Type IIB superstring theory on AdS3 x S3 x M (M = K3 or T4) supported by Ramond-Ramond (RR) three-form flux admits a hybrid (Berkovits-Vafa-Witten) worldsheet description as a sigma model on the supergroup PSU(1,1|2) (Euclidean PSU(2|2)) coupled to ghosts. Dolan and Witten (1999) determined the supersymmetric constraint equations for the massless, compactification-independent vertex operators of this model and showed that they reproduce the linearized D=6, N=(2,0) supergravity equations on AdS3 x S3 - but they fixed those equations by symmetry and smoothness rather than deriving them from the worldsheet operator construction, worked only to leading order in alpha', and did not include dependence on M. The open problem stated here is to complete the worldsheet foundation of this vertex-operator calculus: derive the AdS-deformed constraint operators and their action on vertex functions directly from the worldsheet theory (exactly or perturbatively in alpha'), decide the alpha'-exactness of the leading-order vertex operators and their correlation functions (computing corrections if present), and extend the construction to M-dependent states and the associated Kaluza-Klein spectrum.

The regime of the problem is the pure-RR, general-radius (finite level kk) hybrid sigma model. Other flux and limit regimes - the NS-NS flux case, the tensionless k=1k=1 limit, the plane-wave limit, and mixed-flux settings - lie outside the scope of this statement.

Background

Type IIB superstring theory on the product spacetime AdS3 x S3 x M (where M is K3, the Calabi-Yau two-fold, or T4, the four-torus), supported by a self-dual Ramond-Ramond (RR) three-form flux, is the near-horizon geometry of the D1-D5 brane system and a basic instance of the AdS/CFT correspondence. A worldsheet definition of strings in such a background is difficult because RR fields couple to spin fields in the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz (RNS) formalism, spoiling worldsheet supersymmetry. The hybrid formalism of Berkovits, Vafa and Witten (BVW) circumvents this: besides bosonic coordinates xp(z,zˉ)x^p(z,\bar z), p=1,…,6p=1,\dots,6, it uses worldsheet fermions θa\theta^a, θˉa\bar\theta^a together with conjugate momenta that make six-dimensional spacetime supersymmetry manifest, so that RR backgrounds can be added without spin fields (Berkovits, Vafa and Witten 1999; Berkovits 2000). On AdS3 x S3 with RR flux the momenta can be integrated out and xx, θ\theta, θˉ\bar\theta combine into a group-valued field gg on the supergroup manifold PSU(2|2) - the projectivization of SU(2|2), obtained by dividing out its U(1) center; in Lorentzian signature the relevant real form is PSU(1,1|2) - so the worldsheet theory becomes a sigma model with that supergroup target, coupled to bosonic ghosts ρ\rho, σ\sigma. The spacetime supersymmetry PSU(2|2) x PSU(2|2) acts by left and right multiplication g→agb−1g \to agb^{-1}. Because the RR-flux worldsheet is an interacting sigma model rather than a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model, its operator algebra is not free-field; this is the structural reason the RR case is much harder than the NS-NS case.

Massless vertex operators are sought as functions V(x,θ,θˉ;ρ+iσ,ρˉ+iσˉ)V(x,\theta,\bar\theta;\rho+i\sigma,\bar\rho+i\bar\sigma) of the fields but not of their derivatives (an ansatz modeled on the flat-space case), expanded in ghost excitations as V=∑m,nem(iσ+ρ)+n(iσˉ+ρˉ)Vm,nV=\sum_{m,n}e^{m(i\sigma+\rho)+n(i\bar\sigma+\bar\rho)}V_{m,n}. In flat space the physical-state conditions of the small N=4 worldsheet superconformal algebra - the vanishing of the modes T0T_0, G0±G_0^{\pm}, J0J_0 and their right-moving partners on VV, together with a spin-zero (Laplacian) condition - were derived from the free-field operator algebra and yield differential constraint equations on the component superfields Vm,nV_{m,n}. Dolan and Witten (1999) deformed these constraints to the RR AdS3 x S3 background: replacing flat derivatives by the left-invariant vector fields FaF^a, EaE^a, KabK^{ab} on PSU(2|2) and adding lower-order curvature terms, they fixed the deformed equations - equations (2.18)-(2.20), together with the Laplacian condition (4.2) on the surviving ghost-sector superfield V1,1V_{1,1} - uniquely by requiring (i) a smooth deformation of the flat-space equations and (ii) invariance under a deformed action (2.21) of PSU(2|2) x PSU(2|2) on the Vm,nV_{m,n}. In this deformed action the EaE^a-type supersymmetry generators, unlike FaF^a and KabK^{ab}, acquire ghost-proportional corrections (terms of the form e−ρ−iσFe^{-\rho-i\sigma}F) that mix the ghost and matter sectors - a structural feature any first-principles construction of the constraint operators must reproduce. After gauge fixing, the physical superfield V1,1V_{1,1} has the field content of D=6, N=(2,0) supergravity with one supergravity and one tensor multiplet, and the constraint equations were shown component by component to be equivalent to the linearized D=6, N=(2,0) supergravity equations expanded around AdS3 x S3 (results reviewed in Dolan 2001).

Three limitations were explicit in that work. First, the constraint equations were fixed by symmetry and smoothness, not derived: the authors state it would be desirable to derive equations (2.18)-(2.20) directly by constructing the constraint operators and computing their exact (or alpha'-perturbative) action on vertex functions; here α′\alpha' is the string length-squared parameter, and the expansion in α′\alpha' (equivalently in the inverse flux level or curvature radius) measures stringy corrections beyond the supergravity approximation. Second, the analysis is performed to leading order in α′\alpha', with exactness beyond leading order conjectured from the high degree of symmetry but not established. Third, only massless states independent of the compactification manifold MM are treated.

Problem Statement

For the type IIB superstring on AdS3×S3×M\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3\times M (M=M= K3 or T4T^4) supported by Ramond-Ramond three-form flux, in the hybrid (Berkovits-Vafa-Witten) worldsheet formalism, establish the vertex-operator calculus from first principles at the worldsheet level, replacing the symmetry-based, leading-order-in-α′\alpha', compactification-independent analysis of Dolan and Witten (1999). The problem has three jointly linked components serving this single objective:

  1. First-principles derivation of the constraint equations. Construct the constraint operators - the deformed N=4N=4 superconformal generators of the PSU(1,1∣2)PSU(1,1|2) (Euclidean PSU(2∣2)PSU(2|2)) hybrid sigma model with pure RR flux, including the ghost-corrected EE-type supercharges whose action mixes matter and ghost sectors - directly from the worldsheet fields, and compute their exact, or perturbative in α′\alpha', action on the vertex functions Vm,n(x,θ,θˉ)V_{m,n}(x,\theta,\bar\theta), so that the AdS-deformed constraint equations (the analogs of Dolan-Witten equations (2.18)-(2.20) together with the conditions (4.1)-(4.2) on the surviving superfield V1,1V_{1,1}), or their α′\alpha'-corrected form derived from the worldsheet construction, follow as physical-state conditions of the worldsheet theory rather than being fixed by symmetry and smoothness.

  2. α′\alpha'-control. Determine whether the leading-order vertex operators and their identification with the linearized D=6D=6, N=(2,0)N=(2,0) supergravity and tensor-multiplet fields on AdS3×S3\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3 are exact in α′\alpha' (as conjectured from the high degree of symmetry), and, if not, compute the higher-order α′\alpha' corrections to the vertex operators and their correlation functions on the RR sigma model.

  3. Compactification dependence. Extend the explicit component-level matching and vertex-operator construction beyond states independent of the compactification manifold MM, to vertex operators carrying dependence on K3 or T4T^4 and the associated Kaluza-Klein spectrum on S3×MS^3\times M.

These components jointly delimit the regime in which the massless string on AdS3×S3×M\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3\times M with RR flux is under first-principles worldsheet control beyond the supergravity approximation.
