge theory; its complexified coupling τ\tau (the gauge coupling combined with the theta angle) is acted upon by electric-magnetic duality, and S-duality --- the conjectural equivalence of the theory at τ\tau and at −1/τ-1/\tau, more generally under SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z}) --- predicts that exact protected quantities transform as modular functions of τ\tau. Cumrun Vafa and Edward Witten introduced a topological twist of this theory (Vafa-Witten theory) on a compact four-manifold XX: one supercharge QQ becomes a scalar, the stress tensor becomes QQ-exact (a total QQ-variation, which decouples it from QQ-invariant observables), and the path integral is formally independent of the metric on XX. When a curvature condition holds, the twisted path integral localizes on Yang-Mills instantons (finite-action self-dual solutions of the gauge-field equations), so the partition function is expected to be the generating function Z=∑nanqnZ=\sum_n a_n q^n of the Euler characteristics ana_n of the instanton moduli spaces Mn\mathcal{M}_n, with q=e2πiτq=e^{2\pi i\tau} and the sum over instanton numbers nn in a fixed sector of the discrete 't Hooft flux (for gauge group SO(3)SO(3), fixed second Stiefel-Whitney class w2∈H2(X,Z2)w_2\in H^2(X,\mathbb{Z}_2), the cohomology class obstructing the lift of the SO(3)SO(3) bundle to SU(2)SU(2)). For X=K3X=K3 (a simply-connected compact complex surface with trivial canonical bundle, the standard exactly-solvable case) this series is a holomorphic modular function, as S-duality requires. For X=CP2X=\mathbb{CP}^2 with gauge group SO(3)SO(3) it is not: the holomorphic instanton sum is a mock modular form --- a holomorphic qq-series that fails to transform modularly in a way controlled by another modular form called its shadow, and which becomes modular only after adding a canonical non-holomorphic term. The physical partition function therefore obeys a holomorphic anomaly equation,

∂Z∂τˉ=316πi τ23/2 η(τ)3∑n∈Zqˉ n2,\frac{\partial Z}{\partial\bar\tau}=\frac{3}{16\pi i\,\tau_2^{3/2}\,\eta(\tau)^3}\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}\bar q^{\,n^2},

where η\eta is the Dedekind eta function (the weight-1/21/2 modular form η(τ)=q1/24∏n≥1(1−qn)\eta(\tau)=q^{1/24}\prod_{n\geq1}(1-q^n)), τ2=Im τ\tau_2=\mathrm{Im}\,\tau, and qˉ=e−2πiτˉ\bar q=e^{-2\pi i\bar\tau}: the non-holomorphic right-hand side is the contribution of abelian anti-instantons on the Coulomb branch, arising from the boundary of the integral over the space of zero modes.

This mock modularity was known from mathematical evaluations of the generating functions (for example iterated-integral expressions for their completions, Jan Manschot 2019) and from wall-crossing of D4-D2-D0 BPS indices in string theory (BPS indices are protected counts of supersymmetric bound states, which jump discontinuously across walls of marginal stability in the moduli space; Murad Alim et al 2015), and low-energy integrals over the Coulomb branch --- the locus of the moduli space where the gauge group is spontaneously broken to an abelian group, computed for Donaldson theory (the older N=2\mathcal{N}=2 topological twist of super Yang-Mills) by Gregory Moore and Edward Witten as an integral over the 'u-plane' of the abelian Coulomb-branch coordinate --- were known to produce mock modular objects.

In this setting, Atish Dabholkar, Pavel Putrov and Edward Witten derived the anomaly equation above directly from the path integral of the effective abelian theory on the Coulomb branch, and matched it to an independent two-dimensional computation: by M-theory duality (M-theory being the eleven-dimensional strong-coupling limit of string theory) the twisted theory is related to the elliptic genus --- the supersymmetric index of a two-dimensional theory, computed as a trace over its Hilbert space on a torus --- of a two-dimensional sigma model (a theory of maps from a two-dimensional spacetime into a target space) with noncompact target space, and the same anomaly arises there, both being traceable to a topological term in the six-dimensional (2,0)(2,0) theory (the maximally supersymmetric superconformal theory in six dimensions, realized in M-theory by a stack of M5-branes) on its tensor branch (the vacuum locus where its tensor-multiplet scalar fields take nonzero expectation values). Their Coulomb-branch computation reduces the anomaly to a boundary integral at infinity of the space of bosonic zero modes, with numerical constants aa, bb and an overall constant CC: a=3/πa=3/\pi is fixed by supersymmetrizing a Wess-Zumino term (a coupling defined by integrating a closed differential form over field space, so that its variation is topological) using an off-shell realization --- one in which the supersymmetry algebra closes without using the equations of motion --- of four scalar supercharges, and b=−1b=-1 by imposing the full Spin(6)RSpin(6)_R R-symmetry (the symmetry rotating the supercharges of untwisted N=4\mathcal{N}=4 SYM) via an off-shell realization of eight supercharges. However, CC and an orientation-dependent overall sign are not determined by the four-dimensional computation: the value C=(2π)−2C=(2\pi)^{-2} is obtained only by matching to the expected anomaly, which the two-dimensional torus trace fixes naturally because it is a Hilbert-space trace. The paper explicitly leaves open: (i) a first-principles ultraviolet determination of CC and the sign, with ultraviolet conventions chosen so that the partition function has the holomorphic expansion Z=∑nanqnZ=\sum_n a_n q^n; (ii) a classification of auxiliary terms in the effective action --- arbitrary functions f(∣Φ∣2,H)f(|\Phi|^2,H) of the twisted scalar field Φ\Phi and the self-dual two-form auxiliary (non-propagating) field HH that are annihilated by the scalar supercharges (invariant under their action) --- which can shift the coefficient bb and possibly other subleading coefficients; (iii) a field-theoretic treatment of four-manifolds with b2+=0b_2^+=0 (the number b2+b_2^+ is the dimension of a maximal positive-definite subspace for the intersection form on H2(X,R)H^2(X,\mathbb{R}); it controls wall-crossing and zero-mode counting) or with b1≠0b_1\neq0 (non-simply-connected), where wall-crossing and fermion zero-mode counting differ; (iv) observables of the B and C twists (the other two topological twists of N=4\mathcal{N}=4 SYM, whose two-dimensional reductions have (1,1)(1,1) and (0,1)(0,1) supersymmetry), for which the partition-function anomaly vanishes but other observables might still be mock modular; (v) a complete general derivation of the recursive higher-rank anomaly formula for gauge group SU(N)/ZNSU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N (obtained from SU(N)SU(N) by quotienting its center, so that its instanton sectors carry discrete 't Hooft flux), whose holomorphic limit --- the limit in which the non-holomorphic completion reduces to its holomorphic part --- is predicted to be a mock modular form of depth N−1N-1 (mock modularity iterated N−1N-1 times, with a chain of shadows); and (vi) a rigorous analysis of the G2G_2 and Spin(7)Spin(7) structures --- exceptional-holonomy geometries in seven and eight dimensions --- on the total spaces Ω2+(X)\Omega_2^+(X) of self-dual two-forms and S+(X)S^+(X) of positive-chirality spinors, which implement the twist geometrically in the M-theory construction and were used only informally.

Problem Statement

The problem is to complete, from first principles in the ultraviolet four-dimensional theory, the derivation of the mock-modular holomorphic anomaly of Vafa-Witten theory (topologically twisted N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super Yang-Mills), and to extend the anomaly analysis to the regimes that Dabholkar, Putrov and Witten left untreated. The requested results, which jointly amount to a self-contained four-dimensional account of mock modularity in twisted N=4\mathcal{N}=4 SYM, are:

(1) Ultraviolet normalization and sign. Derive the absolute normalization constant CC of the Coulomb-branch path integral --- equivalently, of the holomorphic anomaly equation for the twisted SO(3)SO(3) theory on CP2\mathbb{CP}^2 --- and the orientation-dependent overall sign of the fermion zero-mode integral, directly from the ultraviolet four-dimensional theory, with ultraviolet conventions fixed so that the partition function takes the holomorphic instanton expansion Z=∑nanqnZ=\sum_n a_n q^n (Euler-characteristic generating function), tracking every source of normalization: path-integral measure, and contact terms (topological terms proportional to the Euler characteristic and the signature of XX) generated when massive modes are integrated out. The derivation must be self-contained: the value C=(2π)−2C=(2\pi)^{-2}, previously obtained only by matching to the two-dimensional torus trace, should emerge as an output, with the two-dimensional match serving only as a check.

(2) Auxiliary-term classification. Classify all terms in the effective action on the Coulomb branch that are invariant under the scalar supercharges used in the localization (the analogue of the f(∣Φ∣2,H)f(|\Phi|^2,H) terms annihilated by all four scalar supercharges in the source), determine which of them are compatible with the full Spin(6)RSpin(6)_R R-symmetry, and determine their effect on the coefficients of the anomaly equation, including possible shifts of the constant bb and of subleading coefficients.

(3) Other topologies. Extend the field-theoretic Coulomb-branch anomaly analysis to four-manifolds with b2+=0b_2^+=0 or b1≠0b_1\neq0, where wall-crossing and fermion zero-mode counting differ from the treated case b2+=1b_2^+=1, b1=0b_1=0; determine the analogue of the holomorphic anomaly equation in these regimes or show that no anomaly of this type arises.

(4) Other twists and observables. For the B and C twists, for which the partition-function holomorphic anomaly vanishes, identify observables (if any) with nonvanishing holomorphic anomaly exhibiting mock modularity, and compute their anomalies.

(5) Higher rank. Derive from the field theory the recursive holomorphic anomaly equation for gauge group SU(N)/ZNSU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_N on CP2\mathbb{CP}^2 in complete generality --- all decompositions N=N1+N2N=N_1+N_2 and all compatible discrete flux sectors --- establishing that the holomorphic limit is a mock modular form of depth N−1N-1.

(6) Geometric underpinning. Give a rigorous geometric treatment of the G2G_2/Spin(7)Spin(7) structures (possibly non-integrable) on Ω2+(X)\Omega_2^+(X) and S+(X)S^+(X) used in the M-theory lift, sufficient for the topological applications invoked in the source.

Items (1)-(2) complete the source derivation for the base case; items (3)-(5) extend the same anomaly analysis to the regimes the source treated only in outline; item (6) secures the geometric input on which the two-dimensional dual description rests. The items are linked by the single objective of making the mock modularity of twisted N=4\mathcal{N}=4 SYM a derived, rather than partially matched, consequence of the four-dimensional theory. All six items are jointly mandatory. Item (5) contains the base case of item (1) at N=2N=2 (SU(2)/Z2=SO(3)SU(2)/\mathbb{Z}_2=SO(3) on CP2\mathbb{CP}^2), but deriving item (5) does not discharge item (1), whose self-contained ultraviolet determination of the constant CC and of the orientation sign is required in its own right.
