The 1994 Vafa-Witten computation of the partition function of topologically twisted super Yang-Mills theory on compact four-manifolds is an exact strong-coupling test of the Montonen-Olive S-duality conjecture, but it rests on unproven foundations: the 'very optimistic' identification of the path integral with the Euler characteristic of the algebro-geometric compactification of instanton moduli space, an uncontrolled treatment of singular moduli spaces and reducible connections, a holomorphic anomaly on surfaces observed experimentally without a microscopic derivation, and unexplained appearances of rational conformal field theory characters and string oscillator partition functions in four-dimensional instanton counting. The problem is to complete these foundations: derive from the twisted path integral exactly which quantity the theory computes, prove the modular transformation laws under S-duality predicted by Vafa and Witten for general four-manifolds, gauge groups (including non-simply-laced ones), and 't Hooft fluxes, and explain the physical origin of the affine-Lie-algebra and symmetric-product structures. Later work has rigorously defined Vafa-Witten invariants via virtual fundamental classes (intersection-theoretic substitutes for the ordinary fundamental class, defined even on singular moduli spaces), derived the holomorphic anomaly from the Coulomb-branch effective theory, and verified modularity in restricted families of surfaces and ranks, but the general equivalences and transformation laws remain unproven.
Background
In four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric () super Yang-Mills theory, the Montonen-Olive duality conjecture predicts an exact equivalence between the theory at coupling and a dual description at coupling , exchanging electric and magnetic degrees of freedom and replacing the gauge group by its Langlands dual. Combining the theta angle with the coupling gives the complex parameter , and the conjecture asserts that the physics is invariant under the action of on (S-duality).
Vafa and Witten (1994) tested this at strong coupling by studying a topological twist of super Yang-Mills on a compact, oriented, smooth four-manifold . The twist modifies the coupling of the theory to the curvature of so that one supersymmetry charge becomes a scalar, making the path integral independent of the metric on . In the strong-coupling limit the path integral formally localizes on the moduli space of solutions of generalized instanton equations (a self-duality equation for the gauge field together with equations for adjoint scalar fields), and the partition function reduces to a curvature integral that formally computes the Euler characteristic of this moduli space. Because instantons carry a -valued magnetic flux , the theory with gauge group has one partition-function component for each such 't Hooft flux, and S-duality predicts that the vector transforms as a vector-valued modular form (a tuple of functions that mix linearly under the group action, each carrying the same modular weight) of a duality group acting on , with specific modular weight and fractional powers of — conjecturally weight , where is the Euler characteristic of , and a -shift governed by a central-charge-like quantity for gauge group .
Two obstructions kept this from being a theorem. First, the instanton moduli space is noncompact, because instantons can shrink to zero size (small instantons), and it is generally singular at reducible connections. On a Kähler surface, algebraic geometry provides a natural compactification by the moduli space of semistable sheaves (semistability is an algebraic stability condition on coherent sheaves for which the moduli space is compact), and Vafa and Witten adopted this compactification 'very optimistically', stating explicitly that they did not know how to justify the identification of the curvature integral with the Euler characteristic of this compactification from the field theory, and leaving open how to define the partition function at the singular loci. Second, on four-manifolds with — one self-dual harmonic two-form, the basic example being the complex projective plane — the computed generating functions fail to be holomorphic in : they obey explicit holomorphic-anomaly equations of the kind satisfied by mock modular forms (modular objects that become modular only after adding a non-holomorphic completion), a phenomenon Vafa and Witten exhibited experimentally without a microscopic field-theoretic derivation.
The computations also produced unexplained structures from two-dimensional physics. Blowing up a point of multiplies the partition function by characters of the two-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten model (a rational conformal field theory whose symmetry algebra is an affine Kac-Moody algebra, the loop-algebra extension of a Lie algebra). On ALE spaces — asymptotically locally Euclidean, noncompact hyper-Kähler four-manifolds obtained as minimal resolutions of quotients for a finite subgroup of — results of Nakajima identify the generating functions with affine Lie algebra characters and exhibit an affine Kac-Moody algebra action on the middle-degree cohomology of the instanton moduli spaces, whose precise relation to the -cohomology (square-integrable harmonic forms) relevant on noncompact spaces was left unclear. On the K3 surface the partition function reproduces the oscillator partition function of the bosonic string through the cohomology of symmetric products. Vafa and Witten left open whether a higher-dimensional (five- or six-dimensional, or string-theoretic) framework explains these appearances, how S-duality should be formulated on noncompact manifolds with boundary conditions, and how the curvature-integral Euler characteristic compares with the cohomology theories used in the ALE results.
Problem Statement
The problem is to complete the mathematical and physical foundations of the Vafa-Witten strong-coupling test of S-duality, as delimited by the limitations its authors explicitly acknowledged. The single common objective is to make the topologically twisted super Yang-Mills partition function on a four-manifold an exactly defined physical quantity whose S-duality transformation properties are proven. Three linked requests serve this objective, all at the stated generality:
-
Path-integral definition. Derive from the twisted path integral, rather than assume, which quantity it computes. This requires justifying or correcting the identification of the curvature-integral Euler characteristic with the Euler characteristic (or virtual invariant, an intersection-theoretic count defined on the moduli space's virtual fundamental class, which exists even when the space is singular) of the algebro-geometric compactification of instanton moduli space by semistable sheaves; extending the definition to singular moduli spaces and reducible connections; and covering general gauge groups, four-manifolds (including non-Kähler ones, where the sheaf-theoretic compactification is unavailable), and 't Hooft fluxes with torsion. It includes formulating the S-duality predictions on noncompact manifolds with boundary conditions, and clarifying the relation between the curvature-integral Euler characteristic and the -cohomology or middle-degree cohomology arising for instanton moduli spaces on ALE spaces.
-
Modularity. Prove the S-duality prediction for the partition function: for general four-manifolds and gauge groups — including non-simply-laced groups, where the acting duality group is a Hecke group (a discrete subgroup of playing the role that plays in the simply-laced case) rather than — the components transform as modular forms with the weights and -shifts predicted by Vafa and Witten (for example the conjectural weight ), and for four-manifolds with the required non-holomorphic (mock-modular) completion is derived from the microscopic theory rather than observed experimentally.
-
Physical origin. Explain, within a physical framework, why rational conformal field theory characters, affine Kac-Moody algebra actions on instanton-moduli cohomology, and bosonic and fermionic string oscillator partition functions (symmetric-product structures) appear in four-dimensional instanton counting, including whether every rational conformal field theory arises from some (possibly noncompact) four-manifold in this sense.
The resolution boundary of the problem is the general, source-faithful statement above.
