Superstrings on AdS3×S3×T4_3\times S^3\times T^4 with pure Neveu-Schwarz (NSNS) flux and WZW level k≥2k\ge 2 possess a long-string continuum arising from spectrally-flowed continuous representations. The asymptotic Bethe equations of the integrable worldsheet S matrix give this continuum as H=N(+)+N(−)w+μ+t2H=\frac{N^{(+)}+N^{(-)}}{w}+\mu+t^{2}, which starts directly at the BPS bound, while the worldsheet-WZW and spacetime-CFT analyses (spacetime CFT SymN(N=4 Liouville×T4)\mathrm{Sym}^N(\mathcal{N}{=}4\ \mathrm{Liouville}\times T^4)) predict a continuum separated from the BPS bound by a positive gap. The open problem is to determine the exact finite-volume (wrapping-corrected) spectrum of the spectrally-flowed sectors at k≥2k\ge 2 and thereby to settle whether wrapping effects generate the gap and reconcile the integrability description with the WZW/CFT spectrum, together with the underlying quantum-mechanical realization of the resulting spectrum.

Background

The AdS3_3/CFT2_2 correspondence relates type IIB superstring theory on the spacetime AdS3×S3×T4\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3\times T^4 to a two-dimensional conformal field theory. The background is supported by a mixture of two kinds of three-form flux: Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz (NSNS) flux, whose integer strength kk is the level of an affine Kac-Moody algebra, and Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux of continuous strength hh. In uniform light-cone gauge the worldsheet theory is an integrable two-dimensional model: excitations scatter with a factorized two-body S matrix, and the planar spectrum is captured by Bethe equations, i.e. algebraic quantization conditions on a set of mode numbers. Such Bethe equations are asymptotic: at finite volume they receive wrapping corrections (virtual particles that wrap the worldsheet circle), which are resummed exactly by the mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (mTBA) — a set of integral equations obtained by analytically continuing the theory to a dual mirror model. The light-cone Hamiltonian HH measures excitation energy above the vacuum, and the BPS bound (from the preserved supersymmetry algebra) states H≥0H\ge 0; the vacuum and a finite Clifford module of zero-energy states saturate it. At h=0h=0 the worldsheet theory is additionally a supersymmetric Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model based on sl(2,R)k⊕su(2)ksl(2,\mathbb{R})_k\oplus su(2)_k, so it can be solved exactly by conformal-field-theory methods, giving an independent handle on the spectrum. In the WZW description the Hilbert space splits into discrete-series representations (short strings, which stay away from the AdS boundary) and continuous representations (long strings, which can reach the boundary of AdS at finite energy cost); spectral flow — an automorphism of the affine algebra that shifts the AdS winding by an integer ww — maps representations into one another and must be imposed level-by-level, so long strings appear in winding sectors w≥1w\ge 1. Maldacena and Ooguri established this structure and showed that at k≥2k\ge 2 the spacetime theory contains a long-string continuum, while Eberhardt and Gaberdiel showed the spacetime CFT at k≥2k\ge 2 is the symmetric product orbifold SymN(N=4 Liouville theory×T4)\mathrm{Sym}^N(\mathcal{N}{=}4\ \mathrm{Liouville}\ \mathrm{theory}\times T^4), where the Liouville factor isolates the vacuum by a positive gap so that the long-string continuum is separated from the BPS/short-string sector; at the minimal level k=1k=1 the Liouville factor disappears, the dual CFT is the free symmetric product orbifold SymN(T4)\mathrm{Sym}^N(T^4), and no long-string continuum survives. On the integrability side, Baggio and Sfondrini showed that at h=0h=0 the worldsheet S matrix is diagonal and chiral, with a Dray-'t Hooft phase only between excitations of opposite chirality; Dei and Sfondrini solved the resulting Bethe ansatz and mirror TBA in closed form, showed that all wrapping corrections cancel for the discrete (short-string) spectrum, and gave the model a spin-chain interpretation whose spectrum matches the WZW prediction. Against this backdrop, Sfondrini (2020) exhibited exceptional solutions of the Bethe equations: when the effective quantization length is Reff=wkR_{\mathrm{eff}}=wk, a new class of zero-energy modes appears for k≥2k\ge 2, carrying a continuous momentum t∈Rt\in\mathbb{R} and distinct from the torus zero-modes. Including them, the light-cone energy in the winding sector ww is H=N(+)+N(−)w+μ+t2H=\frac{N^{(+)}+N^{(-)}}{w}+\mu+t^{2} with level-matching N(+)=N(−) mod (kw)N^{(+)}=N^{(-)}\ \mathrm{mod}\ (kw), where N(±)N^{(\pm)} count chiral/antichiral mode numbers and μ\mu is the bound-state charge; at k=1k=1 these solutions are absent and the Bethe partition function instead reproduces the single-cycle spectrum of SymN(T4)\mathrm{Sym}^N(T^4) exactly. For k≥2k\ge 2 this formula describes a long-string continuum that is ungapped — it reaches the BPS bound — whereas the WZW/spacetime-CFT result for continuous representations takes the same quadratic form in tt but shifted by a positive constant, i.e. a gapped continuum. Sfondrini suggested that the missing gap might arise from finite-volume (wrapping) effects associated with the new zero-modes and called for a full mTBA analysis at k≥2k\ge 2; the same letter observed that the purely algebraic form of the spectrum suggests an underlying quantum-mechanical system — a Hilbert space and Hamiltonian, perhaps a spin chain, with non-local interactions at k≥2k\ge 2 of the current-current type, similar to the solvable TTˉT\bar T deformation of two-dimensional quantum field theories (an irrelevant deformation built from the stress-energy tensor) — whose construction remains open, the existing spin-chain results covering only the discrete sector.

Problem Statement

Determine the exact finite-volume (wrapping-corrected) spectrum of the pure-NSNS (h=0h=0) AdS3×S3×T4_3\times S^3\times T^4 superstring in spectrally-flowed sectors at WZW level k≥2k\ge 2, and thereby settle the fate of the gap above the BPS bound in the long-string continuum. Concretely: (1) determine the exact finite-volume continuum above the BPS bound in each winding sector ww for the pure-NSNS worldsheet at k≥2k\ge 2, incorporating the spectrally-flowed zero-modes carrying continuous momentum tt (with Reff=wkR_{\mathrm{eff}}=wk and level-matching N(+)=N(−) mod (kw)N^{(+)}=N^{(-)}\ \mathrm{mod}\ (kw)) — in particular, whether finite-volume corrections involving these zero-modes shift the asymptotic-Bethe continuum H=N(+)+N(−)w+μ+t2H=\frac{N^{(+)}+N^{(-)}}{w}+\mu+t^{2} by a positive gap, reconciling it with the gapped continuum of the WZW/spacetime-CFT analysis (continuous sl(2,R)ksl(2,\mathbb{R})_k representations; spacetime CFT SymN(N=4 Liouville×T4)\mathrm{Sym}^N(\mathcal{N}{=}4\ \mathrm{Liouville}\times T^4)), or alternatively demonstrating that the exact spectrum is ungapped and identifying how the apparent conflict with the CFT analysis is resolved; (2) identify the quantum-mechanical structure responsible — a Hilbert space and Hamiltonian whose exact spectrum coincides with the resulting Bethe/TBA spectrum including the k≥2k\ge 2 zero-modes — or establish a precise obstruction to such a realization. The gap question is open, and either outcome for it is a resolution: the exact k≥2k\ge 2 long-string spectrum is to be derived from integrability and reconciled with the WZW/CFT description, together with the quantum-mechanical realization called for in (2) or a precise obstruction to it, consistently with the large-volume discrete spectrum of the short-string sector, the k=1k=1 collapse (continuum absent, Bethe partition function matching the single-cycle spectrum of SymN(T4)\mathrm{Sym}^N(T^4)), and the WZW identification Reff=ℓ0+j0R_{\mathrm{eff}}=\ell_0+j_0, N(±)=N,N~N^{(\pm)}=N,\tilde N.
