For , the Bochner–Riesz means (the Fourier multiplier with symbol ) recover pointwise as only above a critical summability order . For the sharp range is known (Carbery–Rubio de Francia–Vega, 1988). For , Tao conjectured (1998) that the maximal operator is bounded on exactly when , the threshold being known to be best possible from below. Despite a chain of partial results culminating in Li and Wu's 2024 proof of the planar case for (the first sharp result with near 0), the conjecture remains open for in the plane and in all dimensions ; for no non-trivial positive result is known at all. The problem is to prove or refute the conjecture on this remaining range.
Background
The Bochner–Riesz means are the classical radial summation method for Fourier integrals on : for a summability order and scale ,
i.e. is the Fourier multiplier (an operator acting by multiplying the Fourier transform by a fixed function) with symbol , where denotes the positive part. These means were introduced by Bochner as a higher-dimensional analogue of Abel/Cesàro summation of one-dimensional Fourier series: they average the spectrum in the ball of radius with a smooth radial profile, and the question is how much smoothing is needed for the means to converge to as . At the operator truncates to the disk multiplier, and Fefferman's ball-multiplier theorem shows this already fails on for every in , so the question is meaningful only for .
For pointwise convergence, Stein's maximal principle (Stein, 1961) reduces the question to boundedness of the maximal Bochner–Riesz operator : convergence almost everywhere for every is equivalent to an bound for (in the range ; see the formulation in Li–Wu, 2024, after Tao). For the problem is completely solved: Carbery, Rubio de Francia and Vega (1988) proved almost everywhere convergence in the sharp range of .
The remaining case — functions rougher than , for which the radial Fourier summability threshold is genuinely different — was formulated as a conjecture by Tao (1998): extends to a bounded operator on whenever
and this threshold is sharp, since Tao's rescaled bump-packet example disproves the maximal bound below it (the critical order vanishes at and grows to as ; the hardest regime is close to near ). This conjecture is the last open piece of Stein's program on almost everywhere summability of Fourier integrals, and it has been a driving force behind modern restriction and decoupling theory — in particular the Bourgain–Demeter -decoupling theorem (2015), which controls norms of functions with Fourier support near a curved hypersurface by decomposing the support into small caps, is the engine of the strongest partial results.
The known partial results in the plane, prior to 2024, established the maximal bound only on a quadrilateral region strictly inside the conjectured triangle in the plane: Tao (2002) via an estimate, Li–Wu (2020) via an estimate using decoupling, and Gan–Wu (2024) and Kim (2025) via weighted -decoupling inequalities, which also gave the first beyond-interpolation result in and improved sufficient conditions for in dimensions 2 and 3 (still far from sharp). Li and Wu (2024, revised 2026) then proved the conjecture for in the range — the first sharp non-trivial result for with near , obtained through quantitative weighted estimates over unions of unit balls — so that in the plane the means converge almost everywhere for every and every when . They explicitly state that the remaining planar region (their Region B, ) is open, and that in dimensions no non-trivial positive result is known even for away from zero.
Problem Statement
Prove or disprove Tao's maximal Bochner–Riesz conjecture for : for every dimension and every , the maximal Bochner–Riesz operator
extends to a bounded operator on whenever ; equivalently, by Stein's maximal principle, almost everywhere for every exactly in this range of (the threshold being already known to be sharp from below, by Tao's example). The segment , is already proved by Li and Wu and need not be reproved; the surviving open core is the planar region together with the full conjecture in all dimensions , where for not even a non-sharp positive result is currently known. A valid refutation must exhibit, for some , and strictly above the conjectured threshold, an function for which the maximal bound (equivalently, almost everywhere convergence) fails.
