Mid-infrared (3–20 μm) laser sources rely on second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) frequency conversion in bulk single crystals, but every material in current use — the chalcopyrites AgGaS2, AgGaSe2, and ZnGeP2 — fails at least one of the field's application requirements: large phase-matchable nonlinear coefficient, birefringence sufficient for phase matching, wide infrared transparency with low absorption, high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), absence of two-photon absorption at practical pump wavelengths, and growability into large, high-quality crystals. Because large optical nonlinearity and high damage resistance are physically anticorrelated (both tied to the electronic band gap and bond covalency), no known inorganic crystal meets all criteria simultaneously in the same bulk single crystal. The multi-criteria 'ideal mid-IR NLO crystal' discovery problem, in its natural class-level generality, remains open: strong partial solutions (BaGa4Se7, MgSiP2, Cd2In3Si2P7, and others) each leave at least one criterion unmet or unverified in bulk single-crystal form, and 2024–2026 reviews and discovery papers continue to state the trade-off as an unsolved challenge.
Background
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) and the coefficients . When an intense laser beam passes through a non-centrosymmetric crystal (one lacking inversion symmetry, the symmetry requirement for any second-order optical effect), the induced polarization contains a term quadratic in the optical field, so two photons of frequency combine into one photon of frequency . The strength of this second-order response is measured by the SHG coefficient (units pm/V, typically 1–100); in an actual phase-matched conversion experiment the usable strength is the effective coefficient , a geometry-dependent combination of the tensor components . Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs, laser resonators whose gain is the parametric frequency conversion itself) and difference-frequency generators use the same nonlinearity to convert mature near-IR pump lasers (e.g. the 1.064 μm Nd:YAG laser — neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet — or ~2 μm holmium/thulium lasers) into tunable output across the mid-infrared (roughly 3–20 μm), which is the key technology for molecular spectroscopy, trace-gas sensing, and environmental monitoring.
Phase matching and birefringence. Efficient conversion requires the fundamental and converted waves to stay in phase over the crystal length; this is achieved by exploiting birefringence (the anisotropic refractive index, quantified by ) so that, e.g., type-I phase matching (in which the two fundamental photons have parallel polarizations) holds. If is too small (as in AgGaSe2 pumped near 1 μm) phase matching is impossible; if too large, spatial walk-off limits the interaction length. The requirement is qualitative — birefringence sufficient for phase matching without prohibitive walk-off; for illustration, the balanced candidates Ba6In6Zn4Se19 (Zhou et al. 2020) and Cd2In3Si2P7 (Gao et al. 2026) both report .
The benchmark crystals and why they fail. The commercial workhorses are the chalcopyrite-type (a diamond-like tetrahedral structure adopted by I-III-VI2 semiconductors) compounds AgGaS2 (AGS), AgGaSe2 (AGSe), and ZnGeP2 (ZGP). AGS and AGSe have large coefficients ( of AGSe ≈ 39.5 pm/V, the highest figure of merit among them) but low laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDT, the maximum laser intensity a surface withstands before damage; protocol-dependent — pulse width, wavelength, repetition rate). AGSe additionally suffers strong two-photon absorption (TPA, the simultaneous absorption of two photons whose combined energy bridges the band gap), and its birefringence is too small to phase-match under 1 μm pumping. ZGP has an enormous coefficient but its band gap (~1.75 eV) makes it absorb via TPA at the most convenient pump wavelength (two 1 μm photons), and its damage threshold is moderate. Zhou et al. (2020) and Yelisseyev et al. (2020) state this joint-failure checklist explicitly, and Jing et al. (2018) restate it for oxide candidates.
The physical trade-off. A large demands narrow band gaps and highly polarizable, covalent bonds (favoring heavy chalcogenides and pnictides, compounds with group-15 anions such as phosphorus and arsenic), while a high LIDT and transparency at short wavelengths demand wide band gaps (favoring oxides and fluorides); mid-IR transparency to long wavelengths in turn favors heavy anions. Li et al. (2017) call this the 'incompatibility between large SHG efficiency and high LIDT'; it is the recurring motivation across the discovery literature surveyed by Chen et al. (2021), who reviewed over 500 non-centrosymmetric transition-metal chalcogenides and concluded that materials with 'excellent comprehensive performance' are still urgently needed.
Progress to date. The leading modern candidate is BaGa4Se7 (BGSe; Yao et al. 2010), a congruent-melting (i.e. it crystallizes directly from a melt of its own composition, enabling Bridgman growth — directional solidification in a crucible translated through a temperature gradient) selenide combining transparency from ~0.47 μm to the mid-IR, of order 24 pm/V, phase matchability, and an LIDT well above AgGaSe2; it is now used in high-average-power mid-IR OPOs (Sun et al. 2025). Yet 2026 work still reports unresolved phase and growth problems in BGSe (Zhang et al. 2026), and the discovery stream has continued past it. Other strong partial solutions — Na2In4SSe6-family supertetrahedral chalcogenides (frameworks built from large tetrahedral clusters of metal–chalcogen tetrahedra; Li et al. 2017, 'almost achieving balance'), MgSiP2 (He et al. 2023: pm/V, femtosecond-regime LIDT of 684 GW/cm2, transparency to 10.35 μm), Cd2In3Si2P7 (Gao et al. 2026: 8.8 × AgGaS2 SHG, 10.3 × AgGaS2 LDT, 0.62–18 μm transparency, ), KHg4Ga5S12 (Guo et al. 2026), and the vanadate oxybromide Cs2CdV2O6Br2 (Geng et al. 2025) — are each characterized mainly on polycrystalline powders or small crystals and leave at least one criterion (long-wave transparency, growth maturity, bulk single-crystal validation, or protocol-comparable LIDT) unmet. Recent tellurate and other oxide work (Wang et al. 2026, Chem. Sci.; Wang et al. 2026, Inorg. Chem. Front.) still frames the balanced combination as its objective, and even practical crystal growth of known candidates such as LiGaS2 remains difficult (Ma et al. 2026).
Problem Statement
Discover — by design, synthesis, and bulk single-crystal growth — an inorganic non-centrosymmetric nonlinear optical crystal that simultaneously satisfies, in one and the same bulk single crystal rather than only in polycrystalline powder form, all of the field's application criteria for mid-infrared frequency conversion, each at a level competitive with or exceeding the strongest performance the benchmark crystals AgGaS2, AgGaSe2, and ZnGeP2 deliver on that criterion's own axis, under the field's practical operating conditions: pumping by mature near-IR lasers in the ~1–2 μm class (e.g. the 1.064 μm Nd:YAG laser or ~2 μm holmium/thulium lasers) and tunable mid-IR generation across roughly 3–20 μm, covering the 3–5 μm and 8–12 μm atmospheric bands. Evaluated at these conditions, the criteria are: (i) a large non-resonant phase-matchable effective nonlinear coefficient (), characterized on single crystals, with type-I and/or type-II phase matching demonstrated over the mid-IR generation range; (ii) birefringence sufficient for phase matching over that range without prohibitive spatial walk-off; (iii) wide infrared transparency extending from the near-IR pump wavelengths across the ~3–20 μm generation range, with long-wave cutoff and absorption comparable to the benchmarks and low absorption coefficients at both pump and generated wavelengths; (iv) a high laser-induced damage threshold exceeding the chalcopyrite benchmarks, where the answer fixes one stated measurement protocol — pump wavelength, pulse width, and repetition rate — and reports the candidate and the AgGaS2, AgGaSe2, and ZnGeP2 benchmarks as LIDT values measured under that same protocol, so that the comparison is like-for-like despite the protocol dependence of LIDT, with negligible resonant/two-photon absorption at those pump wavelengths; and (v) practical growability (e.g. congruent melting, or a viable flux/solution route, i.e. growth from a molten solvent) into large, optically high-quality single crystals. The single coherent objective is a material that is simultaneously good on every axis: the answer must designate one specific candidate material and cover all five criteria (i)–(v) for one and the same bulk single crystal. Such an answer is accepted if the five criteria are either measured on that one bulk single crystal, or predicted quantitatively for it — provided that a prediction-only answer also specifies a concrete synthesis, bulk-growth, and characterization route for that same crystal. A candidate meeting only a subset, or one whose full property set rests on prediction without such a route, or on polycrystalline powder data without bulk single-crystal values, does not answer the question — this is precisely the gap left by the existing partial solutions.
