In 1990 Guagnelli, Marinari and Parisi proposed extracting two-hadron scattering lengths from configuration-by-configuration fluctuations of hadron masses in finite-volume lattice QCD, converting the fluctuation-induced energy shifts with Lüscher's relation, in quenched simulations with staggered and Wilson quarks. The paper itself flagged four limitations: the quenched approximation omits quark-exchange/annihilation ('eye') diagrams and sea-quark effects; the pion-nucleon channel was too noisy for its scattering length to yield a controlled determination of the nucleon sigma term; Wilson-fermion results suffer discretization artefacts from fluctuations of the critical hopping parameter; and the isospin decomposition remained within a four-different-flavour 'toy' world, with chiral extrapolation to the physical point deferred to future unquenched calculations. The meson-meson half of the program is closed: full four-point functions including eye diagrams were computed by Kuramashi et al. (1993) and Fukugita et al. (1995); Bernard and Golterman (1996) showed that the quenched theory modifies Lüscher's relation itself with uncontrolled enhanced corrections; and unquenched, physical-pion-mass determinations of ππ scattering in both isospin channels now exist (Blum et al. 2021; Bruno et al. 2023). The meson-nucleon half remains open to a controlled determination: S-wave πN scattering lengths in both isospin channels have been extracted at unphysically heavy pion mass on a single ensemble (Bulava et al. 2023); both channels have since been reached at the physical pion mass, but only as a by-product of a two-ensemble nucleon-polarizability calculation, without a dedicated analysis of sea-quark, chiral, continuum and finite-volume systematics (Wang et al. 2023); and only the I = 3/2 channel has been reached in a dedicated scattering analysis, on a single ensemble at one lattice spacing and one volume (Alexandrou et al. 2024). A dedicated determination of both lengths at the physical point, with sea-quark, chiral, continuum and finite-volume systematics quantified, therefore remains the target. The closely related nucleon sigma term stands in a live tension between standard direct lattice analyses (about 38-45 MeV) and dispersive Roy-Steiner / two-loop chiral analyses (about 55-60 MeV); that tension motivates the πN amplitudes sought here but is not itself part of the target.
Background
Lattice QCD is the ab initio, non-perturbative regularization of quantum chromodynamics: Euclidean spacetime is replaced by a finite hypercubic grid of spacing and spatial extent , quark fields live on sites, gauge fields on links, and hadron properties are extracted from Monte Carlo estimates of Euclidean correlation functions over gauge-field configurations ('ensembles'). In a periodic box, a two-hadron state of zero total momentum has an energy shifted from the free value ; Lüscher proved that, below inelastic threshold and up to exponentially small corrections, this shift determines the elastic S-wave scattering length :
with and . The scattering length is the leading coefficient of the effective-range expansion of the S-wave phase shift , , and sets the strength of low-energy interactions.
The source paper introduced a fluctuation method: on each gauge configuration the effective masses of one- and two-hadron correlators fluctuate around their ensemble means; the second moment of the per-configuration mass distribution encodes the volume-dependent energy shift, which Lüscher's relation converts into a scattering length. The simulations were quenched — the fermion determinant is omitted, so the gauge field does not respond to virtual quark-antiquark pairs — which suppresses all sea-quark effects and leaves only gluon-exchange ('valence') diagrams: quark-annihilation 'eye' diagrams are absent. Two fermion discretizations were used: staggered (Kogut-Susskind) quarks, which retain a remnant chiral symmetry, and Wilson quarks, which break chiral symmetry explicitly so that the massless limit is reached only at a critical value of the hopping parameter; per-configuration fluctuations of then act as a fluctuating mass counterterm and can fake chiral behaviour. To avoid annihilation diagrams entirely, the meson-meson channel was built from four different quark flavours (a 'toy' channel). The paper reported a small scattering length (of order 0.02 fm, in physical units, for staggered quarks at ) in the four-flavour channel, a tentative pion-nucleon scattering length of order 0.7 fm in the quark-mass range , and only a qualitative indication for the nucleon sigma term.
The nucleon sigma term, , measures the light-quark scalar content of the nucleon; by the Feynman-Hellmann theorem it equals the response of the nucleon mass to the light-quark mass, and by the Cheng-Dashen low-energy theorem it is related to the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude evaluated at the subthreshold (unphysical) point. Pion-nucleon scattering and the sigma term are therefore two faces of one problem. is a Standard-Model input to the nucleon mass decomposition, to baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT, the systematic low-energy effective field theory of pions and nucleons), and — through the nucleon scalar couplings — to dark-matter direct-detection cross sections.
Modern scattering calculations use unquenched ensembles with or sea-quark flavours, improved, domain-wall or twisted-mass discretizations (alternative fermion formulations with better chiral properties, evaluated at several lattice spacings so the continuum limit can be taken), variational (generalized eigenvalue) analyses of two-hadron spectra with large operator bases, and all-to-all propagator techniques for quark-disconnected diagrams. Baryon correlation functions suffer exponential signal-to-noise degradation, making near-threshold levels statistically expensive; the pion-nucleon channel requires quark-disconnected contributions; and the resonance — the lowest resonance, of spin-parity and isospin , lying just above threshold — strongly mixes with the S-wave channel. Nucleon two- and three-point functions are contaminated by and excited states — precisely the physics now understood to drive the sigma-term tension.
The source paper closed by acknowledging these limitations: the omission of exchange diagrams (and sea quarks), the insufficient quality of the pion-nucleon signal for a quantitative sigma-term extraction, the Wilson artefacts, and the restriction to a four-flavour toy world with chiral extrapolation left to future unquenched calculations.
Problem Statement
The open problem: a controlled determination, from unquenched () lattice QCD, of the S-wave pion-nucleon scattering lengths in both physical isospin channels — I = 1/2, including its quark-disconnected contributions, and I = 3/2, under the nearby Δ(1232) resonance — at the physical pion mass (reached by chiral extrapolation where the simulated pion masses are heavier), with sea-quark, chiral, continuum and finite-volume systematics quantified. The question concerns the physical observables of the source program — the S-wave πN scattering lengths in the physical isospin channels — rather than the particular per-configuration fluctuation technique used in 1990: the group that continued the program pursued the same observables with standard four-point-function methods and identified the blocking deficiency of the 1990 calculation as physical (missing exchange/annihilation diagrams), while Bernard and Golterman (1996) showed that the quenched framework cannot in principle yield controlled scattering lengths, which is why the unquenched condition is required. The ππ part of the source program — annihilation and sea-quark effects, isospin decomposition, and physical-point chiral extrapolation for meson-meson channels — is resolved and is not part of the open target.
The nucleon sigma term , its subthreshold-amplitude relation to πN scattering (Cheng-Dashen low-energy theorem), and the present discrepancy between standard direct lattice determinations (about 38-45 MeV) and dispersive Roy-Steiner or two-loop chiral analyses (about 55-60 MeV) are retained here as motivation and context for the πN amplitudes sought; they are not part of the target.
