Uniqueness of strongly rational holomorphic vertex operator algebras (VOAs) of central charge 24 is settled for every non-zero Schellekens Lie algebra type: the six Lie algebra types proved in Lam and Shimakura's inertia-group paper (arXiv:1804.02521, posted 2018; Transformation Groups 2020) were the final cases of the case-by-case program, and uniqueness for every non-zero type is now settled, with three independent lines of proof. The genuine surviving open core of the classification is the moonshine uniqueness conjecture of Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman: the moonshine module V♮V^\natural is, up to isomorphism, the unique strongly rational holomorphic VOA of central charge 24 with vanishing weight-one space V1=0V_1=0. Every such VOA is extremal with character j(τ)−744j(\tau)-744, so characters cannot distinguish competitors, and the affine and lattice anchors that settled the other 70 cases are unavailable. The conjecture remains open as of mid-2026, with partial results (framed VOAs) and conditional results (slope and partition-function conjectures) known. The problem asks for a proof, or for an explicit counterexample (a 'fake moonshine module'), which would complete the classification of strongly rational holomorphic VOAs of central charge 24.

Background

A vertex operator algebra (VOA) is a Z\mathbb{Z}-graded complex vector space V=⨁n≥0VnV=\bigoplus_{n\ge 0}V_n equipped with a state-field correspondence a↦Y(a,z)a\mapsto Y(a,z) satisfying locality, vacuum and Virasoro axioms; it is the mathematical axiomatization of the chiral algebra of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. The Virasoro algebra acts with a fixed central charge cc, and a VOA is called holomorphic (or self-dual) when it is its own only irreducible module, i.e. a meromorphic chiral conformal field theory with a single primary field. It is called strongly rational (many authors say strongly regular for the same class of holomorphic VOAs) if it is of CFT type (V0V_0 spanned by the vacuum), rational (finitely many irreducible modules) and C2C_2-cofinite (a finiteness condition that makes the representation theory finite and the characters modular). For strongly rational holomorphic VOAs the central charge is a multiple of 88; at central charge 88 and 1616 the classification is complete, giving the lattice VOA of the E8E_8 root lattice at c=8c=8 and two isomorphism classes at c=16c=16 (Dong and Mason). The weight-one space V1V_1 of a holomorphic VOA is a Lie algebra under [a,b]=a(0)b[a,b]=a_{(0)}b, and the sub-VOA generated by V1V_1 is an affine Kac-Moody algebra, the current algebra of the theory. For central charge 2424, Schellekens proved in 1993 that V1V_1 must be one of 71 Lie algebras with specified levels (Schellekens' list): 70 non-zero reductive Lie algebras together with the zero algebra, the zero case meaning V1=0V_1=0. His partly heuristic derivation was later made fully rigorous; van Ekeren, Lam, Möller and Shimakura gave a new proof using orbifold theory and Kac's 'very strange formula'. A three-decade, many-author program then realized each of the 71 types by an explicit VOA, largely by cyclic orbifolds of the Leech lattice vertex operator algebra VΛV_\Lambda, and proved that for every non-zero type the realizing VOA is unique up to isomorphism. The final case-by-case pieces include the fifteen types settled by van Ekeren, Möller and Scheithauer via genus-zero orbifold dimension formulae and the six types settled by Lam and Shimakura via inertia groups; Betsumiya, Lam and Shimakura later gave an independent second proof of the whole uniqueness statement by confirming a conjecture of Höhn on the number of inequivalent simple-current extensions, and Möller and Scheithauer gave a third, geometric proof through a bijection between these VOAs and the 70 generalised deep holes of the Leech lattice VOA. In total there are exactly 70 isomorphism classes with V1≠0V_1\neq 0, one for each non-zero Schellekens type. The single remaining case is the zero Lie algebra, V1=0V_1=0. The known example is the moonshine module V♮V^\natural constructed by Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman as the vertex-algebraic resolution of monstrous moonshine: a holomorphic VOA of central charge 24 with V1=0V_1=0, automorphism group the Monster sporadic simple group, and graded character the modular invariant J(τ)=j(τ)−744=q−1+196884q+⋯J(\tau)=j(\tau)-744=q^{-1}+196884q+\cdots. By Zhu's modularity theorem, the character of any strongly rational holomorphic VOA of central charge 24 with V1=0V_1=0 is a weight-zero modular function for SL2(Z)\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}) with at most a simple pole at the cusp, and V1=0V_1=0 forces it to equal JJ; in particular every such VOA has dim⁡V2=196884\dim V_2=196884 and is extremal, meaning its character has the theoretically smallest possible low-order coefficients. The weight-two space carries the Griess algebra, a commutative non-associative algebra (product a(1)ba_{(1)}b) whose automorphism structure in V♮V^\natural recovers the Monster. Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman conjectured that holomorphicity, central charge 24 and V1=0V_1=0 alone single out V♮V^\natural up to isomorphism; this moonshine uniqueness conjecture is the only entry of Schellekens' list without a uniqueness theorem. The difficulty is structural: every technique that succeeded for the 70 non-zero types leans on the non-trivial affine Kac-Moody subalgebra V1V_1 or on a non-trivial lattice vertex sub-VOA forming a dual pair inside VV (reverse orbifold arguments, inertia group computations, genus-zero orbifold dimension formulae, and simple-current extension counting all start from such data). When V1=0V_1=0 there is no such anchor, and since all candidates share the character JJ, no character or modular-data computation can distinguish a hypothetical second example (a 'fake moonshine module') from V♮V^\natural. The best partial results either restrict the class (Lam and Yamauchi proved that a framed VOA, meaning one containing a suitable tensor product of simple Virasoro vertex algebras of central charge 1/21/2 as a Virasoro frame, that is holomorphic of central charge 24 with V1=0V_1=0 must be isomorphic to V♮V^\natural) or are conditional (Carpi and Codogni showed that a slope conjecture on the effective cone of the moduli space M‾g\overline{\mathcal{M}}_g of stable curves would force every such VOA to have the same partition functions as V♮V^\natural in all genera, and that two further conjectures on the partition-function subalgebra of V♮V^\natural would imply the uniqueness conjecture outright).

Problem Statement

Prove or refute the moonshine uniqueness conjecture of Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman, the last open case of the Schellekens classification: prove that every strongly rational holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge 24 whose weight-one space vanishes (V1=0V_1=0) is isomorphic to the moonshine module V♮V^\natural; or refute it by constructing a strongly rational holomorphic vertex operator algebra VV of central charge 24 with V1=0V_1=0 that is not isomorphic to V♮V^\natural (a 'fake moonshine module'), establishing its strong rationality (rationality, C2C_2-cofiniteness, CFT type, self-duality), its central charge 24, the vanishing of its weight-one space, and its non-isomorphism to V♮V^\natural. This is the single remaining entry of Schellekens' list of 71 possible weight-one Lie algebras (the zero Lie algebra); settling it completes the classification of strongly rational holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge 24, and a proof of uniqueness would in addition make the total of 71 isomorphism classes unconditional.
