Hawking, Maldacena and Strominger (JHEP 05 (2001) 001) gave a microscopic derivation of the entropy of a two-dimensional de Sitter brane bounding two anti-de Sitter spaces — including the factor one quarter — as the entanglement entropy of the dual conformal field theory across the observer horizon, and argued that the same induced-gravity picture should apply in higher dimensions, where the effective Newton constant is dominated by the bulk-induced (dual matter) contribution. The unresolved core of their program, which remains open, is a fully consistent ultraviolet-complete realization of that picture: an explicit string-theoretic (or equivalent nonperturbative) construction of the de Sitter brane-world in which the AdS-cutoff/regulator identification and induced-Newton-constant dominance hold in a controlled expansion, together with a regulator-independent identification of the de Sitter horizon entropy in more than two dimensions as entanglement entropy, with all numerical coefficients — including coupling-dependent factors of the 3/4 type in AdS/CFT thermal comparisons — fixed from first principles. The later literature resolved substantial parts within holography (Ryu–Takayanagi entanglement entropy; exact matching of entanglement and gravitational entropy with an effective induced Newton constant; species-problem resolutions) and produced top-down string embeddings of de Sitter bubble-wall brane-worlds, but no construction completing the program is known.
Background
De Sitter space (dS) is the maximically symmetric solution of Einstein's equations with positive cosmological constant; it approximates both the inflationary early universe and the present accelerated expansion. Gibbons and Hawking showed in 1977 that a geodesic (freely falling) observer in de Sitter space is surrounded by a cosmological (observer) horizon and must assign it a thermodynamic entropy equal to one quarter of the horizon area in Planck units, , in analogy with black hole entropy. Unlike many black holes, no generally accepted microscopic derivation of this de Sitter entropy exists.
A long-standing candidate microscopic origin is quantum entanglement. The entanglement entropy of a quantum field theory is the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density matrix obtained by tracing over degrees of freedom in an unobservable region; when that region is bounded by a horizon, the fields on the two sides are entangled and the entanglement entropy diverges near the horizon with a leading term proportional to the horizon area. Susskind and Uglum conjectured that this divergent entanglement is precisely matched by the one-loop quantum correction to Newton's constant : if the two divergences are identified, the renormalized area law would count entanglement, and Jacobson argued on this basis that black hole entropy can be ascribed to entanglement if is wholly induced by quantum fluctuations of matter fields (Sakharov's induced-gravity idea). In two spacetime dimensions this works cleanly — both quantities carry the same universal logarithmic divergence, and Fiola, Preskill, Strominger and Trivedi showed that two-dimensional black hole entropy can be ascribed to entanglement when is induced. In more than two dimensions both the entanglement entropy and receive power-law divergences whose coefficients depend on the ultraviolet regulator, so the precise identification is scheme-dependent; the species problem (with matter species the entanglement entropy grows like while grows only like at a fixed fundamental cutoff) obstructs it further.
Hawking, Maldacena and Strominger (HMS) placed this logic in a brane-world setting. In the Randall–Sundrum scenario, a codimension-one brane — a defect carrying tension, on which our universe would live — embedded in anti-de Sitter space (AdS, the maximally symmetric solution with negative cosmological constant) can localize four-dimensional gravity. HMS studied a de Sitter brane with positive tension bounding two AdS bulks (Euclideanly, an brane gluing two copies of hyperbolic three-space into an instanton, a finite-action solution of the Euclidean field equations) and, using a variant of the AdS/CFT correspondence (the conjectured equivalence between gravity in AdS and a conformal field theory, CFT, on its boundary), described the system as a CFT with central charge (the central charge measures the number of effective degrees of freedom of a two-dimensional CFT; is the AdS radius and the three-dimensional Planck mass) coupled to two-dimensional gravity with a short-distance cutoff at the AdS scale. In two dimensions this yields a microscopic derivation of the de Sitter entropy including the factor one quarter: the entanglement formula evaluated at the horizon, with the conformal factor and the cutoff, reproduces exactly the macroscopic with the de Sitter radius. In four dimensions the same reasoning gives , where is the holographic radial cutoff and the effective number of CFT degrees of freedom ( for the maximally supersymmetric four-dimensional gauge theory, N=4 super-Yang–Mills) — precisely the form expected for induced gravity — and the horizon entropy can be interpreted as the entropy of the thermal gas of Rindler particles (the thermal bath seen by an accelerated observer) near the horizon.
The authors were explicit that the derivation is complete only in two dimensions and only at the level of an effective description. Their stated open issues are: (i) no embedding of this de Sitter brane-world into a fully consistent string-theory construction is known, and the observations are relevant only if such examples exist; (ii) above two dimensions the conjectured precise relation between entanglement entropy and the one-loop (induced) correction to Newton's constant remains unsettled because power-law divergences make both regulator-dependent; (iii) the numerical coefficients relating weakly coupled field-theory entropy computations to the holographic (supergravity) results are scheme- and coupling-dependent — for example the known 3/4 factor relating strongly and weakly coupled free energies in AdS/CFT thermal comparisons — and no first-principles determination is given; (iv) realizing the viewpoint in which Newton's constant is entirely induced, so that horizon entropy is wholly entanglement of ordinary fields, requires either an explicit string construction or a novel nonperturbative formulation, the paper noting that closed-string poles arise as loop effects in open string theory and suggesting that the full closed-string dynamics might be contained in open string field theory (a formulation of string theory as a field theory on the space of string configurations), in which case Newton's constant could be induced. Since 2001 the holographic-entanglement program (the Ryu–Takayanagi prescription, which computes the entanglement entropy of a boundary theory from the area of a minimal surface in the dual spacetime, and its successors) has made the effective, regulator-matched version of the entropy identification precise, and top-down (constructed within a full string theory rather than as an effective model) string embeddings of de Sitter bubble-wall brane-worlds have been constructed; neither development supplies the fully consistent induced-gravity realization with first-principles coefficients that HMS conditioned their conclusions on.
Problem Statement
Can the Hawking–Maldacena–Strominger induced-gravity account of de Sitter entropy be completed in a fully consistent ultraviolet-complete theory, i.e. one that remains valid, with no hidden new physics, up to arbitrarily high energies? Concretely, construct a realization — an explicit string-theoretic embedding, or an equivalent nonperturbative formulation — of the de Sitter brane-world (a de Sitter brane bounding two anti-de Sitter bulks with a localized graviton), and within that single realization establish all of the following:
-
Controlled induced-gravity regime: the assumptions of the original derivation hold in a controlled expansion — the AdS radial cutoff is identified with a field-theory regulator, and the effective Newton constant on the brane is dominantly induced by the bulk (equivalently, dual matter-field) degrees of freedom, with any bare or classical contribution suppressed parametrically, i.e. by a power of the small expansion parameter.
-
Regulator-independent entropy identification in more than two dimensions (in particular four): the de Sitter horizon entropy equals the entanglement entropy of the dual matter fields across the horizon as a scheme-independent statement, overcoming the power-law regulator dependence that left the Susskind–Uglum-type conjecture unsettled above two dimensions.
-
First-principles coefficients: the numerical constants relating the weakly coupled field-theory entropy computation to the holographic result — including coupling-dependent factors of the type of the 3/4 factor in AdS/CFT thermal free-energy comparisons — are derived within the construction, with no scheme- or coupling-dependent constant left unfitted.
The objective — a microscopic, UV-complete account of de Sitter horizon entropy as entanglement in the induced-gravity brane-world framework — is met only when all three conditions hold. Since the source itself conditions the relevance of the whole construction on the existence of such examples, a rigorous no-go result — a proof from the principles of string theory or quantum gravity, with explicitly stated assumptions, that no such fully consistent realization can exist — would equally settle the question.
