Adamovich, Brooks, Tamayo, Alexander, Djurovich, D'Andrade, Adachi, Forrest and Thompson (New J. Chem. 26, 1171, 2002) showed that a single phosphorescent dopant - a platinum(II) [2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato-N,C2'] beta-diketonate of the FPt class - can generate white electrophosphorescence in an organic light-emitting diode by emitting simultaneously from blue monomer and orange aggregate (excimer) states, with an electron/exciton-blocking layer confining charge and excitons in a thin doped emissive layer. The report left open whether such single-dopant white OLEDs keep their white point over a full operational lifetime, how the monomer-to-aggregate emission balance evolves under long-term electrical stress, and how generally the confinement strategy transfers to other, especially blue or higher-energy, electrophosphorescent systems. The subsequent literature extended the concept widely - p-i-n confinement architectures, new hosts, tridentate and tetradentate Pt(II) emitters, Cu4I4 cluster dopants - with efficiencies above 20%, but the reported direct operational-lifetime data for single-doped excimer white devices (LT80 of roughly 200-400 h at 1000 cd m^-2, 2014) remain orders of magnitude short of solid-state-lighting targets, and no study yet provides a mechanism-level account of white-point drift under aging. The open core is long-lived, color-stable single-dopant white electrophosphorescent devices and the generalization of the confinement architecture to higher-energy dopants.
Background
An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is a thin-film device in which electrons and holes recombine in an organic emissive layer to form excitons (bound electron-hole pairs). Because of spin statistics, three quarters of electrically generated excitons are triplets, which decay non-radiatively in conventional fluorescent emitters; electrophosphorescence harvests them by using heavy-metal complexes (Ir(III), Pt(II)) whose strong spin-orbit coupling makes triplet emission (phosphorescence) efficient. A white OLED (WOLED) combines blue, green and red emission to produce illumination-quality white light, quantified by CIE chromaticity coordinates and the color rendering index (CRI, a 0-100 measure of how faithfully a light source renders object colors); external quantum efficiency (EQE) is the fraction of injected charge emitted as usable light. In the state of the art before 2002, white electrophosphorescent devices required several dopants and emissive layers, which makes the emission color sensitive to driving voltage and to the spatial drift of the recombination zone, complicates fabrication, and degrades color reproducibility. A monomer is an isolated emitter molecule, whose phosphorescence spectrum is structured and set by the molecular triplet state; an excimer (excited dimer) or aggregate state arises when an excited molecule interacts with a ground-state neighbor, here of the same square-planar Pt(II) dopant, giving a broad, red-shifted, featureless emission whose strength grows with dopant concentration and intermolecular contact. Adamovich et al. (2002) doped Pt(II) [2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinato-N,C2'] beta-diketonates (the FPt class, all showing identical dilute-solution blue monomer emission at about 468, 500 and 540 nm) into wide-triplet-gap hosts - CBP (N,N'-dicarbazolyl-4,4'-biphenyl) and mCP (N,N'-dicarbazolyl-3,5-benzene) - and obtained broadband white emission from the superposition of monomer and broad orange aggregate emission near 580 nm, with the monomer-to-aggregate ratio controllable through doping concentration, steric bulk of the beta-diketonate ligand, and host choice. To confine charge and excitons they inserted an electron/exciton blocking layer (EBL) of fac-tris(1-phenylpyrazolato-N,C2')iridium(III) (Irppz) between the hole-transporting NPD layer and the doped emissive layer, which prevents electrons and excitons from leaking into NPD; the best device reached 6.4% EQE (12.2 lm W^-1) at 1 cd m^-2 with CIE (0.36, 0.44) and CRI 67, holding CIE and CRI unchanged from 1 to 500 cd m^-2. The simplification offered by this single-dopant architecture - one emitter, one doped layer, no differential aging of separate color dopants - is exactly what makes its long-term behavior the decisive open issue: the white point is set by a ratio between two emission channels of the same molecule that depends on dopant aggregation and host morphology, both of which can change as the device degrades under electrical stress.
Problem Statement
Can the single-dopant white electrophosphorescent OLED architecture introduced by Adamovich et al. (2002) - one Pt(II) beta-diketonate phosphor in a wide-gap host, emitting white light from the superposition of blue monomer and orange aggregate (excimer) phosphorescence, with an electron/exciton-blocking layer confining charge and excitons in the doped emissive layer - remain color-stable over its full operational lifetime? The question, left open by the source report and still standing in the later literature, decomposes into three parts, whose common objective is to establish single-dopant white electrophosphorescence as a long-lived, color-stable and generalizable OLED architecture: (1) demonstrate and characterize the operational lifetime and white-point (CIE) stability of monomer-plus-aggregate single-dopant white electrophosphorescent devices under continuous electrical stress at illumination-relevant luminance, quantified as an LT80 (time to 80% of initial luminance) at 1000 cd m^-2 with the white point held within the color-maintenance tolerance conventionally required of white light sources (a Delta-u'v' shift of at most 0.007 on the CIE 1976 (u', v') diagram) over that period, i.e. at or extrapolatable to the order of tens of thousands of hours rather than the few hundred hours so far achieved; (2) determine how the balance between monomer and aggregate emission evolves under such long-term stress - whether dopant aggregation, host morphology, recombination-zone drift, or chemical degradation of dopant, host or blocking layer dominates the spectral drift - and identify the design rules (dopant steric bulk, host choice, blocking layer, doping concentration) that keep the white point fixed; and (3) establish how generally the exciton/charge-confinement strategy extends to other blue or higher-energy electrophosphorescent systems beyond the FPt parent and other material systems (different emitter classes, hosts, and deposition methods, illustrative axes of variation rather than a set that must all be covered) while preserving efficiency and white-point stability, given that higher triplet energies make charge and exciton leakage and degradation more severe.
