For the Witt algebra , the classification of Lie and Leibniz central extensions, derivations, and automorphisms is complete for semi-direct sums with a single indecomposable intermediate series module (tensor density modules by Gao–Jiang–Pei; the exceptional families and , and the central extensions and derivations of the irreducible quotient , by Buzaglo–Vishwa). The open problem addressed here is the extension of this structure package to the larger semi-direct sums with arbitrary copies of intermediate series modules, which arise as asymptotic symmetry algebras in non-Lorentzian physics. No systematic treatment of the multi-copy case is known; only isolated instances have been resolved.
Background
The Witt algebra , with and bracket , is the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields on the punctured complex plane; its unique nontrivial central extension is the Virasoro algebra of two-dimensional conformal field theory. A -graded -module is said to be of intermediate series if all of its homogeneous components are one-dimensional — these are precisely the modules with the same Hilbert series as itself, and in this sense the simplest infinite-dimensional -modules. Kaplansky and Santharoubane classified the indecomposable ones: the tensor density modules , , with action , and two exceptional families and , , obtained by blowing up the -plane at the two points where is reducible. Endowing such a module with the abelian Lie bracket and letting act by derivations produces a semi-direct sum (semi-direct product) Lie algebra . These algebras and their multi-module analogues occur as asymptotic symmetry algebras in non-Lorentzian physics — for example the planar Galilean conformal algebra and the BMS-like algebras of Carrollian boundary symmetries. The standard structure package of such an algebra consists of: its central extensions, classified by the second Lie algebra cohomology with trivial coefficients (skew-symmetric 2-cocycles modulo coboundaries); its Leibniz central extensions, classified by the second cohomology in Loday's Leibniz category, where the antisymmetry of cocycles is dropped and the group can be strictly larger than the Lie one; its derivation algebra , i.e. the linear maps satisfying ; and its automorphism group . Gao, Jiang, and Pei computed low-dimensional cohomology, derivations, and automorphisms for , and Buzaglo–Vishwa (2024) then treated and in full, together with the central extensions and derivations of , where is the unique nontrivial irreducible quotient of (with Mathieu and Martin–Piard having earlier classified the irreducible bounded -modules). The method of Buzaglo–Vishwa exploits the fact that these semi-direct sums are internally graded — the -grading is induced by the adjoint action of , so that every cocycle is cohomologous to one of degree zero — which reduces the computations to solvable functional equations on the integer indices; the authors stress that the technique applies to a wider class of internally graded Lie algebras and note that larger semi-direct sums involving multiple copies of intermediate series modules are already attracting interest from physics. What has no counterpart anywhere in the literature is the systematic package for multi-copy semi-direct sums with : mixing cocycles between distinct copies, cross-copy module homomorphisms entering derivations and automorphisms, and coincidences among the parameters of the copies are all genuinely new phenomena there. Only isolated instances have been treated case by case — the extended Schrödinger–Virasoro algebra, the twisted and deformative Schrödinger–Virasoro families, and loop-type current extensions such as the Affine-Virasoro algebras and — none of which yields a classification uniform in the module data.
Problem Statement
Let and let with be arbitrary indecomposable intermediate series -modules, each belonging to one of the three Kaplansky–Santharoubane families (), , or (), with repetitions and mixing of families allowed. Let as an abelian Lie algebra carrying the diagonal -action, and form the semi-direct sum . Determine, uniformly in and in the module parameters: (1) the second cohomology , given by explicit cocycle bases depending on the parameters of the copies; (2) the Leibniz second cohomology ; (3) the full derivation algebra , including the cross-copy homomorphism spaces that it involves; and (4) the automorphism group . The completed single-copy case (: Gao–Jiang–Pei for , with the reducible points and governed by the corrected values compiled in Buzaglo–Vishwa Theorem 2.10, which supersedes the Leibniz count of Gao–Jiang–Pei Theorem 3.5 at (see Buzaglo–Vishwa Remark 2.11); Buzaglo–Vishwa for and , and for the central extensions and derivations of ; the reducible tensor modules coincide with the exceptional families at , and ) serves as the template and consistency boundary: an answer is complete when it reduces to those published classifications at and covers all combinations at , with all degenerate parameter coincidences (repeated modules, , reducible tensor modules) handled explicitly.
