Witten's 1996 analysis of non-perturbative superpotentials in M-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau four-fold reduced the amplitude of an M5-brane instanton wrapped on a rigid divisor with arithmetic genus to a classical factor times a holomorphic one-loop determinant of the M5 world-volume theory, but left uncomputed, noting only that it should involve something similar to Ray-Singer analytic torsion and that its determination is obstructed by the chiral two-form (a two-form whose field strength is self-dual) propagating on the M5 world-volume. The subsequent literature supplies the general framework for self-dual-field partition functions (sections of line bundles over the intermediate Jacobian of the wrapped six-manifold), exact prefactors in special dual corners (an theta-function superpotential, spectral-cover determinant computations, gaugino-condensation Pfaffians, weak-coupling Sen-limit period analyses), and the solved lower-dimensional /membrane analogue. A general closed-form identification of as a torsion-type invariant of the divisor remains open; a derivation of the instanton measure from the full non-linear M5-brane action, which would put the underlying symmetry analysis on rigorous footing, remains a subsidiary rigor goal rather than a separate requirement for resolving it.
Background
M-theory, the eleven-dimensional completion of string theory, compactified on a Calabi-Yau four-fold (an eight-real-dimensional complex manifold with holonomy , so that its canonical bundle is trivial) yields a three-dimensional theory with supersymmetry (four supercharges), structurally analogous to supersymmetry in four dimensions. Its superpotential, the holomorphic function of chiral scalar fields that encodes F-term dynamics, receives no perturbative contributions: terms independent of the Kahler class are excluded by scaling up the metric of , since eleven-dimensional supergravity on is then an exact solution. Witten (1996) showed that the only source of a superpotential is instantons: the M5-brane, the six-dimensional soliton of M-theory whose world-volume carries a chiral two-form with self-dual three-form field strength (a form with no conventional action), wrapped on a complex divisor in , i.e. a complex-codimension-one submanifold.
Two facts put the instanton amplitude under control. First, holomorphy fixes the Kahler-class dependence: the amplitude is a classical factor , with the volume of and a scalar dual to the reduction of the M-theory three-form , times a one-loop determinant of world-volume fields; higher-loop corrections would carry inverse powers of the Kahler class and are excluded. Second, a symmetry argument selects the contributing divisors. Fermion zero modes on the wrapped brane are counted by the cohomology of the structure sheaf (the sheaf of holomorphic functions on ); writing , their total violation of an rotation of the normal bundle of in equals the arithmetic genus
Matching this against the charge of the superspace measure shows that a superpotential term can be generated only if , and it is guaranteed when (such a divisor is called rigid: it admits no infinitesimal complex deformations), in which case the generated term is
where is a holomorphic function of the remaining moduli (notably the complex-structure moduli of ) coming from the determinant over the non-zero modes.
The charge bookkeeping relies on a classical anomaly of the factor , ultimately tied to the term in the low-energy expansion of M-theory, which cancels the world-volume one-loop anomaly; and it assumes that is an exact symmetry of the full five-brane action, an assumption Witten could only motivate, not prove, because the non-linear M5-brane action was not known at the time.
The open gap is itself. For world-volume theories built from ordinary fields, determinants of the Dolbeault complex assemble into the Ray-Singer analytic torsion, the alternating product of regularized determinants of Laplacians acting on -forms, and its holomorphic variant is a holomorphic function on the complex-structure moduli space. Witten remarked that the present determinant presumably involves something similar, but that the identification is obstructed because the world-volume theory on is exotic: it contains the chiral two-form with self-dual field strength, for which no ordinary Gaussian determinant exists. His follow-up paper, Five-Brane Effective Action in M-Theory (1997), established the general framework: the partition function of a self-dual field on a six-manifold is not a function but a section of a holomorphic line bundle over the intermediate Jacobian , the torus parametrizing flat holonomies of the M-theory three-form , so a scalar torsion cannot be the whole answer whenever .
The problem sits in a web of dualities that supply checkable corners. When is elliptically fibered (admitting a holomorphic map whose generic fiber is an elliptic curve, i.e. a one-dimensional complex torus), M-theory on is related, in the limit of small fiber, to type IIB string theory on the base three-fold (F-theory, the description of type IIB vacua with varying axio-dilaton, the complex combination of the axion and dilaton scalar fields, via elliptic fibrations): the M5 instanton wrapping maps to an instantonic D3-brane (a three-dimensional Dirichlet membrane of type IIB string theory) wrapped on a divisor . When is moreover fibered in rational curves, the same superpotential is describable in the heterotic string on a Calabi-Yau three-fold, where instanton terms map to space-time instantons (including gaugino condensation, a superpotential generated non-perturbatively by strong gauge dynamics) and to world-sheet instantons whose Pfaffian prefactors (determinant-like fermionic amplitudes) can sometimes be computed independently. These corners constrain, but do not determine, the general answer.
Problem Statement
Determine the one-loop determinant of the M5-brane instanton, i.e. the holomorphic prefactor multiplying in the superpotential generated by an M5-brane wrapped on a rigid divisor with in M-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau four-fold , as a function of the complex-structure moduli of restricted to , and identify its mathematical nature, conjecturally an analogue of the holomorphic Ray-Singer torsion adapted to the chiral two-form of the M5 world-volume theory.
The problem decomposes into the following components: (a) give an explicit, or rigorously characterized, expression for , including its holomorphy properties, its non-vanishing structure in the smooth rigid-divisor case, and, when , its realization as a section of the determinant line bundle over the intermediate Jacobian of , with the transformation law under the rotation of the normal bundle fixed by the world-volume anomaly and its cancellation against the classical contribution; (b) establish, from the full non-linear M5-brane action, that is an exact symmetry of the instanton world-volume theory, or else exhibit a -violating coupling of that action and prove that it does not affect the superpotential; and (c) validate the result against the exactly-computable corners, namely the theta-function superpotential (the exact result of Donagi, Grassi and Witten for an F-theory model whose gauge symmetry is the exceptional Lie group ), heterotic-dual world-sheet-instanton Pfaffians, gaugino-condensation one-loop Pfaffians, and mirror-symmetry/period computations in special limits.
Resolution of this problem requires part (a), whose -transformation law may cite rather than re-derive the exactness of ; parts (b) and (c) are separately reported sub-goals rather than additional completion requirements, with (b) the subsidiary rigor condition on the -symmetry used in the selection rule and (c) validation of the result against the named corners.
The separate programmatic questions raised alongside this one in the source, namely a complete classification of Calabi-Yau four-folds admitting divisors with , the fractionization scenario, and the general effect of background -flux on the survival of superpotential terms, are adjacent directions with substantial independent progress of their own and are not part of this problem's completion boundary.
