Fradkin, Nayak, Tsvelik and Wilczek (1998) constructed the effective field theory of the Moore-Read Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall state as an SU(2)SU(2) Chern-Simons theory at level k=2k=2, obtained from the edge conformal field theory and extended to the fermionic ν=1/2\nu=1/2 state by flux attachment, but they explicitly left open the electron-side member of the pair: a dynamical Landau-Ginzburg theory whose fundamental fields are the paired spin-triplet, pp-wave order parameters, and a controlled derivation of its duality to the quasiparticle-fundamental Chern-Simons theory, in the spirit of the Zhang-Hansson-Kivelson construction for Laughlin states. Subsequent work constructed Landau-Ginzburg theories for the bosonic ν=1\nu=1 Pfaffian via a Meissner projection (Fradkin, Nayak and Schoutens 1999, who stated the fermionic extension to be open), established the Bogoliubov-de Gennes pairing dictionary of the weak-pairing phase (Read and Green 2000), and produced Landau-Ginzburg-type descriptions of non-Abelian states from the conjectured 2+1-dimensional duality web (Goldman, Sohal and Fradkin 2019, 2020) and effective U(2)U(2) Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau hierarchies (Lee, Cho and Seo 2026). None of these constitutes a controlled derivation of the Pfaffian Chern-Simons theory with properly quantized flux attachment from a dynamical pp-wave paired order-parameter theory covering the fermionic ν=1/2\nu=1/2 state; Goldman, Sohal and Fradkin (2020) state explicitly that their fermionic framework does not reach the Pfaffian. The problem therefore remains open.

Background

In the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect, a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong perpendicular magnetic field forms incompressible liquid states (gapped phases whose density cannot be changed without a finite energy cost) with Hall conductance quantized at fractional multiples of e2/he^2/h. The Laughlin states at filling fraction ν=1/(2k+1)\nu=1/(2k+1) admit a canonical effective description on two dual levels. On one level stands a Landau-Ginzburg theory: a fluctuating bosonic order-parameter field (electrons with statistical flux bound to them by a dynamical gauge field, a transformation called flux attachment) whose vortices are the fractionally charged quasiparticles. On the other stands a Chern-Simons (CS) theory of that gauge field: a topological field theory in 2+12+1 dimensions whose action is first order in derivatives and whose coupling constant (the level kk) must be quantized to an integer for the theory to be invariant under large gauge transformations on closed manifolds. Zhang, Hansson and Kivelson showed for the Laughlin states that the two descriptions are equivalent: dualizing (integrating out) the order-parameter field maps the Landau-Ginzburg theory onto the CS theory, so that the topological data of the phase follow from electron-side variables.

The Moore-Read Pfaffian state is the prototypical non-Abelian generalization. Its trial wavefunction at ν=1/2\nu=1/2 multiplies a Jastrow factor ∏i<j(zi−zj)2\prod_{i<j}(z_i-z_j)^2 (each power of the pairwise factor binds one quantum of magnetic flux to every electron, producing composite fermions, i.e. electrons dressed with an even number of attached flux quanta that see on average zero net magnetic field) by the Pfaffian (antisymmetrized product over pairs) of 1/(zi−zj)1/(z_i-z_j), i.e. by the pairing wavefunction of a chiral px+ipyp_x+ip_y superconductor of those composite fermions. Its quasiholes carry charge e/4e/4, and 2n2n quasiholes span a 2n−12^{n-1}-dimensional space of fusion states; physically this reflects the occupation of nn Majorana zero modes (zero-energy, self-conjugate fermion modes) bound to vortices, as described by a Bogoliubov-de Gennes treatment (the mean-field framework for paired fermions with spatially varying order parameter) of pp-wave pairing. Exchanging quasiholes acts as a matrix within this degenerate space rather than as a mere phase: this is non-Abelian statistics. On a torus the Pfaffian state at filling ν=1/q\nu=1/q (with qq odd for bosons and even for fermions) has ground-state degeneracy 3q3q.

Fradkin, Nayak, Tsvelik and Wilczek (1998) supplied the quasiparticle-side effective theory of this universality class. Observing that the edge theory of the bosonic Pfaffian state at ν=1\nu=1 is the SU(2)2SU(2)_2 Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory (a chiral theory with an affine SU(2)SU(2) current, or Kac-Moody, algebra at level 2), they identified the bulk theory as SU(2)SU(2) Chern-Simons theory at level k=2k=2,

S=24π∫d3x ϵμνλ(aμa∂νaλa+13fabcaμaaνbaλc),S = \frac{2}{4\pi}\int d^3x\, \epsilon^{\mu\nu\lambda}\left(a^a_\mu \partial_\nu a^a_\lambda + \frac{1}{3}f^{abc}a^a_\mu a^b_\nu a^c_\lambda\right),

where aμaa^a_\mu is an SU(2)SU(2) gauge field. The fermionic ν=1/2\nu=1/2 Pfaffian follows by flux attachment, i.e. by coupling a U(1)U(1) gauge field to the charge current with properly quantized CS terms. In this framework quasiparticle braiding is encoded in Wilson loop expectation values (traces of the gauge transporter around closed loops), which in SU(2)2SU(2)_2 CS theory equal the Jones polynomial (a topological invariant of knots and links) evaluated at the specialized parameter eπi/4e^{\pi i/4}; the theory reproduces the torus degeneracy, quasihole counting, and braiding eigenvalues of the wavefunction constructions. The paper also noted that a two-point-contact quantum Hall interferometer would measure exactly these Wilson-loop amplitudes, and (its Appendix) reformulated flux attachment so that the U(1)U(1) CS level stays properly quantized on closed manifolds.

What the 1998 paper explicitly lacked was the electron-side member of the Laughlin/Zhang-Hansson-Kivelson pair. It states plainly that it does not know the correct Landau-Ginzburg theory for the Pfaffian state. It did show that the gauge-invariant completion of the flux-attachment term requires a charged scalar field Δ0\Delta_0 and an SU(2)SU(2)-adjoint scalar triplet Δa\Delta_a, precisely the structure of a spin-triplet, pp-wave paired condensate, and it anticipated that the duality between a Landau-Ginzburg theory in which the electrons are the fundamental objects and the dual Chern-Simons theory in which the quasiparticles are fundamental is a highly non-trivial transformation relating two radically different-looking theories. Establishing this duality in a controlled way, including the flux-attachment step for the physically relevant fermionic state, is the unresolved target.

Problem Statement

Construct an explicit, fully dynamical Landau-Ginzburg theory of the Pfaffian quantum Hall state in 2+12+1 dimensions in which the paired spin-triplet px+ipyp_x+ip_y order parameter fields (a charged scalar Δ0\Delta_0 and an SU(2)SU(2)-adjoint triplet Δa\Delta_a, or an equivalent charged-plus-neutral pairing order-parameter content) are the fundamental variables, including the neutral Bogoliubov-de Gennes fermion sector whose vortices bind Majorana zero modes and realize the 2n−12^{n-1}-dimensional multi-quasihole fusion space; and derive from it, in a controlled way, the dual effective field theory of Fradkin-Nayak-Tsvelik-Wilczek, namely SU(2)SU(2) Chern-Simons theory at level k=2k=2 for the bosonic state at ν=1\nu=1, together with the flux-attachment extension that yields the fermionic Pfaffian state at ν=1/2\nu=1/2 (and its generalizations at other even-denominator fillings ν=1/q\nu=1/q with qq even), with flux attachment implemented so that all Chern-Simons levels remain correctly quantized under large gauge transformations on closed manifolds.

Controlled means that the derivation identifies a limit, a small parameter, or an exact identity under which the duality holds, in the spirit of the Zhang-Hansson-Kivelson equivalence between the Laughlin Landau-Ginzburg theory and its dual Chern-Simons theory, rather than postulating both descriptions and matching their topological data.

The target, on the Landau-Ginzburg side, is to jointly establish:

  1. The paired order-parameter theory has an incompressible, gapped phase at the relevant filling fractions with the symmetries and electromagnetic response of the Pfaffian state (Hall conductance σxy=νe2/h\sigma_{xy}=\nu e^2/h).

  2. Dualizing or integrating out the order-parameter fields yields the SU(2)2SU(2)_2 Chern-Simons action, with the U(1)U(1) flux-attachment sector for the fermionic state, as a derived rather than assumed result, respecting the global consistency conditions of flux attachment on closed manifolds.

  3. The full topological data of the Pfaffian universality class follow from the construction: torus ground-state degeneracy 3q3q at ν=1/q\nu=1/q; quasiparticle charge e/4e/4 at ν=1/2\nu=1/2; the 2n−12^{n-1}-fold degeneracy of 2n2n-quasihole states; and the non-Abelian braiding eigenvalues e−3πi/8e^{-3\pi i/8} and eπi/8e^{\pi i/8}, equivalently the Jones-polynomial Wilson-loop expectation values at the specialized parameter eπi/4e^{\pi i/4}.

These three components are logically interlocking and jointly support one objective, the pairing-to-topological-order duality for the Pfaffian universality class: without (2)-(3), (1) is a pairing theory without the topological dual; without (1) and (3), (2) is an assumed effective theory rather than a derivation; (3) is the observable consistency check on the combined construction (1)+(2).
