Let be a Kobayashi hyperbolic complex surface and let be a relatively compact subdomain with boundary of class such that the quotient is compact, where is the group of biholomorphic automorphisms of (the hypothesis of the source conjecture; it holds in particular when covers a compact complex manifold). If through every point of there passes a positive-dimensional complex analytic variety lying entirely in (the source's 'no totally real boundary point' condition), must the universal cover of be biholomorphic to the bidisk ? This is Conjecture 5.3 of Newsome (arXiv:2504.03935v2), and it is the exact counterpart of the second case of the smooth-boundary ball/bidisk dichotomy of Cheung–Fu–Krantz–Wong (Math. Scand. 2002). Together with Newsome's Theorem 1.1 (the ball case when a totally real boundary point is present, proved under the stronger hypotheses of a taut ambient manifold and a domain covering a compact manifold), an affirmative answer would complete the classification of domains with compact quotients on hyperbolic complex surfaces. No resolution and no counterexample are known; the conjecture is open as of August 2026.
Background
In one complex variable the uniformization theorem reduces the study of planar domains to the unit disk, but in several complex variables there is no analogue, and classifying the simply connected model domains is a basic open program. A rigidity thread within that program asks which bounded domains can cover compact complex manifolds. Wong (Invent. Math. 1977) proved that a strongly pseudoconvex bounded domain in (one whose boundary is curved strictly outward in every complex tangent direction) that covers a compact complex manifold is biholomorphic to the Euclidean unit ball, and Rosay (Ann. Inst. Fourier 1979) extended the conclusion to any bounded domain in with boundary covering a compact complex manifold. The smoothness hypothesis is essential, since the bidisk (with the unit disk) itself covers compact manifolds — quotients by cocompact lattices in — but its boundary has corners and is not even .
Several terms used throughout: a complex manifold is Kobayashi hyperbolic when the Kobayashi pseudometric (the largest pseudometric for which all holomorphic maps from the disk are distance-nonincreasing) is a true metric; it is taut when every sequence of holomorphic maps from the unit disk into it has a subsequence that either converges uniformly on compact sets or diverges to infinity; tautness is stronger than hyperbolicity. A boundary point is totally real, following Definition 3.3 of the source, if there exists no complex analytic variety of positive dimension that contains and lies entirely in ; thus the hypothesis that has no totally real point means every boundary point lies on some positive-dimensional complex analytic variety contained in the boundary. For smooth boundaries a strictly pseudoconvex point — one where the Levi form (the quadratic form measuring boundary curvature in the complex tangent directions) is positive definite — is totally real in this sense, since by the local maximum principle no positive-dimensional complex variety can lie in a strictly pseudoconvex boundary piece; the source glosses the two notions together in the smooth case, and at regularity, where the Levi form is no longer classically defined, the variety-based definition is the operative one. A boundary is of class if it is locally the level set of a defining function whose first derivatives are Lipschitz, so second derivatives exist only almost everywhere and are merely bounded. A bounded symmetric domain is a bounded domain that is a Hermitian symmetric space (a symmetric space carrying a compatible complex structure); in complex dimension 2 the only ones, up to biholomorphism, are the ball (rank 1) and the bidisk (rank 2).
Cheung, Fu, Krantz, and Wong (Math. Scand. 2002) proved the full dichotomy for smoothly bounded domains on surfaces: if is a Kobayashi hyperbolic complex surface and is a relatively compact subdomain with smooth () boundary such that the quotient is compact, then either is biholomorphic to the ball, or else the universal cover of is biholomorphic to the bidisk. The proof splits according to whether contains a strictly pseudoconvex (totally real) point: if it does, the classical ball-rigidity mechanism applies in any dimension; if it does not, a dimension-2 argument based on the boundary-accumulation results of Fu and Wong (Math. Ann. 1998; Complex Variables 2000) and on estimates for invariant volume forms on the bidisk identifies the bidisk as the only remaining universal cover. This second half of the argument uses a smooth defining function in an essential way.
Zimmer (Indiana Univ. Math. J. 2021) settled the case for domains in : a bounded domain in with boundary covering a compact manifold is biholomorphic to the ball. His proof rescales the domain (a technique introduced by Frankel, Acta Math. 1989) to produce noncompact automorphisms, then invokes a structure theorem of Frankel (Ann. of Math. 1995) and Nadel (Ann. of Math. 1990) — semisimplicity of the automorphism group of a universal cover of a compact complex manifold — to conclude that the domain is a bounded symmetric domain, and finally shows that regularity forces rank one, hence the ball; no bidisk case arises for domains in . Newsome (arXiv:2504.03935) combined a boundary localization technique of Lin and Wong (Illinois J. Math. 1990) with Zimmer's computations to handle subdomains of general taut manifolds: Theorem 1.1 states that if , a subdomain with boundary of a taut complex manifold, contains a totally real boundary point and covers a compact manifold, then is biholomorphic to the Euclidean ball. What remains in dimension 2 is precisely the complementary regime — no totally real boundary point — where Newsome's Conjecture 5.3 asserts that the universal cover must be the bidisk. Newsome notes that a proof of the conjecture might adapt the Section 4 argument of Cheung–Fu–Krantz–Wong, replacing their smooth defining function by a one, and anticipates some technical issues arising from that alteration. The motivation is the same dichotomy that appears in Wong's earlier uniformization theorem for compact Kähler surfaces of negative curvature (J. Differential Geom. 1981), where the universal cover is the ball or the bidisk.
Problem Statement
Let be a Kobayashi hyperbolic complex surface, i.e., a complex manifold of complex dimension whose Kobayashi pseudometric (the largest pseudometric on for which all holomorphic maps from the unit disk are distance-nonincreasing) is a true metric. Let be a relatively compact subdomain whose boundary is of class : is locally the level set of a defining function with nonvanishing differential whose first derivatives are Lipschitz. Let denote the group of biholomorphic automorphisms of , and suppose that admits a compact quotient in the sense of the source: the quotient topological space is compact. (This condition holds in particular when covers a compact complex manifold, i.e., when some discrete group acts freely, properly discontinuously, and cocompactly on .) Suppose further that contains no totally real boundary point: no point admits a positive-dimensional complex analytic variety with ; equivalently, every boundary point lies on some positive-dimensional complex analytic variety contained in the boundary.
Must the universal covering space of then be biholomorphic to the bidisk , where is the unit disk in ?
This is Conjecture 5.3 of Newsome (arXiv:2504.03935v2), with hypotheses and conclusion exactly as in the source once its Definitions 3.3 and 3.5 are unfolded. It is the exact counterpart of the second case of the smooth-boundary dichotomy of Cheung–Fu–Krantz–Wong (Math. Scand. 2002): under the same hypotheses with boundary and compact, either is biholomorphic to the ball or the universal cover of is biholomorphic to the bidisk, and the bidisk alternative is precisely the case with no strictly pseudoconvex (totally real) boundary point. An affirmative answer, combined with Newsome's Theorem 1.1 (which gives the ball when a totally real boundary point is present, under the stronger hypotheses of a taut ambient manifold and a domain covering a compact manifold), would complete the ball/bidisk dichotomy for domains with compact quotients on hyperbolic complex surfaces. A negative answer consists of an explicit and satisfying all the hypotheses above whose universal cover is not biholomorphic to the bidisk. The companion question in complex dimensions — where the source offers only a speculative trichotomy and no precise conjecture — lies outside this problem, which is the two-dimensional statement the source actually poses.
