In algebraic quantum field theory, the timelike tube theorem states that the von Neumann algebra of observables localized in an open spacetime region equals the algebra of the larger region obtained by deforming timelike curves in with fixed endpoints, so localization is only meaningful up to such timelike envelopes. Strohmaier and Witten (2024) proved the theorem for free fields in a class of 'analytic states' on real-analytic globally hyperbolic spacetimes, combining a geometric homotopy argument with a microlocal spectrum condition formulated through the FBI transform, and their introduction states that whether the theorem holds for even the free Klein-Gordon field on a general, not necessarily analytic, globally hyperbolic spacetime 'remains an open question'. The obstruction is purely PDE-theoretic: unique continuation across a non-characteristic timelike hypersurface for the operator is known only under (partial) analyticity of the metric (Holmgren-type arguments; Tataru, Robbiano-Zuily, Hörmander; applied to the field algebra by Strohmaier 2000), while for smooth complex lower-order terms it is outright false (Alinhac-Baouendi 1995); the case of smooth real coefficients is an explicitly recognized open problem as of 2026 (Le Rousseau-Rauch). The problem posed here: decide, by proof or counterexample, whether timelike unique continuation holds for the Klein-Gordon operator with smooth real coefficients on smooth globally hyperbolic spacetimes, and hence whether the timelike tube theorem extends beyond the analytic category; determine whether analyticity can at least be weakened to a quasianalytic Denjoy-Carleman class, as the source conjectures; and verify the source's Assumption 4.8 on the causal propagator for spacetimes beyond Minkowski, which currently blocks the theorem's application to the free field on general analytic backgrounds.
Background
Algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT) describes a quantum field theory by a net of local algebras: to each open spacetime region one assigns a von Neumann algebra (an algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space, closed under weak operator limits) representing the observables measurable in , with the assignment compatible with containment and causal structure. A foundational phenomenon in this framework is that localization can be diluted in time: the timelike tube theorem, proved for Wightman fields (operator-valued distributions on Minkowski spacetime whose vacuum correlation functions satisfy the standard Wightman axioms) by Borchers (1961), states that , where is a region obtained from by deforming timelike curves in a timelike manner with fixed endpoints (iterated over all such deformations this produces the timelike envelope, a typically much larger region). Physically, only regions that are their own timelike envelopes need be considered in a local net; mathematically the equality is nontrivial because it converts a hyperbolic propagation statement into an equality of abstract operator algebras. On curved spacetimes the free scalar (Klein-Gordon) field is governed by the operator (, the d'Alembertian of the metric ) on a globally hyperbolic spacetime, meaning one possessing a Cauchy hypersurface (a hypersurface met exactly once by every inextendible timelike curve), which guarantees well-posedness of the Cauchy problem. The algebraic framework is anchored in Hadamard states: quasi-free states (states of a free field specified entirely by their two-point function, as for a Gaussian field) whose two-point functions share the local singularity structure of the Poincaré vacuum, which is the condition selecting physically admissible states. Radzikowski (1996) characterized the Hadamard condition microlocally through the wavefront set (the set of cotangent directions along which a distribution fails to be smooth), and Brunetti-Fredenhagen-Köhler (1996) generalized this to a microlocal spectrum condition on all -point functions. Strohmaier-Verch-Wollenberg (2002) introduced the stronger analytic microlocal spectrum condition, replacing by the analytic wavefront set (which measures failure of real analyticity), and proved that it implies the Reeh-Schlieder property (density of in the Hilbert space for every non-empty open ) on real-analytic globally hyperbolic spacetimes. Strohmaier and Witten (2024) substantially extended this circle of ideas. They define analytic states - roughly, states from which energy cannot be asymptotically extracted, made precise by requiring that smeared field products with test-function families whose semiclassical microsupports avoid the positive-energy configuration annihilate the state vector up to exponentially small errors - where the semiclassical microsupport of a family is the complement of the phase-space region in which the family decays by , a notion detected by the FBI transform (a phase-space transform localizing simultaneously in position and frequency direction). For free fields in analytic states on real-analytic globally hyperbolic spacetimes they prove both the Reeh-Schlieder theorem and the timelike tube theorem. The analytic input making this work is their Assumption 4.8, a set of four conditions on the causal propagator of (the difference of retarded and advanced fundamental solutions); its condition (4) requires that map a space of FBI-localized analytic test families to families with microsupport in the zero section of the cotangent bundle, a form of uniform analyticity of the Green function as one argument goes to timelike infinity. They verify Assumption 4.8 only for the free Klein-Gordon field on Minkowski spacetime. The same introduction conjectures that the whole analysis survives replacing real-analytic functions by a quasianalytic Denjoy-Carleman class - a scale of regularity between real-analytic and , defined by growth bounds on derivatives, whose quasianalytic members still force every function of the class to be determined by its Taylor series at each point. The entire analytic apparatus rests on one PDE fact: unique continuation - the principle that a solution of a linear equation vanishing on an open set vanishes on a larger geometrically determined set - holds across arbitrary non-characteristic hypersurfaces (hypersurfaces whose conormal directions do not lie in the characteristic set of the operator's principal symbol, i.e. hypersurfaces transverse to the propagation cones) for operators with analytic coefficients by Holmgren's theorem, but in the category Hörmander's Carleman-based theorem requires strong pseudoconvexity of the interface, a condition that necessarily fails at timelike hypersurfaces of wave operators because the Hamilton flow of the principal symbol is tangent there. The one known bridge is partial analyticity: Tataru (1995; 1999), Robbiano-Zuily (1998) and Hörmander (1997) proved unique continuation across arbitrary non-characteristic surfaces for wave-type operators whose coefficients are analytic in the time variable (using nonlocal Carleman weights that analytically regularize in time), and Strohmaier (2000) applied this to show that on spacetimes whose metric is locally analytic in a time direction the Klein-Gordon field algebra satisfies for a suitable envelope . On the negative side, Alinhac and Baouendi (1995) constructed in -dimensional Minkowski space a smooth complex-valued potential and a nontrivial smooth solution of the wave equation supported in a half-space bounded by a timelike plane, so unique continuation at timelike hypersurfaces is simply false for complex lower-order coefficients. Whether the metric wave operator, or a wave operator with a smooth real potential, admits such counterexamples is unknown - this is the crux of the present problem. Recent work sharpens the landscape: Guisset and Shao (2024) extended the counterexample construction to real but critically singular (inverse-square-type) potentials at hypersurfaces with trapped null geodesics, with applications to conformal boundaries of anti-de Sitter spacetime (the maximally symmetric solution of Einstein's equations with negative cosmological constant); Le Rousseau and Rauch (2026) developed the geometry of timelike homotopies and domains of determinacy (the regions in which a solution is uniquely determined by its values on a given subset) for smooth strictly hyperbolic operators (second-order wave-type operators whose principal symbol has two distinct real roots), proved that the reachability structure used in envelope arguments is correct under minimal smoothness, and state that uniqueness at non-characteristic non-spacelike hypersurfaces for smooth real coefficients is 'a challenging open problem'; and the lecture notes of Laurent and Léautaud (2023) organize the unique-continuation literature around exactly this gap.
Problem Statement
Decide whether the timelike tube theorem survives the removal of real analyticity, by proof or counterexample, with two linked sub-objectives. (1) Core question. Let be a smooth globally hyperbolic spacetime whose metric is merely (not assumed real-analytic in any variable), let with , and let be the causal propagator of . Either (a) prove that for every open and every smooth solution of that vanishes on , vanishes on the timelike envelope of (equivalently, prove local unique continuation across every non-characteristic non-spacelike hypersurface for the metric wave operator with smooth real lower-order terms), and derive the equality of von Neumann algebras for the free Klein-Gordon field in suitable (Hadamard or analytic) states on such spacetimes; or (b) disprove it by constructing a smooth real-coefficient example: a smooth globally hyperbolic metric (or the metric wave operator plus a smooth real potential), a non-characteristic non-spacelike hypersurface, and a nontrivial smooth solution supported on one side of that hypersurface, thereby establishing failure of the timelike tube theorem for the free field in the smooth category. (2) Intermediate regularity. Independent of (1), determine the weakest regularity for which timelike unique continuation for holds: in particular, prove or refute the source's conjecture that the entire Strohmaier-Witten argument - both the geometric homotopy/envelope part and the microlocal spectrum condition - remains valid when the class of real-analytic functions is replaced by a quasianalytic Denjoy-Carleman class. (3) Applicability to the free field on curved analytic backgrounds. On real-analytic globally hyperbolic spacetimes, verify or refute Assumption 4.8 of the source - notably condition (4), that maps the space of FBI-localized analytic test families to families whose microsupport is contained in the zero section, i.e. a uniform analyticity of the causal propagator as one argument tends to timelike infinity - for classes of spacetimes beyond Minkowski space, so that the timelike tube theorem for the free Klein-Gordon field becomes applicable beyond flat space. Scope note: the source's further remark that the precise form of the analytic microlocal spectrum condition is 'perhaps still not final' is an open-ended program statement without a sharp completion boundary; it is context for this problem, not part of its completion criterion.
The problem comprises three parts: the core dichotomy (1), the intermediate-regularity question (2) and the Assumption 4.8 verification (3), the latter two being independent sub-objectives linked to the core question. Proving or disproving (1) settles the smooth-category timelike tube theorem but leaves (2) and (3) open.
